DH smokes and of course he doesn't smoke around the children. Unless he gives up smoking before our trip (I can hope), do we need to book a smoking room even if he just smokes on the balcony? He will NOT be smoking in the room, but only on the balcony. Would they allow smoking on the balcony of a nonsmoking room?

We are planning on staying at the Contemporary, if we do need to get a smoking room, do you know where they are located?

Mary

Hi Mary,

My DH smokes as well and we have never requested a smoking room as he never smokes in the house. He goes out on the balcony and makes sure theres no one around for him to offend.

Puts them out in a can of water and it works fine for him (and the rest of us too)!

I know this can be a hot topic, so be prepared. ;)

Anyway, as long as he is extra considerate it wouldn't bother me.

That said, we had a horrible time with the people in the room next to us during out last stay at the WL. We were in a non-smoking room, and so were the people next door. However, they sat our on their balcony and smoked constantly! There were three or four of them and they were always smoking out there. It was awful. We couldn't sit out on our balcony and enjoy it at all because it stunk so bad. The balconies are close together at the WL and they were literally just a few feet from us. It made us pretty miserable, because we like to sit out on our balcony in the evenings, but we couldn't. A real bummer.

We request a non-smoking room, in a non-smoking building because both of our kids have asthma. I have, on two occasions, called the front desk and asked them to send someone to ask smokers on an adjacent (actually just below and to the side) deck and on the stairwell sitting area to please not smoke. Both times, it was done, so I assume a non-smoking building encompasses the entire building, not just the rooms. I know your husbands are complying with the rules and being sensitive to those who use non-smoking rooms, but the smoke does find its way to adjacent rooms through the patio doors. Thanks for understanding.

I agree, the OP was being very considerate in asking.

The problem with him "being considerate is that when he is out on the balcony smoking, it very likely will prevent people from going out onto their balconys from adjacent rooms. So even if they aren't out there when he starts, it doesn't mean that they wouldn't want to be before he finishes.

The smoke can easily creep into others rooms even when the doors are closed. Aditionally, when he reenters the room after just finishing the smoke, the smell and chemicals will still linger on his clothes and end up all over the room.

Please book a smoking room, you can have housekeeping come to "desmoke" it if you need to, but it would be the most considerate thing you could do for everyone around you.

Have a great trip!

Anne

Thank you for being considerate of others and asking the question. I agree with Ducklite and the others. The last time we stayed at the Contemporary, we very rarely could go on the balcony due to cigarette smoke (and other types of smoking for that matter). My oldest has asthma so we also have to be very careful.

Speaking from both sides....

Last trip we had a smoker next to our non-smoking room and I have a son with special needs who gets sick very easy. We have had him in the ER and a Doc to the room during trips to the world. It was a real problem that this gal smoked, they were tiny balconies close together and the entry doors to our rooms were in an alcove that smelled as well.

Well, I have since started smoking again (my nerves are shot, sorry excuse I know) and will be checking out the appropriate places to do so while on our trip.

Maybe you could be on the watch out for slamming doors, the smell of lysol, or just plain ask if you see someone out there if it's ok.

We had the same problem there. At a Holiday Inn or somewhere else it probably wouldn't be an issue, but at WDW we pay a premium for the location and view from our balcony.::yes::

I always book a smoking optional room. I wouldn't dream of smoking on the balcony of a non-smoking room.

OP asked about the Contemporary but didn't I read somewhere that at AKL you cannot smoke on the balconies?

The animals probably hate it as much as we non-smokers do. (MIL is a smoker and really considerate - if someone didn't tell her not to smoke on the balcony, she'd probably think it was okay).

(with all the great smilies, there are no "sick" ones and no "stinky" ones):headache: :faint:

No smoking on AKL balconies. I have heard mixed things about pool view and standard view balconies. So, I did not smoke on my pool view balcony. Definetly, NO SMOKING on any balcony that faces the savannah. There are cameras that see all.

We have been at BC when we ended up having to be forced to leave our balcony because of a smoker below us on several occasions one trip. There are drains in the floor of the balcony and the smoke came right up through the drain. My son was really having a hard time breathing and had to stay in the room. We even tried to block the drain, but it didn't help.

I am a smoker and usually request a smoking room. We are going down in Oct this year and I actually called the Contemporary resort (cuz that is where we are staying) in a Tower room and asked them if they had smoking rooms and where they were located. They said yes there were smoking rooms and they are located on Floor 8 for a tower room. SO I was happy with that. I am sure they have smoking sections if you are staying in the wings of the resort I just can't remember where they were located as I was only concerned about my room category. You can call them and ask and they will be able to tell you.

OK, I'm glad I asked. My dh is a considerate smoker. Me being an ex-smoker (I think we're "worse" than never-been-a-smokers), I don't even want to have the smoke near me or the children, so he usually takes off to smoke somewhere discreet away from everyone.

I'm also glad I asked about the Contemporary balconies, because I've never stayed there and I was wondering how it would be with the smoke and the balconies. We will book a smoking room.

But now I'm wondering if we are in a smoking room and dh is out on the balcony smoking, wouldn't his smoke travel up or over to those in nonsmoking rooms anyway????? Dang...I wish he would just quit!

I know at the Polynesian its a smoking "building". I requested that even though I won't smoke in the rooms with my children. I will be smoking on our balcony but I did not want to bother non-smokers with my smoke so I requested a smoking building. Also, the good thing is if you request a smoking room or building as the case may be....its guaranteed that you will get it.

I've stayed many times in the Poy Conc. building over the past few years. Several weeks ago, we requested and were granted a 3rd floor LV room. I am fully aware that half of this floor is smoking optional but the few smokers have never bothered us before.
This visit , things were very different. I swear, the whole floor was smoking. People were smoking on the stair wells as well as every balcony room near us almost constantly. We are not militant nonsmokers and actually don't mind the light smoke smell occasionally but I think this cured me of the Poly concierge for awhile. We only like the third floor because of the view and privacy. The second floor doesn't have balconies and we didn't like the people always walking by our first floor room when we tried that. I'm not sure what's going on but several concierges told us that the demand for smoking rooms is tremendous and that there was a waiting list for them the whole time that we were there. Threehearts

I've been told different from most all the resorts: Smoking is permitted on ANY balcony...it is considered outdoors. This is from the horses mouth!
I am a considerate smoker and always ask for a smoking room but if only non-smoking rooms are available for my view preference i have been put in non-smoking rooms and even given an ashtray for outside smoking upon check-in.
I, like your husband, smoke only outside and away from my children so I know the deliema well.
Also an FYI if you are staying in the garden wings at the Contemporary there are no balconies...only patio's on the first floor...this is in both wings!

Enjoy your trip and you may find as I did that the non-smoking policy in the parks is actually a great thing. No more worring if your bothering someone else while your smoking anywhere...because only smokers hang out in the smoking area's...even ashtrays aplenty...no more(for me atleast) butting out the cigarette and carring it in your pocket until you can find a trash can!

i appreciate all the considerate smokers (and i'm a former smoker also) :)

we did have a problem at pop a few weeks ago... someone was smoking on the walkway outside the room next to us (it was non-smoking) and everytime they opened their door as they finished they would pull smoke into their room and our rooms would stink from the smoke smell circulating thru the air vents... it was rather unpleasant, yet i am sure she was thinking she was being considerate...

so, just because you are not down-wind of the smoke, doesn't mean it won't affect your air...

Unfortunately, this is not true. I always request a smoking permited room and have yet to get one. Not one time. A couple times, at AKL specifically, my confirmation papers said "Guaranteed Smoking Room" and was still assigned to a nonsmoking room.

Jenifer, I believe you are completely correct. I was standing next to a family checking into Poly LV Concierge a little over a year ago and they had requested a smoking room many times over. There were none available. The CM told them that they would send an ashtray to the room and they could smoke until their room could be changed. They were assigned a first floor room which is definitely non-smoking in the Hawaii building. The husband was not happy about putting out the non-smokers on that floor but they did take the room. No other rooms were available in LV or GV in Concierge. I wonder if the smoking rooms are more popular than we think. I was told on my last trip that many Floridians who were displaced from their homes during the hurricane were staying in the Poly and I guess if I smoked, that would be a difficult time to cut back.
