Just received a wonderful email! My sister just reported a phone call from her hubby! He is a Major in the Air Force and left for Turkey the beginning of March. As we know our birds didn't actually make it to Turkey.

She had a quick call and short email last week which led us to guess that they had been hanging out in England at an RAF base. But they were "on the move again".

Today's call said he is well and safe. They are flying and sleeping - eating on occasion. Tight quarters - 8 men to a tiny room in 4 bunks. He is waiting for his clothes to "catch up with him" so asked her to send some things. No hints even on where he is. But did say no email access and would only have one 5 minute call a month so we're guessing a pretty primitive base. Maybe even a quickly "constructed" one.

We did get an address and just knowing he is ok was so good to hear!

Had to share a moment,
Deb

I am so happy for her, I know it makes such a difference.

Thanks Melanie. I just noticed your "tag". DH and I were just talking about the Thunderbolts last night. Living near an airport along the Lake Michigan shoreline we're used to see training flights from regional bases overhead. He was mentioning as we were watching a news report about their use in Iraq how some folks wanted to do away with them awhile ago. Sounds like it was a good thing they didn't!

Hope your loved ones and friends are all safe!

I am sure that made her day. Thank you for sharing it :)

I know she was relieved to hear her husband's voice. I'm glad he is alright.

Your ds must have been so excited to hear from her dh. :) Hopefully they'll get the infrastructure up better wherever he is and he'll get more than one 5 min phone call per month soon.

Keli,

I agree that would be so wonderful if that happened. After receiving the email and sharing here, I put everything else on my desk aside and wrote him a letter. It seemed so strange to print it off and seal it in an envelope. He was deployed during Desert Storm also and we had some email contact. He has been rotating in and out of Incirlik every couple of months since 9/11 and the contact has basically been daily. So this seems so weird.

But the main thing is that he is safe. So I'll focus on that and mail the letter in the morning mail.

That's wonderful news! Hugs for your sister and I hope she hears from him again soon. :)

Good news, Deb, glad to hear she heard from him, those calls are so important. Nice.

I'm not sure HOW he managed this because he told her he didn't have email access but somehow he managed to get a quick message out to his "list". They were cleared to tell that they "have moved to a Royal Air Force Base in the Mediterranean Region". That was all he could say, no clearance for what they are doing.

But that isn't too hard to figure out - he flies on AWACs....

He also sent us a quick list of their most desired and hard to come by items. Top of his list was Laundry soap! And this is the guy who didn't have any clothes yet!

So to our British friends out there - THANK YOU for helping our guys do what they need to do!

Deb
