Small kids in connecting rooms--parents, how do you work it?

I am wondering how parents work connecting rooms while their kids are little. Do you sleep the kids in one room, and prop the connecting door open? Or sleep one parent and one kid in each room? Or use one room for everyone to sleep in, and the other to sit in while the kids are settling to sleep?

Just curious how other families work this out...our kids are only 5 and 7, if that helps.

I am asking because I don't know if we should keep our suite at SOG, or instead opt for connecting rooms. (Logic being, in the suite, there is one king bed, the rest are pullouts--with two connecting rooms, there would be 4 queen beds, two bathrooms, and it would be cheaper than the suite).

We had connecting rooms at Pop last December. It was my DH and I and our 3 kids who then were 9, 7, and 4. We had one room with 2 beds and one room with a king. We slept in the King and they had the room with the 2 beds. We kept the door between wide open and they were instructed NOT to go out the front door of their room or unlock it at all. It worked just fine and was nice to have the 2 rooms. Once they fell asleep we could stay up watching tv or reading.

Is it just 4 people for your SOG stay (2 adults, 2 kids)? If so, a regular SOG room with 2 queen beds should be more than enough room, if your kids don't mind sharing a bed (even if not, I believe at one point some SOG rooms had sleeper sofas, but I'm not sure if they still do).

If there are more than 4 people, I think connecting rooms should work. During the day you can keep an eye on the kids if they are in the other room and at night they should be fine with the connnecting door open. You'll be right there incase they need you, and you'll be able to step to the door to check on them if you want to.

it is VACATION who wants to sleep in the same room as their kids?

At other non disney hotels we have gotten connecting rooms. We may leave the door open a little until the kids pass out.

We typically have a 1 bedroom DVC so our kids are in the living room area and us in the bedroom, pretty much like at home. I can see concern maybe for a kid under 5, but don't most kids by that age know to stay in their bedrooms and sleep

The kids go to sleep on the early side...I like to put them to bed at 8 or 9pm and then have a separate area where I can relax with my husband! Hence the suite at SOG...which doesn't really work if there is a king bed in the bedroom, then either my husband and I would have to sleep in the living area on a pullout, or else we'd have to put them in the king bed and then move them when we were ready to go to bed.

My dad might come with us as well; so we'll either be 2 adults, 2 kids, or 3 adults, 2 kids.

My boys are teenagers and a connecting room is a must!!! I do keep their door open until my DH and I want privacy. They have their own bathroom, shower and tv and can do what they want so DH and I can have privacy. If I want to go to bed early then I can and the boys can go to sleep when they want to. I wouldn't be able to have it any other way.

When we went in 2005 we had connecting rooms. Our girls were 10, 7,5 & 2. The 2 yr old slept in our room. The older girls slept in connecting room with the door open. It worked out great! I love having 2 rooms and the girls loved having their "own" room, too!

When we have connecting rooms, the kids (9 & almost 6 now, but we've done this for years) sleep in one room and we sleep in the other. We lock the door to the kids' room and use the space as though it were a suite. We prop the connecting door on the kids' side fully open with a chair or suitcase, and leave the connecting door on our side open just a little bit except when we want privacy.

We have some of the kids sleep in the connecting room and we still end up with two in our room. We keep the doors open at all times and use our room as the main exit and entrance and keep the deadbolt on in the kids room. We put something in front of the interior doors so the little one's can't "accidentally" close the door. It's great to have the two bathrooms and sinks. One is the kids and one is the adults.

The past two years we have stayed at POP with two connecting rooms. The first time our kids were 3,2,2. It worked great. We had a room with 1 king and another room with two doubles. We were able to put them to sleep and then stay up and watch tv or read. We had two bathrooms (which really wasn't a necessity since two were still in diapers). But we could use one shower to store the strollers when we were in the room.
I would recommend it.
One thing to consider is that I heard Disney will only guarantee connecting rooms if there are more children than adults.
