I had a sleep study done almost two weeks ago due to unexplained fatigue with normal bloodwork. It was a split night, so if I had sleep apnea they would have woken me up to put on a CPAP and do a titration. They did not, so obviously it was not that.

In the morning, the woman indicated that there was something going on as she said my "doctor would have information" for me. (Of course, she's not at liberty to say.) We were talking in the elevator and I mentioned some weird I was dreams I was having and she did say that I was definitely a dreamer. (I have very vivid dreams.

I got a call this evening from the doctor's office asking me to make an appointment to go over results. I did not have to do this with the blood work which makes me think that there was indeed something there. I am wondering what other kinds of things besides sleep apnea they would find with a sleep study? I am not an insomniac by any means. I know the doc will tell me, but I hate not knowing and there's a good chance I won't be able to get into see her until Friday or some time early next week.

Sleep studies show:

EEG (brain waves),
Eye movements,
Muscle activity,
EKG (heart activity and rate),
Blood oxygen level (using oximetry, no needles involved),
Breathing,
Snoring, and
Leg/body movements.

Sleep studies can help diagnose sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, periodic limb movements during sleep, and narcolepsy.

there are a few possibilities that I can think of:

1) restless leg/sleep movement disorder
2) teeth grinding (bruxism)
3) some kind of REM sleep disorder/disruption of sleep phases
4) snoring not associatd with apnea (unusual but possible)

Those are the main ones that come to mind (in order of most to least likely). None of these should be particularly dangerous or scary. Narcolepsy is something to consider, but you would generally need more studies to pin that down (daytime nap studies); however, it's possible they can see some irregularities in your sleep phases that suggest you need further investigation for narcolepsy.

best of luck - hope it's nothing bad!

Thanks! I always hate it when they give you a call like that. I don't care that it's over the phone- just tell me! The office is very nice, but she isn't in on Thursdays so I have to wait until tomorrow. I have always heard sleep studies in the context of sleep apnea, so I wasn't sure what else there would be. I was also curious if others had significant non-apnea results, what they were and how they were treated.

maybe sleepwalking or you're up and about??? That might explain why you're so tired
