Some of you may have read my thread yesterday re: vegetarian dog food. I'd found an interesting article written by a University of Florida veterinarian, in which he recommended a particular dog food as being the next best thing to home-cooked meals for dogs; the dog food happened to be vegetarian.

My rescue dog has been very smelly (even immediately after a bath) and very itchy. I had read on some of the DISboard dog food threads that premium dog foods can help with skin conditions and certain horrendously abnormal dog smells :lmao: (not just the normal doggy odor;) ).

Well, I've fed my dog the new dog food twice and her awful smell is GONE! I'm amazed it happened so fast! I can't tell yet whether her itchiness is gone, but I've read this can take 6-8 weeks to resolve, so I'll see how that goes. Just wanted to share the news that the food REALLY WORKED for her smell!

What's the food?

Our dog is more 'odiferous' than should be normal. Just plain old wet dog smell that starts to build a day or so after a bath. We can live with it, but would try a food change as an experiment.

I'd like to know the name of the dog food too!

It is the vegetarian dry food by Nature's Recipe. I bought it yesterday at PetCo after googling availability. I read about it in this article:
http://neuro.vetmed.ufl.edu/neuro/AltMed/Alt_Med_Neuro.htm

The author is not addressing "smelly dog syndrome" ;) ; he is writing about general recommendations for keeping dogs healthy. However, somebody on the DISboards mentioned that her vet recommended a premium dog food to decrease her dog's smell, and I decided to try this particular one since it is recommended by the vet as being the closest to a home-cooked meal for a dog, AND because my dog seems to have allergy issues (scratches a lot, skin is dry, and was very smelly even after a good bath).

The article is from 1997 and the name of the vegetarian Nature's Recipe food is now Nature's Recipe Healthy Skin Canine Formula.

I'll be very interested to see if the food takes care of her itching/dry skin problems as well (so far she seems to be scratching a lot less but it's SO soon--she literally has only had two Nature's Recipe meals so far--that I can't believe it could be working this fast). Starting April 15th (when she's due for heartworm preventatvie), I will also start giving her Sentinel, the combo heartworm/flea preventative that worked so well for my past dogs.

BTW, my dog LOVES her new food. It was pricy ($24.00 for 20 pounds) but well worth it if it helps with her skin and smell issues!

I have found a great cure for smelly dog-and believe me mine had all of yours beat in that department!!! It was recommended to me by the lady that did his nails at Petsmart. I give him one container of yogurt a day...whatever is on sale-fruit flavors-he loves it-scarfs it right up...ad best of all his hair is gorgeous now and no more smelly dog!!!!! It appears it was a "yeast" problem.
