Smoking at Disney

As someone who hasn't smoked a cigarette in almost 2 years (smoked 2 packs a day for 16 years before that) thanks to vaporizers, I wish they'd be more accommodating to vaporizer users. In MK specifically, I wish there'd be 2 or 3 smoking sections, and at least double the amount of areas where vaping is permitted. I shouldn't have to go into a crowd of smokers just because what I do looks like smoke. I understand not being able to user the vaporizer in public areas, since some people won't like it just because it has a visual effect, but the more Disney removes smoking/vaping sections, the more people are going to do it in public.

It has nothing to do with the fact that vaping "looks" like smoke. Some factors:

1) Most vapes have some scent that is possibly offensive to others.
2) No one knows what the long term health effects of vaping are. The studies have not been done, and vaping in general has not been around nearly long enough for trends to show up. For all we know, vaping is as bad or worse for you than tobacco smoke.
3) Many vapers I've encountered have no compunction about blowing their vapors in people's hair, faces, etc, especially in crowded environments because to them, there is no danger. I don't even want people blowing their breath on me, let alone their vapor.

I love people that say they are allergic to 'smoke'. There is no such thing. A person can have a sensitivity to smoke but not an allergy. If you have a sensitivity to smoke them camp fires, cook-out, even high temperature indoor cooking can be irritants.

PS... I'm not a smokers but I do have a daughter with lots of allergies. Yes, smoke can be an iratant.

I have had two specialists tell us that our daughter is indeed allergic, her throat swells and she cannot breath, she does not go to her grandmothers house, camp fires and has to be very careful. We recently stayed in a hotel that had a smoking floor, it resulted in an er trip. No she does not have asthma.

Where I'm from it's illegal to smoke or use a Vapor thing just about everywhere. I was always suprised that smoking was allowed at so many places at WDW. Only a matter of time before its completely illegal anywhere in public.
It really depends on the state laws too. I will also saw that you have people coming from everywhere to WDW. People from other countries don't have smoking laws. Walt Disney himself was a smoker.

1) I agree. Not that they're offensive to me, but offensive to others, since there are people that don't like to have their nose senses violated. My personal mixture has zero odor.
2) Vegetable glycerin and polypropylene glycol get metabolized by the body when inhaling the vapors, the same way it does when you eat it, which most people do on a daily basis since those ingredients are in tons of processed foods. As an ex-smoker, I feel 1,000 times better than I did when I smoked.
3) Yep, there are offensive people that don't take the comfort of others into consideration. When standing in line for a ride, others will also breathe on you, cough on you, rub up against you, talk loudly the whole time, fart on you, and emit body odors in your presence. This isn't a behavior that is exclusive to people that inhale and exhale vegetable glycerin.

So, I agree with most of what you said, but my stance is still the same. There should be designated vaping sections in the parks that don't cause people to get upset.

This. I understand people abuse the term "allergic" sometimes but it's listed on my medical history. I have a really bad reaction to any kind of smoke, not just cigarette. It won't kill me, but tree pollen won't kill anyone either and tree pollen is a legit recognized allergy.

Im from Saskatchewan, Canada and smoking is all but illegal here.

Walt Disney died in the 1960's. Smoking was not only socially acceptable in those days, it was consider the cool thing to do. That isn't the case anymore. Here in Sask you are pretty much an outcast with no rights if you smoke. I just find it to be a ridiculous thing to do and don't appreciate getting a whiff up my nose. But, you are right, there are many different cultures from all over that come to WDW.

Actually? I would not be surprised. All of the following is personal opinion....

From about 2011 to present, the number of designated Smoking Locations within the MK have been reduced from 7 to 2. Currently, the only two remaining locations are at the fringes of the MK. The current situation is radically different from the other parks.

SEVERAL of the eliminated smoking locations make complete sense, due to non smoking crowd proximity. The one by Cinderella's Castle was a classic: really BAD location.

However - my personal belief is one of inclusion, when inclusion works, and can be used to avoid increased disobedience. The MK needs a close to center of park designated smoking location. And I believe there are TWO perfect locations for this:

Just inside the NORTH and SOUTH Main Street bypass entrances.

Both locations are generally unused during daylight hours. They are removed from the general public. They sit idle most of the time. BOTH are very close to former designated smoking locations. They are removed, available, and would work well.

I will point out that human nature, being what it is? It's only a matter of time when ANY group of people, ostracized, begin to engage in disobedience. This is NEVER a good outcome for either the afflicted, or innocent parties. Far better to create a controlled situation than an uncontrolled situation..... Far BETTER to include EVERYONE, increase income and Park attendance, at virtually ZERO cost.

Yes, the situation DOES concern me personally. My tendency is to never go to a place where I have been told I’m not wanted. Again, all personal opinion. I believe in the rights of ALL people, which includes ME not bringing perceived harm to others. However - I will not roll over and die :).
I'm a smoker and I agree that the one by the castle should never have been put there. Even when we smoked there, other smokers said they couldn't understand why that area was picked. Glad they got rid of it. One I don't understand that was eliminated was the one beside Space Mountain. It was isolated and if one didn't smoke, there was no reason to have to walk through it. Seemed like an ideal spot to me.

Actually lots of tests have been completed. Although a complete analysis has not been completed and will take many years, the truth so far is no single test has shown ANY harm from vaping, either as primary or secondary.

I don't see how they can claim second hand smoke is harmful either unless they have studied large groups of people who, other than being exposed to second hand smoke, have lived in s bubble.

A fun personal story to add to the health argument:
My mom smoked when pregnant with me. Ate whatever she wanted, drank whatever she wanted (not alcohol), no special meds or vitamins or exercise. I was born healthy and happy, placed in GT classes early, graduated top of my class, continue to be successful today----even being surrounded by 2nd hand smoke my entire life.

My aunt (moms sis) followed all the Docs rules with first born, no smoking, don't eat this or that, take these vitamins etc. he was born tiny, had ear and eye problems all his life, still has eye problems today. Intellectually he is on par with me and younger brother--top of his class and successful now.

With 2nd born aunt did her own thing like mom. 2nd born was healthy and never had health problems, not even a broken bone. Now tallest and most muscled in whole family. Also top of his class and successful.

None of us 3 smoke, just not interested. Still frequently around 2nd hand smoke and doing well.

just wondering if anyone has heard about Magic Kingdom becoming smoke free as of 2018. I'm in the ark now and that's the rumor. I don't know if it will be just MK, all parks or if this is just a rumor.
Doesn't sound the least bit creditable. If they were going to make the park smoke free (its remarkable so already), they wouldn't wait two years. They also wouldn't just limit that to the MK and not the other parks.

I am in no way against smoking. A lot of my family are smokers and have been most of their lives. That being said to tie a lot of what I have read in this posting a lot of people are allergic to smoke; and some people do not like it. Smoking is actually on the decline and a lot of people are turning against it. IMO if Disney did get rid of smoking, to make way for a new ride, you would gain more people than you would lose them. I don't see smoking areas as a thing Disney plans to axe, but if a new ride comes in to the works near a smoking area you can kiss those areas goodbye.

I didnt know there were still places you could smoke in Disney?

It is not just a visual effect. I am very happy for those that have stepped it down from smoking cigarettes to vape. But per the National Institute of Health there are toxic chemicals involved and right now just not enough information to determine the safety of the smoke. They are regulated by the Federal Govt as a tobacco product and drug delivery device .... and Disney, like many other companies, will treat them the same.

Yes you can find the locations here:
