How good are you at making small talk with people you don’t know?


For Me…..I’m a Small Talk Master - LOL!!! Right @piglet1805?! (for those that don’t know she’s my DD19, also known as baby slo - she does do the polls, but doesn’t post yet).

*Inspiration for today’s poll is me working closely with the public for 35 years (still do) and also was an assistant coach to my DD19’s softball teams for 11 years. I’ve spent over half my life small talking

I'm like you, Slo. I've worked with the public and children many many years. Now being retired I go play Blackjack at our local casino and talk with many interesting people.

eta......so I guess I would rate myself a good small talker.

I'm very good one on one. It’s big groups that trip me up.

ETA - I don't start up random conversations. I mean more in social situations.

I'm good, but I seldom leave the house. Very limited opportunities for small talk.

I hate small talk and try to avoid it. It's always so awkward.

DW can talk to practically anyone about practically anything. Chatting up strangers in line at the supermarket or at airports, etc. Me, I usually don’t talk to strangers unless they initiate the conversation, and even then I try to keep it brief.

I think I am good at it. I enjoy meeting people.

I'm fine at it. I'm often in business/social situations with new people and can easily pass the time with them, if they're also so inclined. I don't go out of my way to strike up conversation with random strangers in check-out lines or on airplanes or whatever though.

I absolutely hate small talk with strangers. I don’t care about their job, their kids, their hobbies, etc. and they don’t need to know about mine. Especially hate it when someone starts yapping at me in an elevator. Just smile, shut up and we will be great

I am super introverted and really hate small talk(on the phone and in person) but my job/hobbies have always required me to do it so I have become good at it-I just pterodactyl scream internally while I do it. I am perfectly fine with texts/emails though-it's weird lol

I am good at it, very good at it, but as an introvert I can’t bring myself to do it unless forced to. Whenever we had a business related function I would get so many compliments from my colleagues about how easy I make it look, but they never knew how painful those interactions were for me.

My BFF taught me how to work a room. She married a West Point grad and went to a lot of Hails and Farewells. I observed her and I can approach anyone to start a conversation. My motto is that there are no strangers, just potential friends.

My DS learned it from me and he can walk into a room of "potential friends" and come out with contact information from everyone in the room.

Years ago, my DH and I went to a party that was hosted by one of his customers. I knew the host and that was it. I asked my DH to stay with me and introduce me to some people. We walked in and he jetted off to the other side of the room. I walked up to the bar and started talking to a man who was standing there, too. He and I had a wonderful conversation. When we were all seated for dinner, the host pointed to the man with whom I had engaged and said, "he is one of my foremen. He never speaks unless it is work related and he needs to tell a worker what to do." He was shocked to find out that I had learned a lot about him in the time he and I spoke.

I hate it. I can do it passably if I have to, but I do not enjoy it and always leave exhausted. I started a new job this year and the company Christmas party is tonight. I do not know a lot of people outside my little department and I am NOT looking forward to small talking.

Not the best.

I'm fine with brief pleasantries with actual strangers (like in lines and such) but small-group social things are more difficult for me.

And forget the phone!

I’d call myself a master. I don’t start it but have no problem small talking with anyone who speaks to me first. Comes from decades of customer service work where you have to build a rapport quickly.
