Skylanders Trap Team characters question

Can someone with a good knowledge of Skylanders Trap Team give me some ideas of what I should purchase in addition to the starter kit? My DS wants this for Christmas and I'm having a tough time sorting out what I should buy!

I have two packages of the traps (3 in each), but no other characters yet. I'd like him to be able to play with his older brother on Christmas Day and have enough pieces to keep them both involved in the game.

I don't play myself, but DH and DD play together. In my limited knowledge I would suggest getting a few characters that do not share the same elements/powers. There are areas of the game that require a specific element to enter the area.

I would get at least 1 other Trap Master figure. The starter pack comes with Snap Shot which is a water element trap master and I would suggest another Trap Master other than another water one. Unlike past games where element gates (locked side parts of a level) could be unlocked with any type of Skylander of that element, with Trap Team, only Trap Masters can unlock the element games.

The starter pack also comes with Food Fight which is a regular Skylander that a 2nd player can use but that figure can't be used to trap enemies or unlock the elemental gates.

You need a trap for each element. You also need Trap Masters (the expensive figures) for each element (some are not yet available). You don't need any of the regular characters or the mini characters. You can use any characters from the previous versions.

Yes. In Skylanders, you can always use the older characters on newer games.
