If you want to find a ski vacation that really works for you I would seriously suggest doing the same kind of legwork you should do for a Disney vacation when you don't have a clue...
Go out to google and start plugging in your requirements. If you have a long enough window (like vacation 2007) try looking for ski shows or for ski clubs. This website is great and all but not the best source for finding a ski vacation that is affordable.
For southeasterners there is a ski council down here. I didn't look into skiing this year but I did last year to figure out the best bet for me and in hopes of finding a club with a lodge (no luck).
Oh...for the person looking to avoid driving...I think Park City has a selection of mountains nearby and if you are staying in the city there is some availability of hotel transfers. Again...gotta do that research.
