Probably kind of a weird and unique question, but has anyone who has stayed at AKL in a savannah view room slept with the door out to the balcony openly just slightly to hear the sounds of the animals at night. I tend to sleep better and fall asleep faster with natural outdoor noises and would think you could hear some nice noises out on the savannah at night. Just curious.

Yes we did but you have to also remember that the workers who look after the animals do start early and can wake you

Yes, I did - I don't know if they 'pipe in' crickets chirping - it's pretty loud. You also get hear the calls of the birds from time to time and, I believe, zebras - sound a bit like donkeys. It's magical. You do also hear the trucks, but they drive slowly on the savannahs and aren't very loud.

On one of our stays, we were very close to the barn and they fed the animals at about 6am - we were woken several times by zebras... ahem... passing wind. Really.

All part of the magic!:rotfl: 49 days until Jambo House for me.

We have been going to the AKL since it opened. I have never heard any animal sounds, even while sitting on the balcony.

The animals are taken in at night so there isn't really much to hear other then general resort outside sounds. The time that they go in for the night and come out in the mornings can vary day to day depending on the various animals.

Keep in mind too that there are cameras watching all the balconies so watch your curtains.

I don't think the animals go in at night, unless there are serious weather issues.

I remember seeing giraffes and zebra out at all hours. The giraffes would sleep in the tall grass, as if we couldn't see them, ha.

Early in the morning you hear strange sounds, like cowbells ringing. The different savannahs have different sounds that they train the animals to respond to, to call them in for their checkups and feeding. I believe they use the same technique on the savannah at AK.

Highly recommend the Wanyama Safari - you learn a lot about the work behind the scenes and you get a very close-up look.

They actually do have "night houses" for the animals and use specific calls for each species to have them return at night. Very much like the training for feeding etc.

Last December I had a room overlooking the Uzima savannah and we heard some animals at night with our door cracked. Mostly birds, and one attention seeking zebra. (I named him Archibald. He'd walk over to the 'center' of the savannah and make a few calls then when everyone came out onto the balcony to look at him he'd walk away out of site. Then about 1/2 an hour later he'd do it again. I loved it.)

It wasn't all night, and it was fairly quiet, but still very cool. I did get woken up by the trucks in the morning, but I'm a really light sleeper when I'm not at home, so that have had something to do with that.

Because of the air conditioning/heating and bugs, you'll want to keep that door closed.

I was thinking the same.. wouldn't the bugs come in? Or is there a screen door?

Nope, just the sliding glass door. Sorry, but for me Air Conditioning and a bug free room trump possibly hearing a zebra passing gas during the night

Actually it is not a good idea to leave the door open and the air running as it causes condensation to build up on the windows which results in wet carpet.

Not to mention roaches, birds, snakes, etc.

At Kidani - the hoofed animals are taken in at some point during the evening or night. The times vary. You will notice in the mornings that certain species may or may not be out yet. The later they come in - the later they wake up and head out. Giraffes in particular will sleep late often.

The only sounds I've ever really noticed off my balcony there are random kids screaming, people talking and hunter wannabes going on about where they'd aim for a particular animal.

You are getting confused with the Animal Kingdom. The Lodge savannah's are not connected to the park. Animals stay our on the Lodge savannah's for 23 hours a day. They are take "in" only for 1 hour for a health checkup.

The animals are out all night, and they do make some noises, but the humidity, bugs, heat, etc. made it a no brainer for me- the doors were shut at night.

On the train to Rafiki's Planet Watch, some of the CMs point out the animals' "night houses" and explain they have different calls for each animals to bring them in. They also explain that AK closes earlier than the rest of the parks because it can take as long as three hours to rally all the animals into their night houses. Not sure if there are different animals outside the rooms at AKL, but this made it sound like the animals are in fact housed each night rather than roaming around the savannah. But I'm sure animals like birds, etc are still out.

One of the CM's that stands on the walkout is who told us over at Kidani. A manager at Sanaa told us the same thing at one point. We'll be checking in there on June 7 - either way I have no plans on sleeping with the door open.

It was on the Wanyama safari where we learned they stay out all day / night except for their checkup and feeding, which goes savanaah by savannah and takes one or two hours. The safari guide was one of the lead caretakers for the animals on the Uzima savannah, so presumably in the know.

I imagine that if, like in most things, you exercise reason and common sense, you'll be fine. I turn the AC back to the lowest setting, crack the door so I can hear the night sounds, and pull the curtain to dissuade insects. I've never had problems with dampness, and I've never seen a single insect in my room.

Again, reason and common sense.... Probably not advisable at high noon, during hurricanes and the height of love bug season, but I'm sure most people could figure that out.

And if you're not a 'night sounds' person, well then, nothing to worry about - leave your door closed.

I would take a look around your balcony- there have been recent reports of wasp nest problems but hopefully they've all been resolved. That said, I wouldn't make the A/C run like that at home and treat a resort room like my home when I'm there. In the summer it's still hot and humid in central FL, even in the middle of the night, so the a/c will struggle to keep the room cool. Just a thought...

This is exactly correct! This is for the Animal Kingdom PARK. The Lodge is not connected at all to the park. They have their own animals and Savannahs. I know this for a FACT! :)
