Skylanders giants

I bought the xbox 360 skylanders bundle that Walmart had on sale on black friday for $149 for my ds11. This is our first xbox and I know nothing about video games. He has asked for skylanders giants and the game in the pack is skybro? . My question is when looking online I found a starter pack for skylanders giants for xbox 360 for 49.99. Is this a good deal and is this what I need for him to play the game? Also what is involved with the live membership?

If you bought the Xbox Skylanders bundle, then you bought the Xbox and the Skylanders start up pack all in one. The $49 sale was pretty universal at most stores this weekend - if you needed the portal (the reusable part from the Skylanders Spyro set from last year).

If you got the bundle with the Xbox system, Skylanders portal and probably one figure, then start collecting a couple of other Skylander giant figures - there are 3 that at about $15 and nine that are about $9-$10. These open additional areas of the game.
