French onion soup is a classic soup that many enjoy. The restaurant my DH and I went to for our anniversary specializes in making outstanding French Onion Soup, which is what inspired this poll. For those that don’t know what this soup is, here ya go……

Now that you all know what it is, let’s discuss this soup today. Give us your oniony good answer……

Have you ever had French Onion Soup?
If yes…..what is your opinion of this soup?
(multiple choice)

For Me……..I have ate it a few times many years ago and I want to like it, but I just can’t do it :sad2: I love onions, just not this soup. I will eat it if I had to, so I voted that it’s edible, but I will never choose to eat it.

LOVE IT!!! ❤️ we used to have a restaurant here that it was their specialty so sad when they went out of business they had the best French onion soup always ordered it when we ate there have yet to find another restaurant that makes it as well as they did I have tried it in a few of the DISNEY restaurants was sadly disappointed we have one French restaurant it’s more like a bistro and when I do eat I will order their French onion soup hit or miss sometimes it’s good sometimes it’s not but I do love fried onion soup
Now I have tried making it at home I won’t make that mistake again it’s a big pain in the butt it’s a lot of work

My favorite and I make it a lot.Trick is to carmelize the onions in the oven, not on the stove.Use beef and chicken stock and red wine.Lots of pepper. And don't use a sweet onion like Vidalias because they have too much sugar in them.

Great time saving technique!
I use a mixture of sweet onions (Bermudan, Vidalia ,etc) and yellow/Spanish onions since carmelising sweetens them anyway. I generally fortify with sherry instead of red wine and often use oxtail beef stock when available.

I can't do it, too much onion for me.

I have a fun memory about it, though. We were in Paris for my 30th birthday trip and had a really late dinner one night after a very long day (Versailles, Eiffel Tower, walking across the whole city). It's like 10pm or later at this point, restaurant is winding down. It comes time for dessert and my dad asks for the French onion soup, like a weirdo. The waitress is a bit surprised, but says she'll ask the kitchen but they might not be cooking anymore since it's late. They actually made him the soup! French onion soup for dessert at 10pm.
(Highly recommend Bistrot Richelieu if you're ever in the area)

It's one of those things that I love the look and idea of it and like the first few bites, but after that, I tend to end up wishing there were more cheese and wishing that soggy bready crouton were a nice fresh piece of bread to just dip in the soup as I please.

As a child I used to pick onions from my Grandma's garden and eat them like an apple.

Now I can't even stand the smell of onions because eating them makes my stomach hurt so badly. French onion soup is off the menu for me because of this.

I love it....if done right

A few years ago I was in Quebec City and ordered french onion soup - you'd think it'd be good there, right? It came out and it was a light tan color - it used beer in the stock instead of red wine. I didn't even know that was a thing. I didn't really care for it. I don't like the flavor profile of beer at all. I don't drink wine either, but don't mind the taste for cooking and such.

We make French Onion Soup at least once a month, it’s my husband’s favorite soup. One change we make: We don’t put the bread & cheese on top to melt. Instead, we slice up a baguette, put the slices under a broiler for a minute or two and then drizzle balsamic vinegar or balsamic glaze on top, finished with Gruyère cheese and some basil or oregano and then broil until slightly melted. We dip these into the soup.

I’ve never tried caramelizing onions in the oven- do you just mix everything together and bake? How long? The recipe we use calls for sliced leeks to be added after 15 minutes of caramelizing, so I’d need to figure that in too. I would like to try it though.

I don’t love all the onions so much and will sometimes use an immersion blender for a few seconds - but that definitely makes the soup thicker.
