slightly OT - Powerchair question

I know this is a little off-topic, but I am having trouble locating info on the net. DH has consented to buying a powerchair for himself. My Dr. has told me that I can no longer push his manual chair. Anyway, he is getting a Jazzy 1121. We need a power lift for our minivan. I have located a company here in town that will install one (Bruno) for $2760. However, I can get the same lift or or other lifts for much less money (800-1800). Has anyone ordered a lift and then had someone install it? Who did it? My mechanic has no idea what I am talking about (very small town). Does it come with instructions for the mechanic to use? Supplier suggested a U-haul place, but we don't have one.
Secondly - how do I know if I am getting a good lift? Does anyone know about SilverStar lifts?
Sorry - we are not getting much help from our wheelchair company - they sent us to the place that wanted the 2700.

hi.
Your OT question is just fine to ask. We're a little more relaxed here on whether or not something needs to be WDW related (I figure, if the question helps someone get around, that's WDW related enough for me).
Anyway, we have a van with a ramp, so I don't have that much info about lifts (but I know some of our other posters have lifts). The one thing you might want to consider is who will service your lift if you have any problems (or just need regular maintenance on it) ?
If you can't get anyone to service it in your area, the bargain lift may not turn out to be a bargain.

I have a lift for my Jazzy 1103. I researched many lifts but found that for my money the Bruno lift was the best. It was installed by the dealer and has been well worth the money I spent. It has been installed for over 2 years and I have not had a problem with it. Right now I need to repair my Jazzy (bolt was lost for the controller but there are 2 bolts so it is not out of commission but just needs mantainence) but no problem with the lift.
Do not get the Hercules. It is not strong enough for the Jazzy. Really made for the scooters not the pc.

Hi, I have a VMI lift for my powerchair. The cost is similar to the Bruno. I have had one problem in the past year. I had to have the belt replace because it got twisted and then shredded. It was our fault not the lift. Cost for replacement belt and labor- $56.
I feel your quoted cost for having the Bruno lift installed is reasonable. I know it is ALOT of money. But it will be well worth it in the overall picture. I agree completely with Sue.. re:vendor service.
You can also call Bruno direct, they will be able to give you a list of vendors in your area. That way you can call the vendors and ask for price quotes. Competition between vendors can be a good thing ;)

The best thing I like about my VMI lift is that it has two keychain controls, in addition to the controls on the lift. I can get my chair in and out while seated in the van. Since I have trouble standing, this is a handy feature. The keychain controls are similar to the one you have to lock/unlock your car.
Best wishes!
