I personally don't celebrate Hanaukkah, but I know many people that do.

Poll coming!!!!

I don't, but I've been dreideled anyway! :)

Happy Hanukkah!!!

Thanks SLO for being so thoughtful. Yes tonight is the first night of Chanukkah.

Chanukkah, the Jewish festival of rededication, also known as the festival of lights, is an eight day festival beginning on the 25th day of the Jewish month of Kislev. Chanukkah is probably one of the best known Jewish holidays, not because of any great religious significance, but because of its proximity to Christmas. Many non-Jews (and even many assimilated Jews!) think of this holiday as the Jewish Christmas, adopting many of the Christmas customs, such as elaborate gift-giving and decoration. It is bitterly ironic that this holiday, which has its roots in a revolution against assimilation and the suppression of Jewish religion, has become the most assimilated, secular holiday on our calendar.

Chanukkah is not a very important religious holiday. The only religious observance related to the holiday is the lighting of candles. The candles are arranged in a candelabrum called a menorah (or sometimes called a chanukkiah) that holds nine candles: one for each night, plus a shammus (servant) at a different height.

It is traditional to eat fried foods on Chanukkah because of the significance of oil to the holiday.

We celebrate Christmas and Chanukkah. My DH is Jewish and I am Catholic. Our dd only gets presents from Santa. We are going to my inlaws on sunday for dinner and to celebrate with them.

This is a great post, and thank you for taking the time to do this!!! :)

I love hearing and learning about different religions :)

I don't celebrate it, but I want to wish all my DIS friends that do a wonderful 8 days!!

I celebrate Chanukkah with my fiance and his family (they are all Jewish). I'm an atheist, but I was brought up Catholic, so we celebrate Christmas with my family.

No I don't but wish a Happy Chanukkah to those that do.

BTW, is there more than one correct way of spelling it? I seem to see various spellings. Is there one correct, or are there several correct ways?

Yes there are multiple ways of spelling roughly based on the translation from Hebrew to English. :goodvibes

I cannot wait for candle lighting, latkes, and dreidel spinning tonight. My kids cannot wait to unwrap gifts and bankrupt me playing dreidel.

For those who celebrate, who many menorahs do you light? We have 5 now, one for each member of the family. Although on some nights we get lazy and do not light them all.

We don't. But, did when I was a child. My mother is Jewish and my father is Christian. We celebrated both!!! 8 days of presents and then another load of gifts on Christmas!!!

we do just one menorah for the whole family. but a lot of my friends do one for each family member.

First off Happy Chanukkah to all that celebrate. I do not celebrate Chanukkah but I do know many that do. I also look forward to every year the family that celebrates Chanukkah every year erecting menorah. They have a blow up menorah that they put up in their yard every year and light one candle each night. I cannot wait to go by their house tonight.

We have 3 menorahs, one for each family member, but often by the the last night or two, we're usually down to lighting just our largest one. Bring on the latkes and jelly donuts - Happy Hanukkah to all who celebrate it!

And to others - Merry Christmas, Happy Kwanzaa, Happy Winter Solstice, Happy New Year...may your holidays be surrounded by loved ones no matter what or how you choose to celebrate this season.

We celebrate Hanukkah since dh and I are both Jewish. My 6 year old is very excited. Yesterday I was at the school playing the dreidle game with her class (public school). They also learn a bit about Christmas and kwanza. It is amazing that giving the little kids a 15cent dreidle and telling them you can keep it made them so happy/wild. We just light one menorah for the entire family. Tonight we are going to temple for a Hanukkah singalong though I will say other than the dreidle song I'm lost. This is my dd's first year in Hebrew School so it is all new. Hopefully my 2 year old will be good. Tomorrow night we are going over my brother's house and will have latkes. Every night my dd wants to call grandparents (both sides) and do the blessing for them over the phone. There is a a short prayer/blessing that you say each night which she is very excited to know. .
