I think we are finally going to bite the bullet and get a sleep number bed. We've been wanting one for years, but was never in the budget.
Do you have to get their foundation or can you use any foundation. We have one in great condition so we'd rather use that and not pay for another one.

Has anyone done this?

You do not need their foundation. We have had one for about 11 years now and used our own. When we bought one the foundation system they had was really bad which is why we used our own. I don't know if they have improved or not.

We had a water bed before ours. I used the plastic parts (is that what you mean by "foundation"?) under the mattress only because it raised it up enough to get past the water bed frame.

We have a sleep number bed with their foundation. After trying every other kind of bed/mattress on the market, this is the best bed we've ever had. :thumbsup2

Good to hear. We went ahead and got one. It should be delivered in the next couple weeks. I can't wait!!!

we have a sleep number bed also and we do use the foundation but I'm not sure if it's required. We love, love love this bed. it did take a few weeks to get used to though and to find the right number that worked well for me so don't worry if it's not great right away; just keep adjusting the numbers until you find what works well for you.

I swear they told us that if we did not buy their foundation, they would not honor the warranty. We have been mattress shopping recently and I may have them confused with someone else. I can't keep them all straight anymore.

We use our own bed frame (is that what you mean by foundation?). We've had ours for 5 years and can't imagine ever using any other type of bed again. Whenever we're away from home for the night, we always say "I miss our bed!!!!" Like a pp said, it did take a few weeks to get our #'s right and we still adjust them now and then depending on how we're feeling. Hope you love your new bed OP!!!!

Just in case you're still deciding whether or not to get one. . .

We have a Sleepnumber bed. (My sleepnumber is 40. ) Hate it. I'd much rather have our old waterbed back. The sleepnumber bed sounded like a good idea, and it was attractive for the first few weeks, but then we started realizing all the elements of discomfort. We've applied feather beds and foam mats on top, to try to address the inflexible nature of an inflated mattress, but we're still very unhappy. It does exactly what it is supposed to do. It just isn't anywhere near as comfortable for us as a waterbed was.

. . . If you've already decided to get one, please just ignore my message. :goodvibes

Run, Run, Run! Send the fricken thing back before you unpack it....refuse delivery...whateverrrrrrrrrrr.
Seriously. We HATE our Sleep Number bed. Whatever you do, don't finance the damned thing, when I think about how much interest we paid on the dumb thing we hate so much I cringe. Our next big purchase is a new mattress. Hubs has a bad back and this bed just plain sucks.

We stayed at a hotel in Austin that had the Sleepnumber beds, we were so excited to try them, and of course the one in our room was BROKEN. It was like a big sinkhole. We were going to change rooms, but we didnt figure it out until we were in bed & we were only there one night. We did call the frontdesk, they said a lot of them didnt work properly. For the price, I would make sure there is a warranty/

I suspect a traditional mattress is as likely to pop a spring or develop lumpiness than the Sleepnumber bed is likely to fail as in the case you outlined. The 20 year warranty is actually quite good, but, of course, as I indicated earlier (after the 30 day home trial), the warranty only covers the bed not doing what it is supposed to. It doesn't cover you becoming disenchanted with the bed as it is supposed to be.
