I know in the Parks there are certain areas for smoking but am not sure about the resorts. I stayed @ Pop in Oct. and will be staying at Pop again but didn't pay any attention to people smoking as I don't smoke. Now I am going with a group of 11. 2 of the people smoke. However they won't be smoking in the rooms because the rest of us don't smoke. So can they stand outside and smoke or do they have to go to a certain area to smoke?

I had to laugh as I read your post. Just reminded me of high school, where the smokers gathered across the street from school at lunch and smoked to their hearts content(actually to their hearts discontent, I imagine).

I'm a smoker, but I am also very conscious of non-smokers and try my best not to infringe on their rights. I don't know where you're staying, but if it is a hotel with a balcony, I would say that they should NOT smoke on the balcony. Smoke drifts very easily and the people on the balconies surrounding yours could be very offended by the second-hand smoke. In fact, I have been told by CMs that smoking is definitely not permitted on savannah view balconies, even if you are in a smoking permissible room, and at WL, if you have a non-smoking room, you are not permitted to smoke on the balcony. In resorts like CBR or POR, etc., there are smoking buildings and they usually have courtyards with ashtrays for their guests.

All that being said, if you are not in a smoking building, I would advise your friends to do what I would do - walk to a quiet area where there are no guests, and puff away. If someone comes along, the only polite thing to do is to put your smoke out or move to a different location. Sometimes I think non-smokers get so irritated because there are a lot of smokers who are not considerate of others. Smokers have every right to smoke in an area where it is not prohibited, but a little consideration, such as not standing on common walkways near non-smoking rooms while puffing away, would go a long way toward more tolerance.

Sorry I didn't make myself clear. I am staying at Pop again. So there isn't the balcony issue to consider. All doors lead directly outside.

Pooh, I know what you mean about considerate smokers. One of the smokers in our group is my husband. I must say to his credit he tries very hard to be considerate to others. When going out to dinner or for an evening of dancing for example he always excuses himself and goes to an area of smokers or outside. I just didn't want to put him in an awkward position in case there was a area for smokers only.

If I were staying in a designated non-smoking room (at Pop the entire BUILDING would be non-smoking) and someone was right outside smoking, I'd be calling the front desk and asking them to send security to put an end to it. The smoke seeps into the room from the ventilation unit and minute cracks around the door. It also would be a health hazard for me (an asthmatic) to open the door and walk into a cloud of smoke.

It's great that they want to be considerate--have them go to an area not near anyone's doors or where other people have congregated. Perhaps an isolated area near the pools would be a good place. Have a gret trip!

This is such a touchy issue, but wanted to add our experience at the POP last December. We were in a non-smoking wing - every day and evening guests would stand at the railing smoking. We could not stand outside to watch Illuminations because they were standing at the end (our room was the end room), smoking and watching. Each morning we had to walk past them smoking. Although no one should have to be subject to smoke when they are in a non-smoking area, it is even worse for those with medical issues. Also, folks who want to smoke should be able to do so without having others complain, which means not in a non-smoking area! ;)

We did not call the front desk, but if it happens again I will. We'd already had a housekeeping problem with the room - for which they sent the manager up to take care of the issue - and did not want to be labeled a complainer.

We tried to kindly remind the smokers that it was a non-smoking area and we would like to watch the fireworks as well, but they were so angry that it actually scared my friend.

I feel it is the responsibility of Disney to make it crystal clear if smoking is not allowed in an area. A guest should not have to have to ask another guest to refrain from smoking. Although I've read many posts about smokers on balconies of non-smoking rooms etc, this was our first such experience in 25 yrs of WDW resort stays.

It was awful when folks used to smoke in line! Such a closed in area - no way to get out of the way of the smoke.

Thanks so much to all the considerate smokers!

What about pool areas? Do the pools at the resorts allow smoking? hmmm, maybe I should ask this on a FAQ resort specific, my mom smokes, and she's coming with, I know AKL has strict policies, but I think most resorts allow smoking at the pools, and there are chairs there...

Whenever I've sat at a table by the pool area at POP there were smokers. I just tried to get a table opposite the drift of the wind:flower: There is also smoking at the outdoor tables near the food court.:sunny:

Hope this helps!

Yes, they do allow smoking at the pools. However, it causes great grief for asthmatics. DS has severe asthma. We appreciate that the parks are non-smoking, but we have so much trouble at the pool, walkways, and waiting for buses. Our biggest problem recently was in line for the boat from MK to TTC. We were packed in line like sardines and someone lit up. There was no where to go. Lots of people complained to this person, but the person kept puffing away.

POOH1219---Thank you for your consideration of others!!!!!

That's just flat out ignorant. If I was in that situation and it caused an asthma attack, I'd have them arrested for assault. That's just flat out ignorant.

I wish that WDW would have a designated smoking area at the pools as well. Just because it's outside doesn't mean the smoke is any less noxious, hazardous, or offensive.

Since I am the original poster asking the question I asked so as not to bother anyone. I know all too well about walking through others smoke and asthma as myself and one of my dgs5 has asthma who is also going with us. This is why we are staying in a non-smoking room.

I was hoping there was an area that I could send the 2 smokers in our group so as to not bother anyone else. They know better than to stand by the building and smoke where people are walking and coming in and out of there rooms.

The reason you can't smoke on balconies at AKL is because of the animals, possibly the chances of starting a fire by flicking the lit cigarette, or an animal eating a thrown away cigarette. Mar 13-16 we were at WL and you can smoke on the balcony. Just get up in the morning and see all the people doing it. We even found an ashtray on our balcony. In the past we have found them on the balconies at Poly and CR too.

I'm sure if they went to the parking lot area by the building that would be far enough away.

As far as I know there are not real designated places for smokers at the resorts. I did see ashtrays at some areas around some of the deluxe resorts but that is about it.
It is a shame that it is not more spelled out so that people on both sides of the issue were not always wondering and asking.
I think people just have to use their best judgement.

We always go to the parking lot to smoke if we are not in our smoking room. I try not to smoke while walking around a resort because you never know if a little one will run by you and get burned by my bad habit not to mention the smoke. I won't smoke near the pool areas thats just asking for trouble. Even as a smoker I hate people who lite up in non smoking areas. They are all around the parks and easy to find. I think some of the smoking areas are the peaceful and out of the way spots that are very nice (if you smoke). Have a great trip.

I agree completely. I even have a favorite smoking spot because it's so pretty and peaceful there.

FYI, Shades of Green is a completely non smoking resort; at least in the rooms.

I never thought about the parking lot area. Since we won't have a car, it didn't occur to me. Thanks for the idea!
