Skippers Canteen

Looking forward to trying this in January! We're all pretty adventurous eaters, even my 4 yr old son, so if the menu keeps away picky or non-spice eaters, than hopefully there are less crowds for me! ;)

This is the one dining place on property I really HATE, after eating there last August.

The food is so salty a non-adventurous diner would not even notice any exotic flavors and the service was extremely slow. I highly discourage.

DH and I are at Disney now and tried Skipper Canteen for the first and last time last night. I owe you an apology for thinking you were exaggerating in your posts on another thread about this place. I ordered the pork, got two mouthfuls of fat covered in a thick salty sauce, and left the rest untouched. Our server removed it without comment, leading me to believe this was not uncommon.

DH and I loved it this September. Service was a little slow but no complaints from me as it kept me out of the humidity.

I wonder if you guys had the same bad dish? In general, the reviews for the food at this place are pretty positive.

The noodle bowl is not salty at all, and I don't recall the steak being particularly salty. I enjoyed both of those dishes and the arepas (now cachapas, but this was right after opening).

We ate there on Halloween...and had the same thoughts about the pork, rather disappointed in it, it was definitively too salty.

But the falafel appetizer was very good though, and the Kungaloosh desert was great

Honestly I wouldn't have cared so much about the salt. But the meat was all fat. It was the first time in all my years of eating in restaurants that I can say I was served an inedible meal.

I had sesame chicken like that a couple of years ago, but it was from a local, trashy Chinese restaurant...

We ate there about a month after it opened and really liked it. Note - we eat a lot of Indian and Chinese and Thai food at home anyway, so the flavors were not unusual to us. They also had a bubble tea.

We had the vegetarian curry and also a black cod in a light soy broth with baby bok choy that was a daily special that was really, really good. I would definitely go again.

I'm a huge huge fan of Indian food - love the lamb vindaloo in particular. We also love Thai food. It's not that Skipper Canteen had unfamiliar flavors. It's just that the food we were served was of very poor quality. It sounds like you fared much better.

We went during our October trip. Good food and we enjoyed the service as we're big fans of the Jungle Cruise, however, we found it to be too expensive for what we received, and probably wouldn't return.

The falafel and vegetable curry was delicious though and I would recommend that as a solid dish!

That's too bad... We may try it again in February.

We are eating dinner here our first night and are looking forward to it. But I've read several bad reviews of the pork dish so am steering clear. I'm trying to work up the nerve to get the whole fried fish! :)

The best thing about our meal here was the dessert. It was definitely the worst meal we had all week (Spring 2017). Not inedible, but was extremely underwhelming. We also had fatty pork with fairly flavorless sauce, curry stew was just meh, very salty dumplings. Plus the server just didn't know when to let go of the schtick. Likely a one and done for us.

I've kind of heard the opposite - the food was described to be much more adventurous than it really was. But I could be the one misremembering :rotfl:.

I think I'm a pretty adventurous eater (ex I like tripe). The food WAS NOT adventurous by my standards. Only one of my party of 6 liked her meal - and we all liked it too. She got the vegetable curry and we all ended up stealing a bite. We got the chicken, fish (both sustainable and fried), lamb chops and my son had the noodle soup. We actually felt it was bland overall. maybe it was an off night but we are in no hurry to return.

I just dined at Skipper Canteen last week during my trip and had a fantastic experience! My waitress and the hostess took the time to speak to me about the "artifacts" in the restaurant and about The Adventurer's Club. The food was delicious and I really loved the ambiance there.
