Big fan - I occasionally make it at home (slightly healthier version), but usually just order it while dining out (especially in the cold weather months).

I like it if it’s not too salty. I have had some soup that tasted like pure salt, to the point you couldn’t taste anything else. I also prefer it if the onions are rough chopped so they aren’t stringy in the soup. I should not have to swirl soup like spaghetti.

This is a big no for me. The flavor of onions is fine but the texture freaks me out. I’ll eat an onion bagel, dip, onion powder, I grate them into food I make for flavor but biting into one I cannot do. I’m fine with garlic, shallots, chives, etc.

I used to love it, sort of.

worked in a building where the cafe owner would occasionally make homemade soup among other items. The French Onion was my favorite. Then when I started ordering it elsewhere I learned that she wasn’t making “real” French onion soup and turns out I dislike the real thing.

Have tried it and am really not a fan. I can't stand onions - don't mind the onion flavour, seasoning or smaller chopped onion used in recipes, but really don't like bigger chunks or pieces of onion, cooked or raw. I'm also a bit weird about soup, I dont like bits or chunks in my soup of any type whether meat or veg. The texture of soup with other food or bits in it is just something I struggle to stomach. The only exception is croutons or bread, as you can't eat soup without them! Needless to say, soup isn't something I eat very often, if at all.

Going on a Princess Cruise in the fall and French Onion Soup is on their "Favorites" menu in the dining room. Favorites being items that are available every night. We may be eating our weight in French Onion Soup that week.

I like it. Unfortunately though it is a menu item that has not been equally good everywhere I have tried it.

I really love the flavor of french onion soup but I only tend to eat it during the cold winter months.

We make French Onion Soup at least once a month, it’s my husband’s favorite soup. One change we make: We don’t put the bread & cheese on top to melt. Instead, we slice up a baguette, put the slices under a broiler for a minute or two and then drizzle balsamic vinegar or balsamic glaze on top, finished with Gruyère cheese and some basil or oregano and then broil until slightly melted. We dip these into the soup.

I’ve never tried caramelizing onions in the oven- do you just mix everything together and bake? How long? The recipe we use calls for sliced leeks to be added after 15 minutes of caramelizing, so I’d need to figure that in too. I would like to try it though.

I don’t love all the onions so much and will sometimes use an immersion blender for a few seconds - but that definitely makes the soup thicker.
Get the onions started on the stove-butter and olive oil. Then place in a 350 oven-lid off and stir occasionally. If it's getting a little too brown, pop the lid on.So much easier than the stovetop!

Hmm, I may have to check that out!
Regarding the Costco French Onion soup, it seems to be a seasonal item around here. In the past I've found it during winter months, but with Costco you never know!
