Small Children on Surrey bikes?

Is there a spot for small children on the Surrey bikes where they can be safely strapped in? BTW, I'm talking safe for a 16 month old with Houdini-like tendencies. Do they provide helmets? We're staying at VWL and hoping to rent a Surrey to go over to Fort Wilderness petting zoo. Anyone know how far that would be?
Thanks!

Some, if not all of them, have seats in the front of them, sort of like a basket on the front of the bike.

I don't remember seeing helmets, but you could always call and ask about them and how child proof the seats are.

I've seen the basket seats on the front of the surrey bikes. I don't know how well it would hold a child that age--I'd check it out before you rent. I don't think the helmet would help much--I don't think the surrey could fall over and if the child fell out the fall would be pretty far.

The distance from VWL to FW on the paved trail is at least a mile. You could also take the launch to FW and then the walk to the Petting Zoo is very short.

Just FYI - you could also take the boat from Wilderness Lodge to Fort Wilderness.

While we were at the Boardwalk my children DS 10 and Ds 8 desperately wanted to ride these bikes but were not tall enough. I can't remember exactly how tall you had to be, maybe 58 inches, but my kiddos were not even close. They are both typical height for thier ages.

I wonder if you little one would be allowed to ride?

Just a heads up.

I don't know about if they have a minimum age or height/weight type restriction for babies in the childseat but....my 2yr old (at the time) was able to ride on the surrey bike in the front basket and someone there renting at the same time as us had a 10yr old or so who was also required to ride in the front basket part due to not being tall enough. Needless to say the 10 yr old was not happy

So while you do need to be tall enough to be aloud to sit and pedal, if you are not tall enough you can still ride but must ride in the front child seat.

On our last trip DS was 17 months. We rented at the WL, rode to FW. He rode in the front with DD, 5. They both had helmets. No problem.

Last trip to the Boardwalk, there was a family riding and there was the cutest little boy who couldn't have been more then 11 months old riding in front. He was enjoying every minute of it! No helmet though :-(
