Smoking in the Bathroom

im a smoker and i would not "sneek" a smoke unless it was in the designated areas. would love to quit but its harder than you think....

i am aware of people around me and would never want to make someone elses trip unpleasant. especially kids.

Disney website says there is a $500 recovery fee if your caught smoking in your room OR balcony!!! enforce it DISNEY!!!! people that disobey the rules dont care about anyone but themselves.....

That's it! They need to enforce their rules. A poster on an earlier thread re: smoking said that many hotels have sensitive smoke detectors that WILL detect when someone lights up a cigarette. Why doesn't Disney have these?

And it does not matter one bit that it was midnight. You are supposedly guaranteed a non-smoking room at Disney, and they should darned tootin be able to get you one, I don't care what time it is! If the resort you are at is full, they should upgrade you to one that is not.

Maybe it will take a lawsuit from someone who has a full-blown asthma attack and ends up hospitalized before they take this seriously.

We complained about people smoking inside/outside of their rooms at the Pop last June. The front desk said they would look into. I doubt they did. The person at the desk told us that they would be issued warnings first before they would think about enforcing the right to fine. Granted the new rule was not in place that long; but still was not comforting to know that they didn't plan to enforce their new policy. Doesn't sound like it's improved any.

All I can suggest is keep complaining and keep track of the people you talk to. Hopefully someone will come to their senses and realize how dangerous this can be. Good luck, OP. Keep us posted.

So sorry you had to experience that! I thought all Disney resorts did not allow smoking. It upsets me when people chose to break the rules and other people suffer. And I'm shocked that the manager would not send someone to your room immediately.

Maybe Disney should just open the smoking buildings back up. I know a PP said something about a FL law that prohibits smoking inside buildings, but I think it might solve a few problems.

My DMom would be one of those people smoking in the rooms. Her smoking really doesn't bother me. (I guess since I grew up with it. I didn't realize that I smelled like an ashtray all through school.) It drives DH nuts! She is one of those people that smoke 2 feet from the hospital doors. She feels it is her God given right to smoke. What about smokers rights? is what she says all the time. I just let it go. The best part is when my DD and DS hold their nose and and wave their hands and tell their Mammaw not to blow smoke in their face!!

whats really sad is for the smokers is they have areas everywhere designated for smoking resorts and parks. If your that D@#* lazy to use them as i do, then you should be ticketed,fined,1st warning, etc.........

i do feel that it should be stated verbally at check-in and not assumed that everyone reads signs,flyers,web,etc.... all the web resort maps are now showing the designated areas...........


wish me luck im going to go this June with the intent to not smoke the whole vacation!!!!!

I was going to mention that at the BC this summer I was staying at a full balcony room and each morning when I would wake up there would be cig ashes all over from someone above smoking and flicking down on my balcony. I was terrified that I would be charged the smoking fee so I called to tell the desk and they were HATEFUL! Practicly accusing me of smoking and blaming it on someone else. I was furious - I have never touched a cigarette in my life. So I feel the original posters pain, I asked if they would please have house keeping clean the balcony as I like to eat my breakfast there and it was not done (or the person upstairs kept doing it). So I called again and I finally get really mad about them accusing me of smoking...

That's funny you mention that because my DF didn't want me to call because he was afraid they would think it was us smoking!

Well an update....nothing happened. They came the next day and gave us all new linens and sprayed the curtains. It was our full cleaning day anyway! It happened again last night around 10 and I at least got a phone call from a manager. She said she would look into it with engineering to see which room would be connected to ours as far as ventilation is concerned. I doubt they did. But....if it happens again you can bet I will put up a big stink (no pun intended)!

There is no reason why my room should smell of smoke when it is on the second floor on the back of the building....the smoking area is on the front first floor!

To the poster who asked if I expected them to knock on every door...at midnight no....but if it happens a third time....yes. I'm paying to be here too! Enforce the rules that you have in place!

Yikes! I would be livid and demanding a room change... both my daughters have asthma and the last thing I'd want on a vacation is to have them suffer a full blown asthma attack!!!

This reminds me of our stay last summer at POP. We were on the fourth floor facing the parking lot of the tramp building, and it was very late one night and my DS did not want to come down with me, so I told him lock the door and do not open it for anyone. He's 12. So I step outside our door and got sidetracked watching something or someone, can't remember, but while I was standing there, not thinking, I lit up my cigarette and took a drag. Then I realized OMG I can't smoke this here, so how to put it out?? Ha ha, I was really worried, and finally just squeezed off the end and squished it with my foot. Then went downstairs to smoke the rest of it at the designated spot.

Reminds me of the time, I took out my cigarette to get ready on the way outside and still lit it while I was in the building.

That said, I did see A LOT of people smoking on the balconies, and housekeeping saw them and did not say anything to them. I for one, was really freaked out when I realized I had lit up, and put it out immediately.

I have now quit for 7 days, except for the drag I snuck last night. Does that count?

We're just back from SSR and BWV. I was surprised that at check-in (at either resort) we were not reminded of the non-smoking policy - room & balcony - and not told where the designated areas were. I had told them that this was our first time at either resort so that should have reminded them to discuss this with us. Neither of us are smokers so it not occur to me to be an issue until we got into our room at BWV. Our neighbour two doors down walked out to the balcony and lit up a smelly cigar while I was sitting there. He had his morning cigarette while I was outside having my coffee the next morning. We called maintenance the next day over a different issue so when the manager arrived to check it out I told her about the neighbour and asked her to knock on his door and remind him of the policy. She said absolutely! I'll give him the benefit of the doubt regarding whether or not he knew he couldn't smoke on the balcony - we hadn't been told at check-in so maybe he wasn't told either. We didn't have another issue the rest of the week so the gentle reminder did the trick!

that for me deodorizing the room is as bad as the cigarette smoke. Spraying the deodorizer would probably cause an attack if the smoke didn't.

Often times I've had really great service at hotels and other times people practically roll their eyes like I'm making up the asthma/allergies.

At work once the cleaning came threw and deodorized with some orange spray. It caused severe attack, I could not think well enough to do anything but gasp. My co-worker grabbed my fast acting inhaler and helped me. Having allergic asthma is not fun.

If Disney knew someone was smoking in the bathroom then I hope they fined them. I'm guessing they would not light up in the bathroom again.

I guess SSR has the same design defect that POP has. Hotel bathroom vents are usually combined. At POP, it's up to 16 rooms. But, the airflow is supposed to be one way. If it's not working properly, Disney should at least allow the fans to be on 24/7. I'll take noise over smoke any day.

First off I don't smoke never had never will(grew up with father who smoked 2 packs a day) thats how I understand a smoker must smoke but also must obey the rules.You want to smoke go right ahead but do it in the designated areas.I agree with "spiceycat" if I smelled smoke I would call 911 and have the fire dept solve the issue.Then the resort will fine the SOB who was smoking......This is like a problem we had on christmas walking up main street in MK after the electric light parade and I had my 2 yr old on my shoulder and a couple walking in front of us were smoking and the smoke was going right into my DD face.With it being packed with people I had no choice to move out of the way but to confront the couple.I can't repeat the words spoken back to me but my wife had to remind me it was Dec.25 she said not today of all days let it go.I did....but never again.....these kinds of people need to know we aren't going to take this anymore.

Congrats on quitting! I'm an ex-smoker. It's not easy to quit--don't beat yourself up if you snuck a drag. Everybody at work is doing really well with Chantix, by the way!

I'm sure the housekeepers are not getting any direction from Disney re: smokers. Why should minimum wage workers put themselves at the risk of verbal abuse to enforce a policy that Disney obviously does not care to enforce? I wonder if Disney would reprimand them for saying anything to smokers!

There are MANY things Disney could do to enforce their smoking policies.

1. Remind people at check-in that there is no smoking in any rooms or walkways, and point out smoking areas on the map.

2. Take action (instead of trying to weasel out of their responsibilities) when other guests complain about smoking in non-designated areas.

3. Reward housekeepers for discovering smokers. Iread about a hotel that gives the housekeepers $10 for sniffing out smelly rooms, then fines the client $200.

4. Enforce their policy of fining people for smoking in rooms. I would bet they haven't fined a single person yet.

5. Place sensitive smoke detectors in hotel rooms that would detect smoking. Then ENFORCE the no-smoking policies. ( I know an office building I used to work in had such sensitive smoke detectors that you couldn't so much as light birthday candles.)

Google nonsmoking hotels and fines, and you'll get an eyeful. According the the msnbc nashville affiliate, MOST hotels across the country are fining people for smoking in non-smoking rooms:

Because the rooms are non-smoking, and it takes a special cleaning to get the smell out. Which is time consuming and costs more than a normal cleaning. You break the no smoking rule, you pay.

Wow, this worries me now. DDIL and I have Ashma and DS is extremely allergic to tobacco smoke and we plan a trip next year.

Comfort Inn's recently went smoke free and when you register you are required to sign a form stating that you know it is smoke free and that a $500 cleaning fee will be charge to your credit card if you smoke in your room (including bathroom).

I agree that anyone having a medical emergency because Disney does not inforce it's rules should immediately file a law suit.

I would need a new room immediately, even in the middle of the night. Also - room de-odorizer would make it worse, not better, if you have asthma.

It's not "outlandish". It's the rules and the law in FL. You don't have to agree or like it, but it's the rules and the law. It's supposed to make us a more civilized society when people follow the rules.....
