Thinking of traveling and camping at Skidaway State Park, GA for a few days... anyone ever been there? :confused3

We are leaving on a Sunday morning from PA, traveling south for a few days, then to St Augustine where we will be staying at North Beach campground for a few days, then onward to the Fort for a week. :cool1:

so the whole "traveling south" section of our trip is undecided... and we found Skidaway... our plan during the day time is to explore Savannah.

Any thoughts?

Who am I kidding, I know the Camping board has lots of thoughts.... :rotfl2:

Nice campground. Pretty big sites. It is a good bit off of I95. We have stayed there a few times and actually have ressies for this summer there. Lots to do in the area. It has been a while but I seem to remember the comfort stations were pretty clean (definitely not FW but fine).

If you are into marine/science, etc there is a neat little aquarium and hiking trail pretty close by.

Very nice rustic campground. Lots of trees. You pick out your own campsite after arrival. I suggest not arriving late in the day to avoid getting the least desirable sites. Comfort stations were OK. I used the coin laundry while there. 1/2 the price of Disney. Do go downtown Savannah and I also recommend a trip to Fort Pulaski(sp?)

We've never been to Skidaway, but we love North Beach Camp Resort at St. Augustine. We almost always spend a few nights there on our way to "The Fort".

We leave about 9:00 a.m. and it puts us at FW for an early check-in.

We will be arriving on Sunday or Monday.... the thinking is that it should be "cleared out" of the weekenders and we shouldn't have problem camping there mid-week.

I am sure we will be hitting any hiking trails, and the aquarium sounds fun too. Thanks for the suggestions!

We don't really use the comfort stations. Not sure we will have much laundry accumulated by then in the trip, will probably do laundry while in St Aug.

Thanks for the tip about the fort. We will definately look that up!

We stayed at North Beach last summer and LOVED being about to walk across the street to the ocean!

We have visited St Aug many times, and have stayed in Anastatia State park too, along with the KOA.

Anastatia is very nice, but a tight fit with our camper, and it is very hard to get reservations unless you book at the 11 month window.

The KOA was nice too, but definately packed in there, but we were there over easter both times we went...

I do a continuing ed class every 6 months at Skidaway. I've never stayed there but I have gone in the campground and used the comfort station. It's very shady and there looks to be a lot of things to do. DO NOT arrive during the morning or evening traffic times. 204 is a mess during that time.

:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2: When I first read your comment "It's very shady....."
My mind was NOT thinking shade trees.... I think I need more coffee.

Thanks for the reminder about Rush Hour traffic! I don't think we will arrive until about lunch time on Monday....

I think we will do a stop-over at South of the Border:eek: for the night on Sunday. :scared1:

Every review on line seems to be OK with the campground portion, the rest of the joint freaks me out. :scared1: I am more freaked out at this place than I am at any other place on the east coast. SOB is Shady... IMO of course.

We have friends who have stayed there before and swear it is OK too.... so we shall see, I am game for most anything ONCE... so I will give it a try... But could you please say a prayer for me?

Our second trip in our RV was at Skidaway. We really liked it a lot. The comfort stations were definitely not as nice as FW, but it was still nice. We really enjoyed Savannah too.

Dog,

We stayed at Skidway before. It is about 20-30 minutes off the Interstate. We were there in March and toured Savanah during the day - it's very convenient for that. The bugs were just starting to come out in March so I don't know when you plan to do this but the Savanah area can be humid and buggy. The campground is almost completely shaded/treed but I don't know how much of a breeze you might get.

For a base to visit the city it does that well. As a campground per se I was underwhelmed.
