Smok'em if ya Got'em

please no flames but...

let me start off by saying that i am not a smoker but i usually travel with one or two.

they always use the DSAs but sometimes they are hard to find. it would be nice if they were easier to find & if more of them had benches & shade. it is amazing to me how many were in the sun or had nowhere to sit for a break.

the main thing that annoys me is the non-smokers who will sit in these areas and then be rude to the smokers who are following the rules. all the spots are marked with ashtray-topped garbage cans saying SMOKING ALLOWED IN THIS AREA ONLY (or something like that). if you don't want to be around it, move on a little ways to a non-smoking area (i do this when i travel alone).

also, i want to comment on the walking around with lit cigs. i was actually burned on my arm in adventureland in 1987 when i was 12 years old. the guy kept walking and never looked back even though i know he heard me scream. i don't think people should walk around in any crowded place (wdw or otherwise) with lit cigs. it's dangerous.

*Official Memo from the desk of Micheal Eisner*

Effective immediately there will be no smoking of any kind in entire area of WDW. All smoking must be done outside the maingate in the special designated area that we have just built for the comfort of our guests who smoke. No smoking is to done in the parks or resorts and guests who violate this new rule will be imprisoned. We have spared no expense and had a concrete patio poured and outfitted with brightly colored benches and ashtrays. The new area is now called Eeyore's Enchanted Emphysema Village and is now open for your enjoyment.

When you feel the need to smoke just find one of our CM's to direct you to our new shuttle bus for smokers, that by the way is sponsered by Phillip Morris. You will then be driven to outside of the WDW compound where you can smoke in peace and quiet without the evil glare of the anti smoking brigade, just make sure you get your hand stamped for re-entry. We have devised a plan that we feel is fair to everyone. Thank you for your time and please visit us again. Have a Disney Day and remember a frown is a smile turned upside down.

Thank you.

Cute, but I can guarantee you it STILL would not satisfy the anti-smoking group.. :flower:

:guilty: :confused3 Amazing!

Actually the misting fans would work the same way - just don't turn the fan part on.. ;)

:rotfl2: DH said the same thing:)

I saw Tweedle Dum tell a smoker to move or put it out (he gestured since they don't speak) it was actually quite funny to see the look on the guys face!

Non-smoker here who is allergic to smoke and prefers to have it far far away!

However, I recognize that MOST smokers are considerate enough to smoke in designated areas and are not setting out to be an annoyance to me at all as a non-smoker. The problem is that all get the negative label brought on by the few that abuse it...

It is the same with doggie pooper-scooping...I always scoop but it is the few dog owners who don't that make dog owners look bad and we get the glares from unhappy people in our local parks, like we are all guilty of the same 'crime'. We are all so quick to point fingers and make judgements!

It wasn't that long ago that smoking was an everyday part of life. You smoked in restaurants, office buildings, banks, planes, buses, trains, literally everywhere. It wasn't frowned upon or unexpected, it was just there.

This is so true! I've worked in the same hospital on and off for over 25 years, and both staff and patients used to be able to smoke in the hospital! In fact, the smoking lounge on the pediatric floor (where I worked in the mid 1980s) was DIRECTLY across from the reverse isolation room where kids with cancer and low blood counts stayed. We nurses would get so many complaints from parents, and all we could say was "Complain to hospital administration."

Yup, people smoked in hospitals, grocery stores, etc., etc.

Hard to believe that people could basically smoke ANYWHERE 20 years ago. I'm an ex-smoker, and I will say I was a RUDE smoker (quit over 20 years ago). I was young, brash, and didn't care what people thought. Plus smoking was more socially acceptable, so public opinion seemed to be more on the side of freedom-to-smoke. As a health care worker and an ex-smoker, I'm ADAMANTLY anti-smoking now.

But I suspect most of the rude smokers breaking the rules at WDW are from other countries, where smoking is more accepted. There do seem to be an awful lot of rude smokers at WDW--DH and I have been very surprised at the amount of smoke we have to inhale at the parks.

That reminds me of what Tommy Boy said about guarantee's. :flower:

But I suspect most smokers (rude and otherwise) are 6 feet under.

Who would actually do that?!?! It blows my mind that people could be so rude and blatantly disrespectful of the rules.

Boohissboo to that guy. :headache:

It is most likely the kind of guy who would put his cigarette out in the mashed potatoes or cofee cup in a restaurant...

I'm sure this person is like this thru life, not just in WDW and on the Buzz ride...just a boorish pig.

would you still come to WDW if they banned smoking altogether and allowed smoking only outside the parks and in special designated areas of the resorts.

this is not intended to raise the blood pressure levels of the smokers i am just curious too see how many would stay away that is if anyone would stay away.

it seems that more and more places in public are becoming smoke-free zones.

Considering the large number of "rebel" smokers that have been reported here (the ones who don't follow the rules) I would say they would have to hire several hundred additional CM's - and then work them to death.. LOL

Or will there be "pat downs" at the gates to insure that guests don't have any cigarettes on them?

I am not a smoker, but my other (lesser? ;) ) half is. I know that we would NOT be going on any Disney vacations together if they banned smoking.

I don't really see smoking being banned. I think I read that nearly 1/4 of the US adult population smokes. It's even higher in many other countries. I doubt Disney would be willing to absorb that blow to their bottom line.

But I would like to say something about the DSAs:

We were there in February 2005. We are two adults of above-average intelligence, and we had trouble finding many of the DSAs. In fact, there were a few that we NEVER found. I'd like to point out that if Disney makes the DSA's hard to find, you are going to have more smokers that don't use them. Marking them a better with a strip or a light, etc. might encourage more people to use them. I wish people would not smoke (especially my partner!)...BUT...if they are expected to use a DSA, Disney should make it easy to find.

My partner is a very respectful smoker and would rather use a smoking area when inside or when in a crowded place. However, there were a few times when he got exasperated and smoked outside of a DSA. He did make sure he was far from any other people (easy to do in Feb, since the parks are a ghost-town), and he properly disposed of his cigarette. :)

As much as I LOVE WDW, with DH and myself smokers', I'd have to say that we would not return there if they became completly smoke-free in the parks.

I'm a smoker and I always smoke in the dsa! Hey it's the rules..I have no problem with it! But why is it nobody ever complains about the way some people SMELL!!! Ever been standing in line behind someone that doesnt really get the concept of hygiene? Thats offensive to me...But stenching to high hell is perfectly acceptable??? Think about it....These people are swimming in the pools with you...Why is it nobody enforces the "Please shower before entering pool" rule? Would I be within my rights to shoot them with a water pistol full of warm soapy water? Yeah Yeah I get the whole cultural difference thing...But I'm pretty sure every language has a word for Stink. How can these people not smell themselves,if I can smell em from 5 feet away? And besides...Some of these weren't foreign...They were Americans! And I'm pretty sure soap is sold all over our great country.

So to the stinky people (and you know who you are) Please...before ya complain about the smell of smoke...take a whiff of yourself..that should cover the smell of it. :rotfl2:

Oh dear..... You might want to take cover some place safe! :teeth:

I'm by no means saying that anyone that complains about the smell of smoke is a "stinky person" (and yes there are "stinky people" that smoke as well) I'm talking about our hygiene challenged friends that DO complain about the smell of smoke. I have no recourse having been "offended" (read nauseated) by their odiferous bouquet. I have nobody to complain to (or rather anyone that could do anything) if someone that smells like a dumpster gets in the pool without showering. I /We have to tolerate being sickened by slobs that are every bit as offensive as smokers. I'm not worried about the stinky complainers coming after me...I'll just light a cigar, get out a hose and some soap..that will make em run.

I'm not trying to start a fight..I'm simply saying I've read post after post complaining about linecutters and smokers and people with strollers crippling other people with them, brazilians, pop warner,cheerleaders...But I have never seen anyone post anything about "stinky people" in the parks! I can't be the only one that finds this offensive?

Sorry. False alarm. Could have sworn you'd get flamed. BTW, I agree with the "clean smell is good smell"! :goodvibes
