SLR camera bag recommendation

My husband has a Nikon D90 and has a really big lens 18-300? I am looking for a bag that he can carry that isn't too heavy or bulky to take in the parks with him. He has a lowerpro backpack that in my opinion is huge and heavy. I am looking to see if you all can help me find a reasonably priced bag. Most of the ones I've found have been very pricey. Now I don't mind spending some money on it but if I can find a bag that is cheaper I'd be a much happy camper. He had the lowerpro slingback but it dug in his shoulder.

Just for reference, which Lowepro bag is he using now? Also what size, 100,200 300, etc? Also, are you sure that the lens is an 18-300 and not an 18-200 or 28-300?

If it really is a 'big' lens (as in, camera and lens measure at least a foot long), then a bag I particularly love is the Think Tank Retrospective series. These are 'holster' style bags in which the lens is placed end-down into the bag with the back of the camera pointed up. It makes it very easy to grab the camera and slide out the big lens for shooting. The Retrospective bags are messenger style, with a flipover main flap, and can be worn as shoulder or cross-body bags, or adapter to belt or holster holders too. They have no hard sides - all soft canvas build, so very light and floppy - not made for transporting lenses in cushioned safety, but for comfortable all-day carrying and active shooting with lenses. They come in 1-4 lens holster sizes - so you can get one to just accomodate the camera and lens by itself, or with extra holster pouches to accomodate extra lenses. I have a 2-lens version myself to accomodate two long birding lenses side-by-side, that lets me swap lenses on the fly.

I like my Tamrac Adventure Messenger 4. It's big enough for my long tele zoom when it's mounted on my 50D, though I usually just use it as a lens bag. Crumpler also makes some great bags, for a while I was borrowing my daughters all the the time. But you really can't know which one will fit you without going to the store and trying them out.

Thank you for all the responses. The second lens that DH carries is a 2.8 lens 18-200 I believe. I am not sure the type of backpack he uses now other then it is a lowerpro and it holds a computer. It isn't the 100, 200 or 300, we have looked at those.

Hmm... if it's a 2.8, then I'm guessing it's the 70-200 (or 80-200), which is a big lens. Do you know if his bag is the Lowepro Fastpack?

Have you checked out the Case Logic Camera Backpack? I just got mine yesterday and I'm liking it so far. I also own a DaKine Mission Photo Pack, which I love, but I'm not sure what your budget is and it might be just as big as your husbands Lowepro backpack.
