I do not like corned beef and cabbage. At all. The meat is too fatty for me.

Has this been "a thing" for a long time? I only heard of it as an adult. It was never a tradition in my family. (My mother likes corned beef but my father does not -- and his mom was Irish.) I also went to Catholic school for 12 years with many Irish-American families and I don't remember hearing about other families doing it either, although it's possible they did.

My in-laws (not at all Irish) do it though. In fact, my mother-in-law made it last weekend when we all got together because she didn't think we'd see each other for St. Patrick's Day. Thankfully, she also made lasagna. I detest corned beef and cabbage. Thank heaven for lasagna.

It is absolutely a longstanding tradition, though I associate it more with the Northeast, so it may be regional too. There are LOTS of people of Irish descent up there! I don't think anyone ever boils corned beef and root vegetables here in the south, but my grandmother was from Rhode Island so it was a staple in our house. She was not of Irish descent either, which is why I see it as regional.

I make it and sometimes go buy another one soon after since everyone enjoyed the meal and we didn’t end up with leftovers. My DH, who hates vegetables, will even eat the carrots—I don’t think he eats the cabbage though and the potatoes are never the issue. I love the corned beef, the rest of it is just okay.

I planned to have this for the first time this year. Haven’t made it to the store yet so we will see if I do or not.

Tried it a few times and wanted to really like it, but the taste just doesn't sit right with me.

I hear it makes a difference if you do the corning process yourself, but it also looks like a chore and if I were going to put that much work into preparing meat I think I'd do something I know I really like.

I have never had it but would try it, just wouldn’t make it myself.

Did I miss something? I thought this was a question about corned beef and cabbage, not St. Patrick's Day.

I was expecting lots or strong opinions on whether coleslaw, sauerkraut, sauteed or boiled cabbage was best.

For me, coleslaw on the corned beef sandwich but the rye must be toasted, or a nice oven braised corned beef brisket (flat not point), cabbage sauteed with carrots and onions and some chunky hand mashed mashed potatoes with dill.

I love corned beef and I love cabbage (any way it's prepared from raw to in slaw to boiled to semi-stir fried). I haven't eaten corned beef and cabbage in years, the last time was in the UK pavilion in Epcot. I was so disappointed because there was literally one leaf of cabbage in it. My mama used to make it a lot, sure stank up the house. We did not eat it on St. Patrick's Day as we didn't celebrate it, but Mama usually made it during cold weather. Oh, and we are from the south, Georgia. I am 5% Irish, my brother (full brother same mother and father) is 11% Irish. My 3x great grandfather on my father's side came over from Ireland.

I’m not sure what I’m making for St. Patrick’s Day. Used to make a traditional type meal, but too much food for us nowadays.

Maybe go to the local Irish pub and see what shenanigans we can get into. Oh, maybe some food too. 🍻 🍀

I did it in the instant a pot last year came out great. I have to work on the timing for the cabbage it got kinda mushy-you do it after your cook the meat. Normally the Butcher shop we go to has buy one get 2 free but not this year and cabbage is not on sale either.

You know….I could be annoyed at the way this poll started out, but I’m not, the discussions that resulted from it were interesting to read, and if none of us know how to make bacon and cabbage now then shame on us 🙄

It's Irish American, because corned beef was easier and cheaper for Irish immigrants to get over here when they were trying to make the traditional meal.

I tried explaining it on Slo's poll about what festivities you were partaking in on St. Patrick's Day, but it looks like it read in one eyeball and out the other because here we are again.

It went from 0 to 100 pretty darn quick. Seems like a bit of an overreaction.
Yes it definitely did

Again, this goes back to the St. Patrick's day poll. I think I first mentioned corned beef and cabbage. Yep, I'm the instigator in this fiasco. oopsie! I think my penance will be a Shamrock Shake. Sounds fitting.:p

ETA: I did get it! Forgot to snap pic while indulging, but you can see the slight green remains. 😂
