Originally from Chicago - knew what it was from the title and had many many times. Love tavern style pizza. Took a little time after moving to CA to find a good on here and I did - they are originally from Chicago (mural of Wrigley Field and tons of Chicago sports memorbilia there). We always ask for paper thin and extra crispy, cut in squares of course. Our place does have a good deep dish but we really prefer the tavern style. And as @LilyWDW above me stated, tavern really is thinner than thin crust - there is a difference in the two.

We typically get sausage only, but sometimes add pepperoni. No veggies on the pizza. That is what a side salad is for. LOL

I am more familiar with the term “bar pie”, and there are several places nearby known for them. But there are also places known for their thin crust pizza, that just call it “pizza”!

The ones I have had are cut them in the regular triangle shape. Rectangle slices was usually reserved for an extra thick type, often referred to around here as Sicilian.

I’m not big on Sicilian, buy I love a grandma pie!

My daughter moved to Germany last year and last weekend was telling us she finally ordered pizza there. She was sharing websites from pizza places near her and there are some pizza toppings that are common there that I have not seen here.
Sliced hard boiled eggs, pretzels, asparagus with hollandaise sauce, dill pickles and baked potato chunks seemed to be offered at most pizza places there.
Don't flame me, I love pizza, but to me, PIZZA is PIZZA. I an unsophisticated pizza lover. I have no idea what New York style, Chicago Style or Tavern style are, they are all good.
Just don't call it a pie, it's pizza

Never heard this type of pizza being called this but then in the UK we probably call it something different, not entirely sure what.

I've eaten this type before and would happily eat it again, although it's probably not my go to choice when offered an entire pizza menu. I usually go for the thicker/standard type bases or stuffed crust - the ones less good for you 😂

NY/NJ are the pizza kings, it’s a pie.

Yes, I've eaten Tavern style although nowhere around me do we call it that. I live between Milwaukee and Chicago and any round pizza you order in a restaurant or get takeout is cut in squares.

Thin, Traditional, Deep dish, I love them all!

I like pretty. much all pizza, so I DO like tavern style. Usually if I had my way I would like pepperoni. I also like supreme without onions.

Chicago all my life. First pizza for me was early 50's. It was thin, today's tavern style. Back then, we just called it pizza. Most places made rather similar thin pizza, cut in squares. Then the different kinds started to get popular. The thick crust, the deep dish, the stuffed, etc. Recently, the tavern name has been added to describe thin crust, cut in squares. I pretty much like them all. It used to be served in taverns because with it being very salty it increased beer sales and was cgeap. With pizza a rather expensive item today it served free as much as in the past. Cheap popcorn often today.
Does that Lou M—— pizza chain in Chicago serve this? I think we got a “regular” pizza there.
And yes, Angie, Lou Malnati's dies make a thin crust now, recent years. And it is excellent. Though I do prefer Malnati's deep dish.

I love Vito and Nicks pizza in Chicago. We usually get a combination of pepperoni and veggies. My mom also loved Vito and Nicks and used to order “Around the World” with no anchovies which is a kind of supreme pizza.

To be clear: Just because a pizza has a thin crust, it doesn't make it a "tavern pizza." According to the article highlighted, it also has to have the filling go to the edge AND be cut into squares.

The only square cut pizzas around here are thick crust Sicilian pizzas. Or something we used to eat in grade school called tomato pie, which was just tomato paste spread on top of a thick crust pizza, (but the dough is not dense like Sicilian,) and it's lightly dusted with grated Parmesan cheese. It could also be eaten hot or cold.

I don't see the point in cutting pizza into small squares. Is everyone just supposed to have one small square? 🤷‍♀️ And then be polite and not eat too many squares? I like our triangle slices. They are BIG, and even then, I usually eat 2 slices. Seriously, give people a decent size slice. 🍕 And they shouldn't have to feel self-conscious about eating it. Mangia Bene!

Same for me in NW Indiana ::yes::

While the term "tavern style" isn't common around here, there are a few places that serve it that way. Personally, thin crust is not my preference. It's okay I guess, but I like a thicker crust or even deep-dish better.
