Considering a small direct (50-75 points) add on at CCV. We have a membership with an AUG UY that is titled with myself, DH and both DDs. DH and I have another membership with a DEC UY. If we want to add on with an AUG UY, would it have to be titled the same as our AUG membership? I’m thinking that if its titled with just DH and I then it would be considered a new membership and would require the 150 point minimum purchase. If that‘s the case, I guess I will just need to be patient until our resale VGF with AUG UY closes. Unfortunately, that means I will likely miss out on 2020 UY points.

Different UY is a different membership so you can title it any way you want. Different titling on the same UY means a different membership. But you have to transfer those points to use them with your other points at seven months out. A small number of CCV points might not get you much at all since studios go really quickly.

The plan is to bank and book 1BR in alternating years or possibly use for a split stay. We stayed in one in 2019 and they are way too cramped for us. Personally, I wouldn’t put in the effort to stalk/walk to try and get a studio with the limited availability. If studios were the goal, I would be looking for a guaranteed week and 118 points at a minimum.

But would it still be considered an add-on if a new membership had to be created?

When we recently did our small direct add-on for AKL, we were informed if we wanted a different use year, it would be considered a new membership and would fall under the guidelines for minimum purchases. We opted just to do the 56 points I wanted under the current UY than have to buy a bucket of points that we don't really need.

No.

It's either an add-on to your current membership or a new membership.

A new membership can be more complicated to combine with your current membership.

What is the implications if you buy a new contract (in my case resale) with a different use year? I own Poly direct with Sept UY and have some offers for spring UY think it will be easier for planning purposes.

They will not allow you to get a new membership for less than 150, even though you own points already.

So, it has to be all 4 owners that are currently on your Aug UY to be an add on and be eligible for buying less than 150.
Thanks for the confirmation. I have a resale with AUG UY about to close with just DH and I on title, so I will try and be patient since a new membership (our 3rd) will need to be created. Our kids think we’ve gone DVC CRAZY and we don’t really want to share all our points with them anyways.😀

It’s a new membership so you are like two different owners. You can’t use the points for one reservation without a transfer

Transferring points has rules that can play a role in which points can be transferred. For example, you can’t transfer points banked already.

We have two but use each for different trips and very rarely use for the same one. If we do, I book some nights on one and some on the other.

Unless you have a good reason, keeping one is ideal.

It will definitely be harder for planning purposes, although there can be benefits if you intend to use the points completely separately.

Prior to the 50% borrowing limitation, if I owned 2 contracts with the same UY, I could bank and borrow pts to use up to 3 years worth of points for one stay. The points would be pooled together and I could book that stay as if I had only 1 contract. Easy.

With 2 memberships (2 UYs), you can transfer current pts from 1 UY and bank them and then transfer current UY pts during the period of the stay to use 2 years of your other contract fairly easily. But you cannot borrow transferred pts at all so that will make things more complicated.

To combine points from both memberships, you either have to transfer points and usually call MS to use the transferred points (until IT completely fixes that glitch), or you can also book some nights from one membership and the rest from the other. Then you have to contact MS to link the nights so that you don't need to change rooms during your stay.

Technically, transfers between memberships are one per use year per membership, but MS has been known to waive that rule if the memberships are owned by the same person(s). But they could switch to enforcing the one-transfer rule also...
