I'm thinking of getting a digital SLR; I've a film SLR, but to be totally honest I don't really know how to use. I want to get a book at explains the basics about photography (for example, what is f-stop?, what does 38-114 mm lense mean?, etc.).

Does anyone have any books that they'd suggest?

Understanding Exposure: 2nd edition by Bryan Peterson

Add me to the list of recommending Understand Exposure. Great book. Bryan does a great job with explaining everything and has wonderful examples. I refer to it regularly.

i like understanding exposure as well but i also have an old book photography for idiots . my copy( pre digital age) is pretty worthless for dslr except for basics like shutter, aperture etc but was good for slr...it's probably revised by now for digital . it was put out by a photography magazine and has pretty much everything in it. the author's name was/is Mike Stensvold

This is a great book - he also has another one out that is related just to digital. It is called Understanding Digital Photography.

I have both books and they are VERY similar. You won't go wrong with either one.

I didn't know about Understanding Digital Photography. I'll have to pick that one up

I've been toying with moving from my pretty good point & shoot to a DSLR and after reading the comments here, went to check out the reviews of Understanding Digital Photography on Amazon. There was one very detailed one that stopped me from buying the book and a couple more the backed it up. I may go with a non-digital version of the book to avoid the problems.

I am looking at expanding my horizons and learning to use more of the manual settings on my Point and Shoot in anticipation of getting a DSLR this year. I am currently reading Digital Photography For Dummies, 5th Edition by Julie Adair King. It covers the basics in the context of digitial cameras as well as exposure and f-stops. It also covers some basics on how to pick a digital camera and on editing photos. I took this out from the library, and look upon it as the first of many books I'll need to read to learn the basics. It's an easy read, and a good starting point.
