Smoking areas?

You know, I am amazed I didn't think of this question before, but now that I read Barb's comments about a drunk Gloria Gaynor wanna be in the "smoking section at Wavebands" :teeth:, I'm wondering - can someone explain to me the smoking policy on board?

Is smoking allowed in the cabins, at dinner, or only in bars and predesignated areas?

I'm so used to "NO SMOKING ALLOWED" here in my hometown and most of the towns around us, I didn't even think of this concern. DD is severely asthmatic, and it would make a difference for us in where we can go or not...like taking her dancing at night. :(

I'm thinking that there's no smoking in the staterooms or they'd ask if we wanted a smoking or non, right??

No smoking in the cabins, however, it is allowed on the verandahs. You will often find smokers booking verandahs for the ability to step outside and smoke. Our one verandah trip did not have smokers nearby, but some have said heavy smoking neighbors can limit your verandah use.

Most of the bars allow smoking (I think promenade lounge is non-smoking, but not sure). Most outside areas also allow smoking. I believe there is no smoking at the Mickey pool (little kids pool with the slide).

I'm sure you'll get more specific responses, but unless you are very allergic to smoke, or have a heavy smoker next to your verandah, you will likely be able to avoid smoke in most places except the bars. We visited the bars occasionally, and they were smoky, but the entertainment was worth the smoke exposure to us.

You're awesome Lisa, you've got all my answers today.

We're not THAT sensitive, but if smoking was allowed in the cabins, there would be a problem if we weren't, because it really never gets OUT of a room when someone smokes in it.

The thought of the possibility of having heavy smokers next to me if i had a veranda makes me glad we saved the $$ this time around....

The restaurants are all non-smoking, right?

I can tell you that on last week's 7 day, I saw very few smokers in comparison to the number of guests, always on the open decks 9 & 10. And with the wind that wips around up there, it was quickly dissipated (i.e. I never smelled it, and you could dimply walk away a bit if you did). I didn't visit any of the adult areas at night so can't comment on that. Smelled cigarette smoke only once while I was on our verandah.

DCL was recently rated as the most friendly cruise line to non-smokers. There is no smoking in any cabin (although people do it!), no smoking in the dining rooms.

Basically, smoking is allowed in the nightclub area (at least after 9 pm) and on the open decks 9 and 10. That's all! Isn't it great? I wish they'd outlaw it in the nightclubs too, but......

If I had a magic wand that I could wave to make one change on DCL, it would be to make the clubs non-smoking during shows and activities. There are non-smoking sections in Wavebands/Rockin Bar D, but a large part of the non-smoking section is directly in front of smoking, with nothing to divide them, so if you sit there you will be sitting right in front of smokers. The ventilation is bad in there, and I am allergic, so I can only tolerate it for an hour or so. People sit through the stage shows without smoking for an hour, so why not do the same for the lounges.
But overall, I agree that Disney does a great job of meeting the needs of both smokers and non-smokers. There are smoking areas and also plenty of places to avoid smoke. In our 35 cruises, over half have been with verandahs and I think we've only had chain smokers next door two or three times where it has bothered me. Other than that, no problems. In comparison, on RCCL's Sovereign of the Seas, where smoking is allowed in lots of interior areas, I spent half the trip gasping for breath through a totally clogged up nose and suffering from a sinus headache that turned into an infection.

I also believe it is allowed outside on Deck 4.
