DS is 13. DD is 9. What do you all do for the sleeping arrangements. This year we had a 2 bedroom because we just signed on and had the previous year's points. We only have 200 at VWL and would like to stay at Boardwalk this year. Will they rent a cot? (knowing you only have 4 people?)

another question; do any of you have family who think you purchase these points for "family vacations"? We brought them down this year and last and we hear"next year when we come...."
My dh and I did this for us and the kids.

Suz--

We have an Aerobed...one of those inflatable spare bed dealies (packs down to about the size of duffel bag). Our kids, 8 and 12, prefer them to roll-aways/cots and vastly prefer them to sleeping together on the sofa sleeper! They alternate nights on the Aerobed and sofabed.

We just purchased an Aero Bed for our first trip home too. We have 2 teen boys who would never sleeping on the same bed together!!

May I ask, what do you mean by "just signed on and had the previous years points?" We are joining in two more weeks, do you get added points somehow when you join?

Suzjoh must have purchased a resale where there were prior year's points left over.

Don't think there are any rollaways available at DVC. You may have to resort to the Aerobed or splitting the kids - DD with Mom and DS with Dad. Could you use the sofa cushions to make a bed for the one who gets stuck off teh pull out? Make them alternate.

Or you could just tell them, one will have to stay home unless they agree to share a bed.

We have taken family members from time to time and none of them have bugged us about taking them again. I guess we make enough trips without additional family members they know that they will have to be invited. These points are for "family vacations" OUR family.;)

If you enjoyed having your relatives along tell them they are welcome but have to pay the difference on the required accomodation(s). If they agree its one way to upgrade to a 2 bedroom by renting more points...if they don't then buy an aerobed or sleeping bags.

I don't mean to sound harsh or opportunistic...but when my sister expressed similar sentiments I politely explained that it would cost her more the next time. Her family still comes along with me on non-DVC trips because they couldn't afford on their own what they can get if they go with me (plus they like traveling with me!). So far I haven't invited her whole family to DVC because it would be too much work & too much money to get the extra points.

An air mattress w/ alternating nights is the best option, I think.

RE: Family Members- if you have only enough points for a one bedroom explain that your points would not be able to accomodate a larger group, you would love to travel w/ them and suggest that they rent points from someone on the rent/trade board.

Aero bed seems like a great idea. I'm in MA and one of our DEPT stores are closing (AMES) I just saw one yesterday. I think I will grab it. CHEAP!
I had extra points this year because we bought at the end of 2001. Aug was my use year, so I had last year's 200 points and also this years. We just came back 8/30. I had a total of 400. It was not a resale.
Yesterday my husband spoke to his Mum about DVC vacations and explained that we only have enough points for a one bedroom but are more than happy to help them with accomadations. She may not have liked it, but that is the way it is. They can make it work. We always did.
It will be nice if we could go by ourselves. We always have a good time but I make all the P.S and schedule the days, rent the car, and purchase tickets. Lot of pressure when you do it for the extended family. If I screw up, I would rather %^%$ the arrangements for just the four of us!!!!!

Suzjoh - I'm not sure what the cost is at Ames but if you have a BJs or Costco card, you may want to check their price too. I believe it was only $49 or $59 for a twin at one of these locations. Annmarie

make sure it's the aero bed brand and not an imitation!

we have the aerobed with the electric pump $99 for twin, my in-laws bought a different brand and there's a big difference!

we always bring it with us even with just our DS. He stays in the MBR with us on the floor in the corner. This way we have use of the lr and kitchen while he's asleep.

On a previous trip, we had invited my niece to stay with us on 2 nights when we all were in Disney. She just used the cushions and we rapped a sheet around and she did fine (she was 17)....the areobed sounds excellent.

BWV had rollaways for $15 a night a few years ago - Purchase the aero bed and you will have it for many future trips. We have even gone to WaLMart and gotten one of the cheap $15 air mattresses and used the hair dryer to blow it up(have to be careful with that project though). Worked great when the kids were younger and if the luggage space was tight didn't mind leaving it there. We also used the couch and love seat cushions and actually had one child who preferred that. Lots of options - have a great trip! Oh yes remember there are only sheets for the bed and sofa so pack what you need for the additional bed.
Have a great trip.

If you are going to have people sleeping on sofa cushions, aero beds, etc., do yourself a favor and switch to a 1 BR at OKW. The 1 BR at OKW are really the only onsite DVC resorts that have room to put people on the floor with aero beds, sofa cushions etc. in the living room/dining room/kitchen area.

We have a similar family with DD being 13 and DS being 8. They were fine on the queen sleeper sofa a couple of years ago. They still could manage, but my wife and I are slowly losing patience with the "You Touched ME - No I Didn't, You Touched Me" and the "Mom. He's On My Side Of The Bed" conversation that seems to drive all parents up a wall! This past summer, DS did what others have suggested and slept on the sofa cushions. He was OK with that, and so were his parents. However, I think that as they grow older in the upcoming years, the time may come where we do the 2BDR thing for just the 4 of us. This has caused us to talk about adding on a few more points to cover that arrangement, and it gives us a tidy and unconfined living room / kitchen area to enjoy more fully. That also gives you the second bathroom as one bathroom between 2 parents and 2 teenagers becomes to get old after awhile as well.

We've used an air mattress for years, just because our boys are huge and can't fit in a bed together.

One thing to be aware of - if you have one of the cheaper models of air mattresses, like we do, don't rely on the resort's hair dryer to inflate it. The settings on the DVC hair dryers are "warm" and "hot" - no "air only." It not only gets the intake area of the mattress very hot, but once the air cools and deflates, you almost have to blow up the whole thing by mouth. After a long day in the parks, it can be a frustrating ordeal. ;)

We have used both the cushions and the areo bed and let me tell ya the areo bed is sooo much better. I was visiting my brother and had to sleep on an areo bed and it was quite comfy . we got the camping areo bed with the seperate motor and it packs down to practally nothing. My boys have used it for sllep overs and camping trips so it hasgotton lots of use. I know at BWV and WLV the aroe bed fits nicely in the bathroom closet along with the persons luggage so they have a little room to them selves then during the day we stand the bed up and close the door. The closet is in the bathroom portion with the tub so it does not interfer with the bathroom use. good luck and enjoy
