Small contract different use year

I am thinking of buying a small contract, but the pickings are slim for our use year. How does it work if our second contract is a different use year? Do I have to have the points transferred before I make a reservation?

We have 180 points at SSR-August use year. My preference is to buy 50 points at SSR with an August use year but if none become available might consider buying a contract with a different use year.

After taking our last trip and knowing we are going again next year we plan to start going every odd year after that. We plan to go for 9 nights and book a 2 bedroom so I believe on average 460 points will work. Most likely we will rotate among all the unrestricted resorts for the next 5 or 6 trips at least. If points become a problem we will also book one of the 3 1 bedroom 2bath resorts as a point saver. I just want to understand what issues I face with a second use year.

I'm in the same predicament, same resort lol. I have been trying to research pros/cons of different UY and if I need to keep them close to the same if I can't get what I want in the same. And then....if same UY can I combine if different resorts........

Contracts with different UYs will be under different memberships. In order to combine the points, you would have to call member services every time. They would then transfer the points from A to B. Transfer rules still apply. You can bank transferred points but you cannot borrow them. Transferred points retain their UY (including their banking deadline). You cannot transfer banked or borrowed points from A to B. The only exception to the transfer rules is that member services will typically not count it as your once per year transfer in or out.

If your plan is to use your points together from 2 contracts, it will be easier and less confusing to keep them in the same UY.

There are a number of people on the board who are a wealth of knowledge and will give us a very nice education.

So worth paying a premium and waiting as long as you can until the right contract becomes available.

We are back to one UY. I thought, as a DVC veteran (1996) I could handle not only multiple resorts, but multiple UY's as well. What a PIA! We are back at one resort, one UY and one expiration date. It seems that it will be easy but I found the UY to be the problem. Multiple resorts, one UY is not such a big deal, especially at 7 months.

I would try to be patient for a bit rather than years of trying to get it to work.

Good luck!

I could see buying another UY if that contract had enough points to be used on its own when doubled. Say you needed 200 points for the length of stay, if you could buy a 100 point contract and use it every other year then that would open up a possibility. I would not relish keeping track of multiple UYs otherwise, though I'm sure many here do it routinely.

I have two, Feb and June. The vast majority of my contracts are in my June Use Year, and only BLT is in Feb, but it works for me.

AKL yes but BLT will probably only have lake availability so that would not be much of a savings (or cost more) and while we are still waiting on Poly I can't imagine them being cheaper than BLT.

For Example 3/14/25-3/23/25 (9 Nights)

1 Bed
AKL - STD = 300
AKL - SAV = 354
BLT - STD = 356
BLT - LAKE = 402

2 Bed
AKL - STD = 392
SSR - STD = 393
OKW = 406

With your strategy you can certainly do the two bedrooms with the 460 points every other year. If you do stay at a more expensive property the next year I would still try and make one of the two bedrooms work even if that means buying OTUP as that way you can certainly spread out.

We can wait. I will really not need it until 2027 and even then, I can book a 2 bedroom for 9 days with 360 points if necessary.

Only real issue is since I decided I want the points I would just like to get it out of the way.

I had two contracts with different use years and it was a PITB. You can not combine the two contracts in a single reservation without transferring points from one to the other. When I would book a vacation with both contracts, I ended up having to book two reservations with whole days with one contract and whole days with the other contract.

Yes, I have thought of using OTUP as needed. The real monkey wrench will be if we go to Aulani once. We also travel in August, so I believe the points needed are less than March.

I was figuring the year before any Aulani trip we would only go to WDW for 4 or 5 days and then to Universal for the balance of days needed to make 9 so that we save points.

I think more SSR 50 pointers will come your way in your use year. I was looking for a 50 point BLT in my use year and gave up and bought AKV in my use year instead. They were too infrequently available. I have heard from others that multiple use years are no fun so I heeded that as a warning.

I am also considering some of the other resorts. Even the 2042 list. I think after 2042 we might not need the second contract.

Hang in there for what you want. It is nearing end of year and those pesky MF's do cause many members to list their contracts. I am positive you will get exactly what you want...I can feel it LOL!

:tink:

For what you want to do with the add on, I’d wait to find your current UY. We have 3 UY but the all have a particular purpose. I wouldn’t want to be transferring for each trip. Maybe even consider a larger contract as you want to rotate among the O14, most of those are more points.
