So I am watching a friends dog and now my carpet smells. What is the best cleaner to use? The dog came five days ago and will be here 10 more days.

Is the dog dirty or soiling the carpet? Dogs should not smell. We have 4 and they are indoor and out and no smells. Nature's miracle works well if they are soiled. If it is just a stinky dog smell a rug doctor to clean the carpet or any sprinkle type deodorizer to make it smell better ..and wash the dog.

Part of the problem is that we removed our deck in the back yard this spring and she loves to roll around in the dirt. The last time we cared for her (a year ago) it took us a long time to get the smell out of the carpet and that's even after steam cleaning:confused3

I bet your house probably smells like dog to someone who doesn't have four of them ;).

OP, you are a saint for bringing a dog into your home twice and letting it smell up your carpet . I wish I knew how to help you get the smell out, besides the usual steam cleaning

Are you sure it is not peeing on the carpet? Or up against your furniture? I have 3 dogs and my house does not smell.

You could try sprinkling some baking soda and vacuuming it up.
Hopefully the dog is not peeing on your carpet.

On the carpet thing - shampoo the carpet after the dog leaves.

You can also mix up a batch of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. (1/4 cup baking soda to a quart of hydrogen peroxide. I buy the peroxide at Sam's or the Dollar Store.) Check the dog for cuts and then put this on the dog's fur. Do not put the solution near any cuts or near the dog's sensitive areas (his/her bottom, mouth, eyes, nose) as it stings like the dickens when it comes into contact with broken skin/mucusy skin. Rinse the dog off thoroughly. The dog will not smell.

Or you could drop the dog off at the groomers for a bath, with strict orders that the dog not smell when you pick him/her up. This is my preference. :)

I agree- my friend has a cat and says "you would never know we had a cat"- ummmm sorry but yes people DO know LOL- you are just so used to the smell you don't smell it. But of course I say "nope, I don't smell anything" just like everyone else they ask tells them! Dogs smell, when they are wet they smell worse- when you own the dog you just get immune to the smell but someone walking in your house that is not used to it would certainly know you had one dog, never mind four LOL.

My mother-in-law has 1 dog and her whole house smells like wet dog. Even my husband, who is used to dogs can smell it.

As for getting the smell out, try Nature's Miracle if you can find spots where the smells are coming from.

Nature's Miracle is wonderful. I'd give the dog a bath or take it to a groomer. If the dog is coming in and out all day and is smelly the carpets are going to smell.
