Seems there are a lot of posters of say they bought a small resale contract, perhaps 50 points, at a second DVC resort. What are the advantages of doing so? Don't you still have to have the full amount of required points at the resort at which you're staying to take advantage of the 11-month window?

Yes, only the points associated with that particular resort can be used to book it prior to the opening of the 7th month window.

However, by using banking and borrowing, some members use those small contracts to stay at the second resort every other year (or every third year). For example, many members have purchased small contracts for BWV & BCV just to use during the Food & Wine Festival. Those stays usually need to be booked during the home resort priority period to get in, especially if you want a studio.

We have a 25 BWV contract. That's good for a weekend trip to Food & Wine every year, or five weekdays every-other year, or a full seven days every third year.

This is what I'm planning to do too. Buy a larger SSR contract for mostly 1BR stays at various resorts in spring or summer, and 1-2 dedicated smaller contracts for every 2-3 year trips during F/W or Marathon in studios using bank/borrowing.

We have 200 points at SSR which we use for that resort with family, Vero, or weekend stays at other DVC resorts.

We also have 50 points at AKV. We bank those points and stay a week there every other year.

I have two large contracts and some small. In the past, I was always able to get whatever reservation I wanted with whatever points I had in the 7 month window. Not too much the case anymore....at least in the past two years. So if we want to go back to WDW we need to rethink the strategy similar to what others have done here. Right now we're just using it all in Vero Beach and Hilton Head.

This may or may not be a small contract(depends on who you are and what each considers small) that we purchased resale for sole purpose of being able to stay at BWV(150 pts)every other Oct. for F&W fest, to be able to book at 11 mos. In comparison to owning 485 at VWL, I consider the BWV contract small. That we feel was our advantage, but we really enjoy F&W fest, so that was our main reason, being able to book at 11 mos.

I only share all this to do a comparable to our situation. We own this BWV for a specific purpose.

50 pts say at OKW, value season, will get you a studio for ex., a stay this year from Dec. 4-9. So it can be done every year, or save the 50 for a longer stay the next year. Its all relative to what you want and need.

So to answer your other question(finally :-)), to book at 11 mos, the pts need to be from the same resort, same use yr. IMO, it would be risky to try and book at 11mos then use other its from other resort to extend the stay at 1st resort booked

That depends on the resort and the time of year. But if you don't mind a split stay, you could make sure you spend two nights at BCV for the pool - because while you LOVE the pool, a contract large enough to stay at BCV every year would be a financial stretch and chances are OK in the first three quarters of the year that you could extend that at seven months. And if not, you move.

To book at 11 months, you only need to have points from the resort you want to book. They do not have to be from the same use year. (It may be a little more complicated to book using two memberships (which you would have if the use years were different), but it could still be done.
