Thank you Mr Adams, Mr Jefferson, Mr Franklin and the Continental Congress of the U.S. for your insights and sacrifices in securing our independence and freedom.

I love that movie one of my all time favorites!

Vote yes. Vote yes. Vote for indepenancy!
:thumbsup2

Here a Lee, there a Lee, everywhere a Lee, a Lee!

That movie came out when I was in high school -- our choir performed the songs from the movie at a concert for the bicentennial.

I picked up a DVD copy last year with a gift card my MIL gave me and now it is my 13 year old DS's favorite movie. I think he's probably watched it a couple of times a month since I bought it. He wanted his middle school chorus to perform 1776 for their musical, but I explained that there weren't enough parts for everyone (it's a no cut musical, so they have up to 130 participants). He also wanted to take it in to school when they were studying the Revoluntionary War. I went on line to check it out to make sure there weren't too many historical inaccuracies, and there were a few, but nothing too bad.

I dusted off my own DVD copy and am watching it now. Blythe Danner just came on -- otherwise known as "Gwyneth Paltrow's mother." She was gorgeous. Gwyneth looks so much like her.

I just found a YouTube link:

I love her dress, especially when she twirls.

I usually spend some time on July 4 looking for this movie on tv. :lmao: Yep, it was on yesterday and poor DH came in, saw what was on and said, "Oh, for pete's sake, it's that time of year, isn't it?" I just love that movie. A perfect movie double header for Independence Day is 1776 and Yankee Doodle Dandy.

love the musical! didnt know it was a movie!!!!

I see you live in NYC.
You should check out www.playsinthepark.com in New brunswick, NJ. They just had a 10 day run of 1776 that ended this past weekend.

They put on 3 shows a summer. 6.00 an adult, kids under 12 are free & do a FANTASTIC job.

My very cool high school history teacher took our American History class to see the movie the year it came out. Two years later my father played a part in our local little theater production. I STILL know all the words to all the songs. :rotfl2: I love the movie too.

Oh how funny - I checked out your link and it turns out I went to high school with John Hancock and Edward Rutledge. Plays in the Park is a real institution in Central NJ. I'm glad to see it is still around with so many cuts in arts program funding.

A musical with perhaps the most powerful ending on any musical - and it does it without a song or a dance - just the silent scratching of a pen and a bell.

I directed a college production a couple of years ago and what a great experience it was - the amount of research and detail that was included is really wonderful - most of the letters are exact quotes.

I look for it every year, too. But for the last couple years, I couldn't find it. You'd think with all the cable channels, it would be showing somewhere locally. :confused3 I finally broke down & got the DVD. :thumbsup2

That sounds like fun. :dance3:

On my birthday several years ago, I saw it on Broadway with Brent Spiner, who played Data, the android, on Star trek: TNG. He was good, but unfortunately, he only played John Adams as obnoxious and disliked.

William Daniels, in the movie, also knew how to add in charm and sensitivity to his portrayal, especially with Abigail. So we were routing for him to win Independency, and not just for all of us.

You went to high school with John Hancock and Edward Rutledge? How old are you?

I get all misty-eyed when the vote finally comes in and John Adams quietly says, "Done." Also when they are signing the Declaration. :sad1: I'm so proud to be a U.S. citizen and what it took for our forefathers to secure what our country is today. :goodvibes

Let's just say there is a picture of a really OLD woman hanging in my living room that seems to keep getting older every year. :lmao:

And now I will clarify that I went to high school with Jack and Todd, the actors portraying Hancock and Rutledge. IIRC, Jack played Tommy's drunken pal in "Brigadoon" when he was a junior back in 1987, and Todd was Professor Henry Higgins in "My Fair Lady" as a senior back in 1985. As for me, I trilled along on my flute in the pit for both of those shows.

Darn!!! I usually try and watch it every year, too, but forgot to check for it this year. One of my favorites as well.

Oh, it's one of my favorites, too. I watched it yesterday. Always part of my personal Independence Day traditions.

John Adams - "This is a revolution, dammit! We're going to have to offend SOMEone!"

Yes, he's really good as John Adams. I still think of him as Mr. Feeney.

Love this show and movie. William Daniels rocks as John Adams!

I don't think I've ever seen the movie - but I saw the play in London. Now that was a little odd.:):)

I took my parents to London over 4th of July about 15 years ago. I couldn't believe all the references to the 4th (special menus even at my office in London) - I guess it was all for the American tourists. But it just seemed strange to be "celebrating" the 4th of July in London.
