Skipper Canteen - What do you think?

How is the Skipper Canteen? We’ve never tried it before but it actually has reservations available Thanksgiving week (unlike everything else), so we are tempted. Is it any good? Is there a negative reason it has availability?

My family and I went last month and we really were looking forward to it and wanted to like it but it just fell flat for us. Our serve was great and his dry humor was spot on. He was so great that if you weren't paying close attention, some of his delivery would have been lost. The server was the highlight of the meal.

The falafel had an off consistency and were bland. They were extremely creamy, almost a hummus texture, which I am not used to in falafel (but not in a good way like the Spice Road Table hummus fries). The cachapas could have been great but the pork was so salty that it was inedible (my husband couldn't even eat it and he LOVES salt). The only winning dish was the lot at steak salad but it had very little meat. I was really hoping this might be a new go-to in the Magic Kingdom because the menu looks fabulous but we won't be going back anytime soon.

I went last September for my 1st Solo Trip and I can say it was one of my favorite meals of my whole trip. I had the whole fish which was cooked to perfection. I believe it was a snapper at that time. I also had the Shu mai as an appetizer very good and the Coconut bar for Dessert which was great those little Meringues I could have used some more of on the plate lol. I highly recommend it.

Love to see your insta food pics

Count me in too! You should create your own thread and upload your photos and give a brief description of your food choices. That would be so helpful! People can chime in as well but as the host you can add and delete images no longer relevant to the establishment.

You can follow me @thatssomika everywhere

That's a cool idea they have a food thread I do follow on here.

We ate there last week and loved it. The only clunker was the chicken noodle soup from the kids menu. My son couldn’t eat it, it was so salty. My daughter ate a few of the noodles without the broth, but otherwise, it wasn’t touched. My oldest had the fried chicken and it was excellent. I had the falafel, which I enjoyed, and the cachapas, which were also good. My husband had the lamb chops, and he thought they were great. I’m hoping it sticks around so we can eat there in two years when we go back.

The food is some of the highest quality in MK, I know that's not saying much but it's probably the only place in MK we're excited to eat at. The whole fried fish is excellent, albeit intimidating for some, cachapas are excellent. The desserts are fantastic as well. Both the Coconut Lime Bar and the Kungaloosh.

Server luck has been 3/3 with great servers, only 2 of which are still there, one moved to 1900 PF.

It's now how we start every trip to WDW.
My sister and I are trying this in October and I will probably get the whole fish. I like to try different things.

I really liked it! I enjoyed my entree (char siu pork), but I wish I had gotten two appetizers. The one appetizer I got - the cachapas. Absolutely heavenly, probably the best food I had on that trip. I wish I had tried the SEA Shu Mai.

Love that hot and sour soup. I have read many people who thought the food was to spicy. I guess my taste must run to heavily on the spicy side because I just thought the food was good. Its already on my list for our next trip.

We've eaten there on both of our recent trips (May 2017 and May 2018) and really enjoyed it! I liked that they offer unique food that actually has flavor (not necessarily spicy). We also ate in the large Mess Hall both times and I actually felt very relaxed. We had good service and we enjoyed the silly jokes!

I love Skipper Canteen, I go there every trip. The 'tastes like chicken because it is' is wonderful and I like quite a few of their appetizers. I'm gluten free and they've always been friendly and accommodating. I always hear people saying the food is adventurous, I suppose that depends on the kind of eater you are. I didn't find it adventurous, but I'm from Vancouver and we have many restaurants with Asian and East Indian influences, so maybe I'm just more accustomed. If you are more of an always steak and potatoes eater, it might be adventurous for you, but I think it's worth a visit. :-)

Does anyone know if a group of ten can fit in the “smaller” rooms? Have never been there so not sure how big/small the rooms are and if it’s worth requesting for a party that large.
