Skipper Canteen "push"

If I don't see it when I'm making my PS reservations, & it's not somewhere I've been before, then I wouldn't even think about it. I happened to see this thread, and thought, oh yes, Skipper Canteen, let me make a reservation for that for our upcoming trip. Why on earth would they not take reservations? Many people probably don't even know about it, or think about it, like me! I mean, I knew about it, but it wasn't on my mind when I was thinking about where I'd like to eat next trip.

My twin 5 year olds and I ate there last Friday. I purposely left a hole in our schedule if we wanted to try it. (I've also discovered that you can get LOTS of ADRs same day or the night before so I've given up on the ADR 180 game...now if I was with a big group and we HAD to eat at a place like Ohana's, well, that's a horse of a different color.) We spent a slightly miserable weather wise morning in the MK and were caught in some huge downpours, so we were wet and a little cold. We arrived a little after 11, and we were seated right away. No one was outside trying to draw people in. We were seated in the mess hall, and I had my reservations about this. I fall into the not a fan of BOG category mainly because the main ballroom reminds me of a school cafeteria and the noise is unpleasant. When eating a nice meal, I want to focus on the conversation and the food. The mess hall was much, much smaller and quieter. However, only half the tables were filled. We did see the other rooms on our own. No one offered us a tour.

Highlights: WOW! This place is gorgeous. And so themey! That is why I eat at Disney. I don't go to Sci-Fi for the incredible burgers (actually, I don't think I've ever gotten a burger there)...maybe I go for the milkshakes! I don't go to HDDR for it's fried chicken and strawberry shortcake. I can get that food and better quality for less at other places; I go because these places are fun and unique and part of the magic. My 5DS said, "Wow! This bathroom's got some nice decorating!" Even though there are great pics on lots of blogs, they do not do the place justice. It is truly Disney.

Our server was sweet and very energetic.

We got the kungaloosh for dessert. Here, my sugar loving monkeys rejoined me. It was quite delicious. People have complained about the size, and while small I think it is more that the price is not in line with the size. That ice cream is fantastic. I had them leave off the coffee dust, and they were happy to oblige.

Unfortunately, that is the end of the highlights.

Not so great things:
*No jokes or antics from our server. Oh, well.
*Could not get them to take my TiW card. I knew it wouldn't work, but I asked any way. I was told by our server, "We don't have that button on our computer." Seriously?
*The food. Ugggh. The bread is...interesting. It was warm and soft with a slight crust. Taste was almost bitter. My 5 DD bread lover took one bite and didn't want any more. My 5 DS who would eat honey straight out of the bottle if I let him didn't like that things were floating in the honey and refused to try it. One bite would be interesting and then I'd take another and it would be painfully sweet. Then another bite would be shockingly bitter.
I ordered the kids arepas and the app arepas. Wish I had only ordered the app...wait, wish I had ordered something else entirely. I hoped my kids would eat it. Nope, turned their noses up at it. (I should say that they were cold and I let them get hot chocolates and that was all they were thinking about. They eat well at home...broccoli, almost every fruit under the sun, lots of protein...but at Disney, it's all about Mickey bars and fries.) The two are basically the same, except they make little sandwiches out of the kids' ones and the kids' version has the yuca fries which were absolutely perfect. I like food like this....well, in theory, I do. The beef was overcooked to mushiness...had the same texture as the beans, both unappealing. The meat was, as Disney does best, oversalted. The arepas and the queso fresco, interestingly, neither were salted effectively. The queso fresco could have definitely benefited from a sprinkle. When you made a little sandwich, the salt did balance out. I had maybe six pieces of diced tomato and ONE leaf of cilantro. Not a sprig. One leaf. Basically the dish fell flat. It could have really benefited from a wedge of lime to brighten it up.
I should have ordered something else, but I can't do red peppers or jalapenos, am opposed to paying over $20 for a bowl of noodles, I don't order steak out as I have half a grass fed cow in my freezer and am pretty adept at cooking a mean steak. the next possibility was the lamb, but I really thought I would like the arepas.

So I have been thinking about this restaurant, like many of you, since we heard the rumors way last spring. I was so excited to try it. And like many things you build up in your mind, it could not live up. It has such GREAT potential. However, it needs some rethinking and reorganization.

How to Improve SC:
*(Hate if you must) Put the obnoxious yellow mickey mac and cheese on the kids menu. That stuff is crack and more families would come in knowing their kiddos will have one thing to eat.
*Put a chicken curry on the menu.
*Change the bread and honey service to hummus and pitas. If for some reason, the powers that be think that pastitsio fits into the Jungle Cruise, then pitas aren't a far stretch.
*Add a Pad Thai. How many times do you go to a thai restaurant and at least one person in your group gets the pad thai? Safe, easy to do right (or at least approaching right), and cost effective.
*Drop each menu item by at least $2-5. (I do know it's Disney. But $20 for a bowl of broth and noodles?)
*Up the antics. Like I said earlier, we go for the magic. The food is secondary. My 12 DD can't tell you what she ate at 50'sPTC, but she'll giggle all through retelling the story of how our waiter poked her grandpa with 10 straws all connected together. My 5 year olds watch with anticipation for their favorite clip at Sci Fi. I hope I never forget as long as I live how my oldest daughter (then 6) who was struggling greatly with learning issues laughed till tears rolled down her face at the HDDR, like a kid who didn't have a care in the world. Disney, this is the magic. Make SC fun! Make it crazy. Make it like the old days before everyone read about the Ketchup thing at WCC on the boards and then demanded it twice a meal. Make it spontaneous.
*Find the button on the computer for the TiW discount. (Mine is finished and I didn't renew due to the price increase, but this is for all the other TiW holders out there.)

I am on the fence about the whole ADR thing. It was so nice NOT to rush or worry are we going to make it? However, it is really counterintuitive to preach 180 and charge a $10 no show (which is truly necessary) and then scratch your head and wonder why it's not filling up.

ohh, that was long...

I'm finding all the bad reviews so depressing. I've been really looking forward to this restaurant because the potential is incredible. I love the Jungle Cruise, so I really want to love this restaurant too. I will definitely still try it and I will go in with an open mind, as I do with any restaurant good or bad reviews. I'm really hoping that they make some changes in the next few months to address some of the common negative feedback and that it's a much improved experience by the end of summer when I'm there.

I am feeling the same way. We had left a spot open for our upcoming March trip, but I just booked Kona instead. We'll likely give Skippers a try in Sept when we're back without the kids. The food sounds interesting, but I just can't get excited when it seems like they have a LOT of kinks to resolve.

1) Simple.
2) WDW cares about selling, not pleasing.
3) EXAMPLE:
. . . I was in "Concierge" training class at Disney University (behind Magic Kingdom)
. . . we were taught how to sell tickets
. . . we were shown how to make a ADR
. . . the instructor told us to recommend our favorite eatery when making ADR's
. . . one girl said she had NEVER eaten at a WDW sit-down eatery, so which should she recommend?
. . . the instructor told her to just pick one with an opening and say THAT was her favorite
4) The rest of us in the class looked at each other and shook out heads.
. . . this was just plain deceitful in order to sell a meal
. . . it did not matter to the instructor what we told guests
. . . our job was to sell tickets, repeat SELL TICKETS, not to be a True Concierge (like at other hotel chains) *
5) This might give you an idea how a SERVER at Canteen could get away without riding Jungle Cruise

* This is also why WDW changed the term of Concierge Floor to Club Floor at deluxe resorts. Guests were complaining that we were not Concierge, as we couldn't/wouldn't help with reservations and such for off-property activities and meals. Some of us did violate that rule. (With over 4½-million air-miles, I have had good and bad Concierge service at hotels, and would not let myself short-change a guest by limiting my services to the WDW property or activities.)

Thanks for your reply. I don't question that Disney operates just like every other large corporation, that's the way the biz world operates. I'd like to think that if I were manager of a place like this (not that I'm qualified) I'd make an attempt to rally the cast and try to get them to behave in the spirit of the theme. If nothing else, it could make the job of being a server more interesting, and make the time go by a little faster. I guess if I ever dine there I'll bring my own pith helmet. ;)

Finally looked at the menu ..
I am sure the "exotic" menu and the prices ($20+ for entrees .. ugh) are keeping people away as well.

Be Our Guest, is somewhat "exotic", but a draw because of the wonderful theming (and because it's lunch is quick service and much cheaper than dinner).

I am not sure if a Jungle Cruise Theme is a big enough draw for the price. I think it would be fun as a Disney fan to go there with just my wife (or other adults), but, let's face it . it is no Beast's Castle or Cinderella's Castle for the kids.

I would think there would be a bigger draw if this restaurant actually had an overlook INTO the actual Jungle Cruise .. its location feels too far removed from the Jungle Cruise entrance to fit into that them.

Good point! When you think about it, the physical Jungle Cruise ride is pretty pedestrian, it's the skippers & the jokes that make it enjoyable. Some of that charm is probably lost on smaller children who maybe just got off Splash Mountain and are wondering what the heck this is supposed to be. And there's yet another reason in favor of having alcohol on the menu.

Your idea about the restaurant having a view of the attraction is outstanding! When are the suits at Disney going to realize they need to put us in charge?:earboy2:

This is quite eye opening. I had actually never thought of it in those terms. We always stay club level and have been for over 13 years. We fly in and use Disney transportation and stay on property the entire trip so we never had need to inquire about anything off property. I had no idea Disney club level only helps with onsite inquiries. To think that we would be told at a NYC hotel that they only recommended their own restaurants is absurd! We travel often and utilize concierge services regularly. For any hotel concierge to operate that way is to negate the entire purpose, really.

In the spirit of "the cheese stands alone," I had not one, but two very enjoyable meals at Skipper Canteen last week.

It's true - the restaurant was pretty empty; rather stunning when MK was practically exploding with people. (MLK Day long weekend.) Our wait to be seated both times was under five minutes!!

For appetizers, we share the shumai and the falafel and both were delicious. I had the char siu pork with multi-grain rice and my brother had the pho noodle bowl with chicken. I loved the pork and found it to be very flavorful and super tender. However, the base of the sauce/marinade for the pork is Chinese five spice which has a very distinct flavor I can see people not particularly liking. My brother really liked his pho and enjoyed all the fresh herbs it's topped with. Our food that first time did take quite a while and it was explained to me that everything is made to order, so it can take a bit longer to get to the table.

The second time, we share the same two apps but also got the arepas which were delicious. I tried the "Tastes Like Chicken" and loved it - the meat was very well cooked (still juicy and tender) which can be difficult with chicken breasts. The accompanying fried rice and stir-fried veggies were a nice compliment to the chicken. My brother had the pork and, once again, it was delicious and tender. Service was a little bit faster the second time, FYI.

Overall, I will definitely go back; I enjoyed the food, atmosphere and service. My one complaint? The bathrooms only have two stalls!!! :)

*Find the button on the computer for the TiW discount. (Mine is finished and I didn't renew due to the price increase, but this is for all the other TiW holders out there.)
QUOTE]
You can't "find" what isn't there. When a guest presents a TIW card, the server has to hit the TIW button on the computer and is then prompted to swipe the card. It automatically discounts the meal and adds the grat. Restaurants that don't participate in TIW don't have a TIW button option on their screen. Not a servers fault at all

But there apparently was a "button" the first few days they were open as people have reported being able to use TIW during that time.

I wonder if some guest think this is going to be like Trader Sam's? I had a friend who thought the menu was not appealing so she didn't go

Yeah, I took a look at the menu and just thought it looked lackluster. Also, my son is really picky so he wouldn't really want to eat anything there. If something changes between now and November I may try it but otherwise I'll pass.

With all due respect, if you don't at least try it one time..............making a decision based on what you see seems unfair o_O(that's me). You can get a crap meal anywhere even when the photo looks enticing. Price.........is an issue for you..........at WDW? We actually thought it was reasonable.........given what we pay for some restaurants in the MK:sad:

Ahhh the beauty is eveyone can make their own choice.....................right! I just think until you try it you're never gonna really know (at least that's what my wife said about having sushi at Cali Grill...........which I didn't like):-)

Doug :goofy:

Doug,
It doesn't take, a trained Chef to interpret Macaroni, Spiced Meat and Bechamel, it screams Hamburger Helper. Granted,it may be exceptional Hamburger Helper, but I don't travel half way across the country to waste my time and my money for this type of offering. What I am trying to say, and evidently not very well is: with the talent of the many WDW chefs, surely they could do better. We may just have to agree to disagree.

Yeah we can do that................ :)

Have a great visit when you do get down there!

I agree with your suggestions. I haven't had the chance to eat here yet (not open when I was in the MK late Oct/early Nov) but as a 40-something adult with adventurous tastes, even I struggle a bit with the menu. A pad thai would be incredible. Butter chicken a la Sanaa would be wonderful. And if I had my young 10 yr old niece in tow, we likely wouldn't even go in because w/o mac & cheese or chicken nuggets, she'd go hungry and be bored. So much potential in this restaurant but off the mark with both the menu & no ADRs. The servers also really have to bring it because as hard-working and personable as they may be, a Jungle Cruise-themed restaurant is sold with the lure of some Jungle Cruise antics. It needs to be there or the experience falls flat. Thank you for your honest review!

It is beginning to sound like heaven to me. I don't make ADRs, I'm on vacation not boot camp so I'm lazy. I rarely make FPs either, see lazy. I like the idea of a walk up. While some of the reviews of the food are a bit discouraging, most everyone will tell you Sanaa is the bees knees, my family and I (grown son and DIL who love to eat exotic different foods) did not like it. Our service was horrible, I'm talking there were tables that turned over twice while we were waiting for food. My food was o.k., nothing to write home about, my son sent his back - I've never in his entire 35 years seen the boy send anything back. My DIL picked around hers, she had the butter chicken which they used to get at a local dive in Chicago and love. So, the food might just suit us, the appetizer shown on the Allears review looked good so I could just go for that and dessert. The fact that the servings are small is a plus for me, I never eat everything and usually end up leaving half on my plate. We don't like BOG, it's loud and expensive and the food not so good so if it's not BOG, we are good. As far as how WDW would let a place that didn't serve good food stay, need I even say Tony's to anyone? The place has received bad reviews across the board, we used to have to eat there when it first opened, we loved it. Now you couldn't pay us to go there and what a prime piece of real estate that is on. We'll give it a chance, after all you don't know if you'll like it til you try it.

Here was our experience. We are not early diners but wanted to try to work it in inbetween FP's between 6:30-7:00ish. While I'm not a fan of having to make ADR's in general - NOT TAKING ADR's MAKES THIS DIFFICULT. I can't figure out why Disney is pushing the whole "plan every minute of your trip with FP's and ADR's" and then they don't offer a way to do it with this restaurant. ANYWAY, we crossed the park around 5:15 to see if there was a wait. There was not. BUT we didn't want to eat that early. It was a pain to have to cross the park just to check tho.
.

Yes, this! This was part of our experience as well. We were there on Dec. 29 - a super busy day - and were trying to fit this in between BTMRR and 7DMT FP+ which I had deliberately scheduled 2 hours apart in the hopes that I would get a SC ADR when it opened. Well, of course, no ADR's to be had. STILL, I wanted to try to eat here while we were still in the Frontierland/Adventureland area so as not to drag DS8 to Fantasyland for 7DMT and then back to Adventureland for lunch. Did I mention how crowded it was?! Well, with no ADR's there is no way to guarantee you aren't going to be crisscrossing OR twiddling your thumbs waiting in Adventureland/Frontierland while waiting for your table. The only way I saw to be able to avoid this was to check-in at 10:30 am to ensure a table when they opened at 11 am - not really our ideal time to eat, but it did avoid the criss-cross. We were then stuck in Adventureland for 30 minutes with nothing to do. All the standby lines were too long to ride anything, so we went to the shooting gallery and poked in some shops. This really isn't how I want to spend my time in WDW. And this is why people book ADR's OR simply choose QS - you can actually control WHEN you are going to eat based on all of the other things you've planned for the day. Anyway, the whole experience was super lackluster for us. Unless they improve the food, allow ADR's and/or plus the theming somehow (characters, more antics), we won't be back.
