Smoking in Restaurants. Your preference?

Would you rather eat in a restaurant that is smoking AND non-smoking or just a smoking restaurant.

Do you think that a totally non-smoking restaurant would thrive as well as a both smoking and non-smoking restaurant?

Any stories?

Well they seem to be thriving in New Jersey, New York, California, and Florida, just to name a few states.

I would much prefer to eat at a non smoking restaurant. I was thrilled when NH finally banned smoking in all restaurants. Doesn't seem to be hurting business here!

i can't eat in restaurants where ppl are allowed to smoke, due to a severe cigarette smoke allergy, so i choose totally non-smoking restaurants. they thrive in my NE alabama hometown too.

Well they seem to be thriving in New Jersey, New York, California, and Florida, just to name a few states.

And Ct. The restaurants are still packed and they are packed with non smokers....as are the bars, lounges, etc. We went to dinner at Foxwood's Casino during the summer and I had forgotten that it is a NOXIOUS environment. While the restaurants were smoke free, you needed a gas mask to get to them. We will not be going back.

Business here thrives and we haven't allowed any smoking in restaurants and bars in years. You can't smoke in many outdoor areas too, like the park and the beach. It's great.

I don't really care one way or the other. I'm just not bothered by the smell of smoke at all, and I don't really notice it one way or the other.

I will say, though, living in a state where it is still up to the business owner, that few completely non-smoking restaurants seem to do well, especially if they're places that also sere alcohol. I'm sure they do fine in places where there is no competition from restaurants that allow smoking, but around here, I can't think of more than a couple restaurants that have gone completely non-smoking and didn't change back.

Our city went no-smoking in all restaurants several years ago. I love it! Doesn't appear to have hurt business. ETA: Tourism is our biggest business.

At first I thought this must be a really old thread. But I see that it's not.

We don't go to restaurants unless there's no smoking allowed. And the restaurants we do go to seem to be thriving.

I ate at an "all smoking" restaurant the other day. I didn't realize such places still existed. When I got home I had to leave all my clothes outside. The neighbors thought I was insane.

Totally non-smoking for me. While I think that inflicting a slow death on yourself is your choice, don't try and kill me, too. NH is doing great with it's smoking ban in restaurants. I live in an area of NH totally dependent on tourism and we've actually been thriving.

We're doing well in Ohio as well. Before the state went non-smoking, we'd seek out cities that were non-smoking to eat as well.

There is no such thing IMO as a non-smoking section at a restaurant. No matter where I sat in a non-smoking section I could smell the smoke.

In WI they are trying to get all public places, including resturants non-smoking. The Tavern League is blocking the bill pretty good. The made a statement that if you don't like the smoke in their establishment, go somewhere else. So I go somewhere else.

NY smokers made a big stink (excuse the pun) when smoking was semi-banned then fully banned. But in actuality, after the fact, all the people who are slowly killing themselves just smoke outside the restaurant entrance and litter the curb with their butts. If their addiction is so bad, they adjust. What are they going to do, not eat? It's a ridiculous non-sequitur actually.

Most smokers don't smoke while eating anyways. They can certainly stand outdoors for a few minutes to smoke & litter. What they don't have, is the right to take down others sitting next to them while they are killing themselves.

Being a New Yorker, sometimes when I travel I forget that other states still allow smoking in restaurants and it's really unpleasant trying to eat with smokers anywhere near the dining tables. It affects the smell and taste of your food and your clothes. DH and I will end up leaving without having coffee, dessert and an after dinner drink in a smoking restaurant so they definitely lose money on us if it allows smoking. (PS - I was a 2-pack a day smoker before I quit!)

My mother, brother and both children have asthma. My family wouldn't be able to go in a restaurant that allowed smoking. Also, since no one in our family smokes (except StepFIL who smokes outside away from others), DH and I are very sensitive to smoke and have difficulty even standing next to someone who smokes heavily (like in a line). So, we wouldn't dine in a smoking environment.

Luckily, I haven't seen a smoking section in a restaurant in long time.
