As an aside, I've found that low-point tickets from DTW to MCO using NW/CO/DL are just about impossible for what would be considered "busy" periods (mid-winter through mid-spring), especially on weekends, but often possible for "low" periods, and even on weekends. I would imagine the same is true for most northern cities.
I tend to use my miles on "what the heck" trips. If I'm taking a planned vacation, I often find it's a better deal to just buy the tickets I want. If I know I'm flying somewhere, I won't use miles unless I'm getting at least a penny per mile in value. I'm more willing to get "cheap" value for miles if it is a trip I wouldn't take without them.
