Skipper Canteen or Tony's Townsquare

I am looking for one table service at Magic Kingdom, for lunch, and have these two in mind. Kiddo will be 12 but is very picky (ie he likes things plain). While he loves steak, and would probably want that, when I look at the menus the adult choice is way too fancy for him (he very much likes his meat barely seasoned and with plain sides, nothing fancy).

Normally we do buffets but since they are all family style now, and with more limited options, I don't think it's the best deal for us. We will probably be doing counter service for 90% of our meals, with this plus a lunch in Hollywood Studios at the 50's Diner or Sci Fi place.

I’ve honestly read nothing but bad reviews for Tony’s townsquare restaurant. I’d take a look at the kids menu at skipper canteen and see if any of those options appeal to your son. They may upcharge you but I bet they would allow him to order off the kids menu due to preference. We are at liberty tree tavern on our last trip which is served family style. Things like thanksgiving dinner, for my 1 and 3 year old it was heaven! This was probably the only meal where they both ate a ton and we didn’t end up wasting a bunch.

We haven't gone yet, but choosing between those two, we chose Skippers. There are other pizza/pasta places we will go at WDW. I asked about my teens ordering off the kid's menu and many responded that it most likely would be fine. The Tony's reviews were pretty mediocre. LTT didn't appeal to us (menu or theming), but the reviews are pretty good.

We have always had good food and service at Tony’s. I would give it a try and form your own opinion.

You shouldn’t have any problem ordering off the children’s menu for him at any restaurant therefore Skippers sound like it could fit your needs.

Tony’s isn’t on my radar so I’ve never eaten there and have nothing to say about it.

I know it’s not ideal for some, but I’d take a couple hr break from MK and try something on the monorail loop or WL. IMO, there are no TS restaurants worth my time or money in MK.
MK is a captive audience so it is what it is.

I would do Skipper. As PP noted, they can make something plain for your child. Not only is the food better, IMHO, but the location is as well. Unless you are just entering or exiting MK, Tony's is inconveniently located.

One positive for Tony’s if they continue the cavalcades is the sunroom or porch are great locations to watch them go by. We saw three during our lunch. The food was fine.

I much prefer Skipper's Canteen. They have a nice kids mac and cheese that they can give him as an adult portion if you want. I've done that before on a day I was craving a mac and cheese. LOL

The consistently bad reviews have kept us from trying Tony's, but we love Skipper Canteen. It's a must do for us on a MK day. The food is great, the servers are a hoot, and we love the atmosphere. As others have mentioned your son can order off of the kid's menu. They might give him a larger portion and upcharge you, but he should be able to get something he likes. I've also heard people say that you can ask for the Tastes Like Chicken with the sauce on the side. If that's the case, you're basically just getting fried chicken.

Went to Tony's about two weeks ago. Food was good, service was good, no problems, would recommend and would happily go again. Been to Skipper Canteen as well, and had a good experience there too. If I were to recommend one or the other to a "picky" eater, however, I would easily recommend Tony's, as the Skipper Canteen fare seems to be a little more adventurous.
