Small add on now or wait for a larger contract

I have been thinking about adding on for a while now. Ideally I would like to add another 100-150 points. I don't have the money yet to do one purchase of 150 points.

Would I be better off adding on 50 now and then in another year or so buy the rest? The smaller point contracts have such a premium through resale I am not sure if waiting will increase my total price even if prices continue to rise. Prices are rising so much, either direct or resale, that it makes me want to lock in at least a small contract at the current pricing.

If it were me I would wait to do the 150 when you have the money. You will only pay closing once (so savings there) and depending on resort, if there is a "deal" going on it is usually at the 150 mark.

150 points or more will be less expensive, but IMO you have two choices: wait or buy small contract

I've recently bought 25 point OKW contracts for $100 and 50 point SSR for $110. You have to be really aggressive in stalking the resale websites and pounce immediately. It's not worth going into debt to buy more than you can afford, however life is for living and if you have enough to buy a small contract I say go for it! Good luck!

Follow up question.... I have 150 SSR points that are grandfathered into a blue card. If I added 50 points resales is cheaper than direct obviously but will I regret not being able to use all my points at RIV and future resorts? We stayed at RIV in February and loved it but not sure how easy it will be to book there going forward.

Personally, I think if you loved staying in Riviera, you will regret not being able to use some of your points there in the future.
As far as booking, that’s an unknown of course, especially since resale Riviera can only book there.
So, my decision may be different than yours. I added on direct in December, so I could use the point everywhere there is availability.

I would agree with this as well. We currently have 500 pts at SSR so I am hoping we never want / need to add on, but if we find a resort in the future that we would 100% want to be able to book from time to time then I imagine we would add on direct to that resort with the same use year we have now. It just simplifies things.

I can tell you I regret the decision. I bought restricted BLT this summer and it’s been frustrating when I found an extra night at RIV to change to for my trip and could not use what points I had left because they were BLT. Yes, I could have borrowed but did not want to do that As it would be less to use next year.

I should have spent the extra and just bought them direct, even if it meant only 75 via 100.

We love love love RIV and it will always be part of my trip as a split stay.

Why not bank or borrow points your grandfathered points for the RIV stays? You can also buy 24 one use points for $19 each.

That way, you get extra points resale saving $$ and still get to stay at RIV. Good luck!

Personally had bought smaller BWV contracts and then sold them and purchase our RIV contracts.

As long as you are picky you likely can insulate yourself against losses of selling in 2-3 years time. Even better get a different use year and when you go to sell you can transfer the points out and strip the contracts of points.

Closing costs are a much larger expense per point in a small contract, and the pricing is so much higher, sometimes crazy high. I wouldn't personally buy a 50 because of the expense.

Another $600 closing or so would make a $12/point difference on another 50 point contract.

If buying only 50 points I would probably buy direct now and add on another 50 in a couple years
