I was reading another post and it made me wonder if anyone has any suggestions about how to destink sandals. My one son has a pair of expensive sandals that still fit from last year and they are nicely broken in the only problem is they smell horrid especially after his feet get hot. I have tried soaking them in ammonia and vinegar overnight to kill the bacteria that have taken up residence but it didn't help much. I would love to know if anyone has any other ideas.. would save a little money if they could be made useable and we wouldn"t have to avoid him by midafternoon to breathe. Thanks.

Have you tried Fabreze spray? That stuff usually takes smells out. It might take a few applications though!

Sometimes sunshine works well. Leave them in direct sunshine, for a day or sometimes for a couple of days.
I don't remember where I bought it, but I have something called Odor Terminator, the label says "kills shoe odor on contact" and is a 2 oz spray bottle. I think I bought it in the shoe dept (maybe at Walmart or Kmart but not sure).
We had the same problem with my son one vacation. We actually ended up buying new shoes and bagging the old ones because no one wanted to be near him!!!

OHIO VIKING....................

What are the sandals made out of??

I have often found it difficult to get 'bad odours' out if they have that absorbent (sp) fabric lining in them.

The sandals are Bass with a leather upper and the spongey rubber soles. it seems to be the spongey part that smells the worst so it may be a lost cause. I have even looked for the same style because these sandals were perfect for the stinky boy ... he is the same one that is harder to fit and gets blisters easily. He has narrow feet and a high arch so shoes have to be big enough but his foot tends to slide inside. It could just be a little early to find a wide variety in stores, in a couple of weeks we may have more luck but if we could get his old ones useable I would worry less about him developing problems. Thanks for any ideas.

Another way to get rid of odors is to use activated charcoal (what is used for aquariums). I would put the shoes in a plastic bag, throw the charcoal on top and seal the bag. Leave it as long as you possibly can, till the stink is gone.
This worked on my refrigerator in my garage (he he, without the bag though!). When we moved, someone spilled in it and I didn't find it till later. I tried every thing people suggested but nothing removed the smell until I tried the charcoal. I had to leave it for quite awhile.
Good luck!!!

Put them in a zip lock back and place them in the freezer over
night. It works!!!!

Tip;This may sound weird but,buy some spray anti-perspirant/deodorant and spray feet and sandals before wearing.Works great! Use this trick on new sandals also before they start to smell. Good Luck!

Contact bass. They are a major shoe company and I'm sure they would like happy customers.
It may be a polypropaline product that reacts when heated up (contact with hot feet).
Sometimes companys will replace or refund when a product is defective, which I think this is the case.
It, also, wouldent hurt to explain your sons foot and that this is why you buy THEIR shoes. My kids are hard on winter coats.....sking..sheding...snowmobiling, so I buy Columbia only for their warrenty.
Hope this helps

Get some spray/powder meant for athletes foot like Tinactin and spray them. DH had a Doctor tell him this and it works to kill whatever is causing the "stink".

I am wearing some Bass sandals right now that are men's sized. I got them dirt cheap cause I am a woman and wear a small man's size. Anyway, they are my favorite sandals and STINK! I wonder if we got the same ones?

These are slip on with leather uppers and spongy soles.

I am gonna have to try some of these suggestions.

This is too funny... I read the other post about smelly sandals but didn't have time to respond though I wanted to. A few weeks have passed and I started looking for the post again today but couldn't find it. Now this one popped up so I will just post it here. I used to be a river guide and wore sandals all the time... Chaco's on the river and Birkenstocks off the river. I hated the way my sandals smelled and so some of the other guides taught me a few things... Some have been mentioned some haven't. I will list them in the order of which I have found to work the best:

1. Put your sandals in a plastic bag with Bounce Dryer sheets. One on each sandal... leave it over night and the odor is gone.

2. Leaving them in the sun (the only down side is that the sun makes leather and rubber, especially if you have 5.10 rubber, age and get tough)

3. Spray deodorant... I find that it doesn't last as long as the above methods.

4. I have tried the charcoal and the freezer. The charcoal kind of worked and the freezer worked for a very short time.

Some newer sandals like Teva, have some antibacterial coating on them now. Maybe try Teva's next time. (yep, my old Teva's pre-bacterial coating reek as well, but i love em)

Have to vote for sunshine and bounce. I have stinky feet, I confess. I use Bounce sheets and spread them around in my closet so I can breathe when I go in to find my clothes! If things get really bad, I put them outside in the sunshine. I am not opposed to spraying my shoes down with Lysol Fabric Refresher (kills germs) or Febreeze either.

You might want to try a pet odor remover product. I use Nature's Miracle for pet & people odors around the house. It's worth a try !
