Id be very sceptical about what he has told you, these things automaticaly download new firmware as and when its released.
However, theres not much more you can do at the moment other than hope for the best.

When my 2 boxes went faulty, they started being unreliable of recording...the first box kept giving me "recording failed", but the 2nd box kept randomly freezing, meaning I was having to do the full system reset at least every few days, each time losing what I had recorded.

Well, after not a week,my new 3rd box tonight went a bit iffy.
Wor lass recorded some program but ended up watching it at the same time....so afterwards went to delete it. Pressing the yellow button to do so made it say "deleting", but instead of vanishing it stayed there but said "failed". It did this every time i pressed delete, but never vanished.
I went into the engineers menu and did the planner tidy option and it got rid of it and retained everything else....so im now keeping an eye on it.

oh dodgy

im starting to hate sky +

its like you cant live with and it you cant live without it.

mines been ok up to now (touch wood)

managed to tape loads on tuesday. the oc, csi and csi miami and something else but i cant remember what.

hopefully its sorted

It makes you wonder about these things, who to say they don't program to fail a few days after the end of the warranty? Either that or transmit a signal to disable the box is some way that requires an engineer callout at hugely inflated prices!

Call me a cynic but I work in the IT industry and I know how easy it would be to do such a thing!
On this subject, I read a story recently about the call-out fee for Sky Engineers and Sky's own "insurance" policies for the set-top boxes.

The claim was that there is a certain make of box that has a known problem. They said that if you rang Sky up with this problem, they'd say that it needed an engineer to make the fix - call out charge about £80. But hang up and ring back two minutes later quoting the name/account no. of someone who'd bought the Sky insurance (at £60 a year) and miraculously they'd be able to fix it on the spot by downloading a software patch to your box - no call out, no fee!

Sky of course denied all knowledge of this, but I wouldn't put it past them to be honest...

Well, we have had our Sky+ box for two days and last night it nearly burnt my house down. The box got so hot you couldnt touch it and the electrical burning smell was horrific.

Called Sky who helpfully told me it was "Probably faulty, so unplug it". They are coming tomorrow to invesigate. So now we have no Sky at all. Im giving it a new name, Skyminus.

new update for me too.

on sunday sky- broke yet again. dh rang them and they said "well take you through a system reset" he swore and demanded a new box. we got it yesterday. sky sucks. i think ill complain to trading standards. why are they still operating at such a shoddy standard.

From what you said recently, I figured you'd be calling them again sometime soon.
Lets hope the new box behaves itself.

The strange thing is that you read loads on the t'internet about people having multiple boxes etc, yet $ky on the phone will express sheer surprise that you are having problems with it......really annoying.

Another update. Sky man came to day and declared my "burning box" faulty. He told me he had replaced stacks of the Amstrad boxes and they were rubbish. Installed my new one, a "Pace" model, which he reckoned were tons better....guess what? That was faulty too! The modem doesnt work, so they are bringing ANOTHER one on Sunday! Thats 3 Sky+ boxes in less than a week. Im beginning to think this was a bad idea!!

I hope your problems get resolved satisfactorily Lucy & Allie.

It is a shame that the new technology Sky are using is so poor because the product itself is such a winner. It really does change what you watch and the way you watch it!
