[BIf so many of you are that very serious about smokers, request that DVC build a completly nonsmoking resort. [/B]

I bet if DVC did build a "non-smoking" resort on property(WDW), including non-smoking by the pool, it would sell out the faster than the current DVC resorts did.

I am sure you are right about that, Cindy! I would be reserving there all the time!

As to smoky clothes being brought into the non-smoking unit....YES, they do stink up the place. The residue particles from the smoke is what is in the clothes and what many of us asthma sufferers are bothered by. If a smoker so much as walks past me (not smoking), I will flare and sneeze and cough from the smoke residue. I too believe that a NON SMOKING building should be that way inside and out.

We had the same problem as Peter Johnson on our last trip. My family really enjoys the balcony and we spend a good amount of time out there. The last trip we were even lucky enough to get one of the huge balconies. The kids love to eat their meals out there as well. Last trip we had a smoker below us that also spent a lot of time out there. I acutally think that one was a cigarette smoker and one a cigar smoker. Well there is a drain in the middle of the balcony that drains to the balcony below and that smoke was coming right up through that drain. We did try and cover the drain, but it didn't help, my husband still had a real hard time breathing (he has a lung disorder) and had to stay in the room most of the time and my kids were not doing well either, because they are very senstive to smoke due to asthma.

I really don't know if there is a good answer, the people were not doing any thing wrong because they are allowed to smoke on their balcony, it just made our vacation a bit less enjoyable.

Smoke odor does stay on clothing and is transferred. My work is a nonsmoking building. Smokers must leave the building and go to "smoking" areas. There are designated closets for the smokers to use because the odor of the smoke was being transferred to coats hanging in the same closet and causing problems for some with breathing difficulties.
Enough.
I too applaud the OP and hope she finds a satisfactory solution for all her guests.

I appreciate the original question. Out of consideration for non-smokers, if a room is non-smoking so should the balcony. The last time I was at OKW and looked off my balcony, I saw that the grounds outside below the balcony was used as an ashtray.

The smell lingers and stays and it does ruin ones time. I am not asmatic but smoking instantly irritates me and causes an almost immediate sore throat.

My question to the original poster is, If you are vacationing with smokers and have no problems being in and around them, why not request a smoking room and than limit your guest to smoke on the balcony.

This is the most common sense suggestion I have heard so far!! Great idea.

Just ask for a bldg. that you can smoke on the balcony!!

Our recent trip the people above me smoke (yes,I know smoke rises) and i was able to smell it below!!

If a bldg. is designated Non Smoking then it should be Non Smoking. Rules are Rules......

Maybe you can call a few days ahead and inquire as to how you can handle this.............I wouldn't want to see Grandma smoking on the balcony of a NS bldg and some irate neighbor calls the front desk (that could make for a bad vacation).

Good luck.............

Smoking is allowed on the balconies of non smoking buildings.
Unfortunate, but true. I agree rules are rules and Disney has ruled it is ok. The irate neighbor can call, and after the call they will most probably still be irate.

Why would you bet that? You going to buy all the points? ;)

Personally, I would vote for a non smoking DVC, then all this would stop.....maybe.

Since there are so many smokers you must be in a constant state of "flaring, sneezing and coughing". I don't envy you.

Yes, it is very difficult, but we do live in a state where non-smoking is quite prevalant. According to statistics I read recently, less than 20% of Minnesotans are smokers.

On nearly every trip our balcony time has been limited due to the smoke from a DVC neighbor. There are times when I expect to be exposed to second hand smoke but it always takes me by surprise when I wander out of my Villa, coffee in hand and take in the beautiful view only to gag on someone elses bad habit.

It is the smoker's vacation also.

Can't wait for DVC to go non-smoking completely and all these arguments will cease........right Gail.;)

I have tried to keep out of this but here goes.

I am sick and tired of all the non smokers belly aching about this and that.
I am just waiting for the day when the make it illegal to smoke outdoors period (maybe they will let you smoke in you r own house with the windows closed).

To keep on topic it would not be rude to smoke on the balcony.
It is perfectly within their rights.
I do feel it would be rude for someone to ask someone else to extinguish their cig.

I have spent over $20,000 for my DVC vacations and my favorite activity is enjoying a Cigar every night on the balcony. We always get a non smoking room as my wife is asthmatic and also cannot stand the smell of "cigarette smoke". My Cigars do not infiltrate the room (my wife would not stand for it). And contrary to public belief the smell does not linger on the patio furniture , wood railings or any other outdoor fixture , to assume it does is quite ridiculus, If my wife can sit on the balcony with me and not be bothered I find it quite improbable that a balcony to the side or above could be affected. Smoke smell on clothes also does not magically permeate into walls and carpets.

I guess if you all get your way I will have to sell my DVC and do something else with the huge return I will get .

As I suggested earlier, any discussion of the merits/conerns about smoking is welcome on the Debate Board- only on the Debate Board. It is NOT a DVC topic.

Since that suggestion has been ignored numerous times and the topic posed by the original poster has been addressed to her satisfaction, further smoking responses will have to be made on the Debate Board.

Enjoy!
