Sistah Twistah - A January Dining Review- Updated- 6/25 - COMPLETE!!!

I'm finally back! It's time for...

Biergarten!

So here we are, still in Epcot, finishing up our meal at Les Halles and killing time until our 1:50 pm ADR at Biergarten.
We knew we had another Epcot day so we weren't rushing to go through every single pavilion in the World Showcase. Our goal was one: Food.
After feeling we had killed enough time and even though we were still early, we walked over to Germany to find our lunch. It took me a few minutes to find the entrance. Not sure why
We arrived about 20 minutes early but were seated almost right away. I was initially worried about the communal seating because I sometimes have a hard time striking up a conversation with strangers and even more of a hard time not striking up a conversation but feeling awkward like maybe I should be..? But mostly I was worried it would be too crowded for me to feel comfortable getting up to the buffet and back. Like maybe the tables and chairs were too squished together and we would be seated on the far end, having to get everyone out of their seats any time we wanted a refill.. (Ah, the wonderful state of mind that comes with growing up fat.)
I even posted my concerns here on the DIS a while before our trip but got some reassuring answers. I believe most people said it was no problem and there was room between tables but I also got a great tip saying I should ask to be seated at the outer edge of the table- even if that means waiting a little longer for our reservation. And that I did.

We ended up sitting with three friendly, talkative couples- two were friends travelling together and one other couple besides us. And everyone wanted to be seated at the end. :worried:
One woman was using a cane and our table was actually down some stairs, right by the performance area. Needless to say they were kind of pissed because the stairs were hard for her. I think they were hoping to be moved but they ended up staying. There was some discussion of who would sit at the edge and I was a little nervous we would be placed in the middle even though we made sure to ask before we were seated.
I don't remember how this happened exactly (uh oh- I'm already starting to forget stuff) but my sister and I ended up sitting next to each other at the outer end of the table. Yes! There was actually quite a lot of room and no one had any trouble getting up or sitting back down.

After we were seated our server took our drink orders and sent us up to the buffet.

I ordered a coke- my usual drink and I believe Shira had a Sprite. I loved the beer mugs they used!!

7 Biergarten (3).jpg

In general our mugs were almost never empty. We ordered lots of refills and got them fairly quickly.

Before moving on to the food, I'll just say that we stayed long enough to see the show twice! (Actually we didn't stay that long, but I guess the show runs pretty often.)

7 Biergarten (1).jpg

Shira was wearing her birthday button (I can't for the life of me remember if I mentioned this already so I'll write it again, just in case)- My birthday was in November and hers is in March (coming up actually! The 22nd!) so we both asked for birthday buttons since we were right smack in the middle of them and it's fun to celebrate any time of the year. I took mine off pretty quickly but Shira had hers on almost the entire trip.
I mention this because her birthday was noted and during one of the shows, the guy on stage wished her a happy birthday and sang for her! Pretty cool.

Anyway... on to the food.
The buffet was plentiful but very dark. I know that's part of the ambiance and I loved the restaurant theme, but when choosing food, I need light.

My first plate:

7 Biergarten (2).jpg

Lucky I wrote this down because I never would have remembered what anything is.
So, starting with the bowl- This is the famous cold beer cheese soup which was very thick and floury with a strong taste which I didn't really care for. Clockwise from there: Pickled cucumbers, a cucumber salad, meatball, sausage, potato salad, a tiny ball of butter (because butter), macaroni salad (because pasta) and sausage salad. Unfortunately they were all kind of meh. Maybe it's because I prefer hot food or maybe the flavors didn't really do it for me. Either way, I ate very little- really just tried a bit of everything and that was it. I'm also not a big fan of mayonnaise. (Blasphemy!)

Second plate, this time from the hot selection:

7 Biergarten (4).jpg

We'll start at the top and go clockwise again-
Pretzel roll, regular roll (cause you gotta try both, y'know?), mac and cheese, spatzle (what is this??), red cabbage, potatoes, pork schnitzel, 2 types of sausages with sauerkraut, mustard and meatballs in some sauce.

Verdict: Mac and cheese!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yummmm!!!!!! That was definitely the best thing I had at Biergarten. I actually got seconds!! I probably should have just gotten a plate of it and called it a day.
Everything else was again kind of meh, I'm so so sorry to say.
The main reason I chose Biergarten beside it being a buffet (unlimited choices!) is because I love all types of hot dogs and I thought the sausages would be.. you know... similar? Just plain good?
They really disappointed. I'm not sure what it was about them- maybe the seasoning- but I didn't have more than a few bites. "A few" instead of just one because there are steps to follow before you can accept a disappointment like that.
Bite 1- "Yum! Oh, wait. Not that yum. What is that flavor/texture/smell?"
Bite 2- "No way- it was probably just a bad piece. The next'll be better."
Bite 3- "Noooo!!! It can't be!! It has to be good!!! How will I go on??"
*Two courses later*
Bite 4- "Nope, still not good." *sigh*

The schnitzel was too thin and a little hard. The spatzle reminded me of Passover food (why would we do that to ourselves more than once a year??) The cabbage was pretty good and the rest was really just ok.
Still, there was a lot more to choose from and I'm sure anyone can find something they like there.

Third plate is desserts:

7 Biergarten (5).jpg

The cookie on top was very soft and good. Plain but sometimes that's all you need. Clockwise- the cheesecake was pretty good, the black forest was ok- I'm not really a berry person, the apple strudel was good and the vanilla sauce was excellent. The pineapple I didn't try- I'm not even sure what it's doing on my plate- Shira might have gotten it for me. And the thing-in-the-cup is some sort of strawberry vanilla something rather but I didn't even care to write what I thought of it, so- probably meh.

All in all- the interior of the restaurant is beautiful- really blew us away (I was sure I had a picture somewhere..) And even though my review was mostly meh- I'd go back there.
I'd be prepared to try new stuff and even if I didn't like anything, there's always mac and cheese ::yes:: ;) :D
And vanilla sauce for dessert!!!!

Next up- Shira almost has a breakdown and we end up at Nine Dragons!
(Yes! Two TS restaurants in one day!)

:rainbow:

I am so with you on the food at Biergarten. Just a whole lotta meh. I have had delicious German food before, just not at Biergarten. I very much love a good spätzle (it's an egg pasta that is constructed similarly to gnocchi, but gnocchi is generally potato-based), but was bummed out by the one they had. However, atmosphere and alcohol helped my overall enjoyment. We are going again because my SIL and husband LOVE it, but they are of German descent and love the atmosphere - and the alcohol. That's the night we discovered the Schöfferhofer grapefruit hefeweizen, which is only 2.5% alcohol and became our summer beer for ever after! So light and refreshing!

I am glad the seating worked out for you - I was a participant on that thread and that's why I was excited for your dining report. I think the only 'problem' seating for larger people is upstairs. As I mentioned on that thread, we sat on the same level we walked in on, sat at the outside - but our table mates could get around us easily.

YOU'RE BACK. I was wondering what happened to you! ;)

I have a feeling I will have the same opinion of Biergarten. I'm not into overly mayonnaise-y foods. I'm really sad to hear the cheese soup is cold (WHAT THE HECK!?) and sausage usually isn't my thing but it's worth a try. I hope my fiance loves it though. I may stick to mac and cheese, pretzel bread, and dessert. I love the apple strudel with vanilla sauce at food and wine so I'm thinking this is similar!?

The Picnic Burger - $12.99
"7 oz Angus Chuck patty, Grilled Hot Dog, Cheddar Cheese, Sauerkraut, Grilled Onions, Kosher Pickles, Ketchup, Mustard, Lettuce, and Vine-Ripe Tomato on a Brioche Roll"

I'd like to focus for a second on the this amazing burger.
Burger: Yum.
Hot dog: Double yum.
Cheddar cheese: Come to mommy!
Sauerkraut: Where have you been all my life?
Onions, pickles and all the rest: *faint*

This was the perfect way to start our stay at Pop and the World.

I had the Sci-Fi Diner version of this burger in 2014. I would say this burger causes Burger Ecstasy. We are staying at POP in June, so I'm looking forward to following your footsteps and heading straight to the Picnic Burger upon arrival.

I wish I loved alcohol! That could probably solve some of my problems in life ;)
I don't usually mind 'meh' food (because it's still food!) but I guess my expectations were too high. Next time I'm sure I'll enjoy myself more! :)
And thank you for your help on my original thread! I just re-read it and really appreciate everyone's advice! A lot of people mentioned it was tight fit but we really had no trouble at all...
Also, I need to keep reminding myself that XXL (or XXXXXXL) is a lot more common in the US and so places are a lot more accommodating! ::yes::

Hey!!! I love your new profile pic!!!
I was a little worried I'd ruin your upcoming visit to Biergarten with my review. Didn't want you to have a negative opinion before you even got there :sad2:
Still, I hope you guys enjoy yourself- even if it's just with the greatest mac and cheese in Germany :D (And pretzel rolls and strudel with vanilla sauce!!!!) Aren't you going in like a second??? :cloud9:

Hey, thanks for being here! :-)
Sci-Fi has this burger?????? :goodvibes Yum!
I think I'll stay at POP just for this "Burger Ecstasy" next time I'm there :cloud9: June is just around the corner- you lucky girl, you!

Awww, thank you!!!

No, you didn't ruin it! I kind of had the opinion that I probably wouldn't love it, but Justin might (meat and potatoes all day every day), but figured we'd go anyways and give it a try.

26 days wahoooo!

I'm here to play catch-up!!! :D

No, we didn't really spend our credits wisely and yes, I probably could have saved some if I hadn't insisted on the DDP but would I do it again? You bet! (We're talking the regular DDP, yes?)
I love knowing that it's already paid for and not thinking twice about getting the most expensive item on the menu. It just adds to the Disney magic for me and I have no regrets.
This pretty much sums up my feelings about the DDP, too! I love it! :lovestruc

(But who eats just because they're hungry? Not me!)
I eat just for the sake of eating. Because eating is AWESOME. Oh yeah, and because I'm NEVER not-hungry. I LOVE YOU, FOOD.

SAYYYYYYYYYY WHAAAAAAAAAAT!!!!!!!!!! That sounds amazeballs!!!

Well, as I mentioned earlier, Shira preferred not to mix dairy and meat and so I asked the cheese be put on the side. I got a few stares and it seemed like it was really complicated for them (really. They kept talking among themselves and coming back to ask me if I really wanted it on the side and switched from a bowl to a plate to just standing and staring at it), but they ended up putting the slice of cheese on a plate for me to enjoy.
"Maaaan, where does this lady think she is? This ain't no Burger King and special orders DO upset us!" - Every food court employee anywhere, since the beginning of time.

(Did I mention I was a carnivore?)
I think I was a T-Rex in a past life. You and I could totally eat together.

Now, I'd like to take a moment to say something important: When other DISers tell you, "Pre-order! It'll save you time! Just do it!" - make sure to listen to them.
BAHAHA! It's SO TRUE. I've only done BoG lunch once, but I did pre-order (thankfully), and lemme tell you... Maaaaaaaaaaan, did it ever feel AWESOME to walk my hungry butt right past that super-huge line of folks waiting for the ordering kiosks! :rotfl:

According to my notes, I DID NOT FINISH THE PORK. *gasp* :faint:
Blasphemer. :sad2: I would have finished it for you. Happily. (See? Toldya we'd be a good food team!)

Next time I'm getting me another one of these and also a strawberry cream cheese cupcake because it was pink and it looked unreal!
And you better believe I'm not sharing! :P
I have had them both, and I can attest that they are both DEEEEEELICIOUS. :cutie:

We don't really have tiny baby ducklings roaming around freely in Israel so as an animal lover, this really warmed my heart :lovestruc
ZOMG!!!! BABY DUCK!!!! That is just too sweet!!! :lovestruc

Vanilla I can do! So I hereby pledge that "next time" I will give the Dole Whip another try. As a pineapple-vanilla swirl. And hopefully it will be as dreamy as all of you seem to think it is :cloud9:
Yes, ma'am! I love me some pineapple, but I can only do a Dole Whip is it's swirled... The sweet creaminess of the vanilla does wonders to cut down the tartness of the pineapple!

Chicken Parmesan - $8.79
"Over Cavatappi Pasta with Marinara or Alfredo Sauce served with Green Beans and Garlic Bread"
WOW, that looks great!!! Especially the pasta! YUM!!!

Shira was braver than me and did try the Beverly. Ahem. She spit it out into the trashcan. :crazy2:
BAHAHAHA! I love when people try the Beverly. It never fails to crack me up. :rotfl:

Hello beautiful artsy French food!
Good gawd, look at ALL THOSE WONDERFUL CARBS. *drool* I'm telling you, when I make it back to Disney in October, this diet of mine is TOAST for that week! I don't even care if I gain back 20 lbs, I'll lose it again when I get home. At Disney, I need to eat ALL the things!!!

Everything else was again kind of meh, I'm so so sorry to say.
The main reason I chose Biergarten beside it being a buffet (unlimited choices!) is because I love all types of hot dogs and I thought the sausages would be.. you know... similar? Just plain good?

Bite 3- "Noooo!!! It can't be!! It has to be good!!! How will I go on??"
*Two courses later*
Bite 4- "Nope, still not good." *sigh*
FINALLY!!!!! Somebody who felt the same about Biergarten that I did! I didn't HATE it, and it was all obviously good quality stuff... but I felt like everything I tried just didn't have a flavor pallet that worked for me. I'd be all "Oh yeah, this looks awesome, I can't wait to put this in my mouth!" And then I did. And was unimpressed. I mean, I would go back if I was going with somebody who just really really wanted to go, and I could make it work, but I wouldn't be super excited about it or anything.

Awww, thank you!!!

No, you didn't ruin it! I kind of had the opinion that I probably wouldn't love it, but Justin might (meat and potatoes all day every day), but figured we'd go anyways and give it a try.

So glad I didn't ruin it :)
And you're almost on your way!!!!!!! :cheer2:

I'm here to play catch-up!!! :D
Hurray!!!! I'm so glad you're here and all caught up!!!! Next review coming up very soon!!!

Aaaaaaaand we're back with another episode of DeeDee and Shira Eat the World!!!!
Today- Nine Dragons!!!!

The day is still Thursday. The sun is setting. We've had brunch at Frenchy place and Lunch in Germany. We've walked through most of the World Showcase.
Shira's lack of sleep is catching up and her legs are insisting something is VERY wrong here. I can't fathom leaving the park so early and so we find ourselves sitting down constantly in between steps.
Shira is on the verge of collapsing. Literally.
Even though she is half fainted from exhaustion, she somehow manages to take this fantastic picture of the WS Lagoon:
(Oooooh....... Aaaaah.......)

Epcot (39).jpg

(Enough suspense. Back to normal dining review mode.)

We didn't have any plans for dinner but it was still early and we had just eaten a few hours ago. Epcot is THE place for QS meals and I assumed we'd choose one off our very long list of places to try.
But you gotta believe me when I say Shira was not going anywhere. I was actually imagining seeking out first aid and wondering if we'd have to use our traveler's insurance for the first time... :sad2:
And I was quickly feeling exhausted myself. This was not good.

Somehow through the haze we found ourselves in China for the second or third time that day. After making sure we didn't need a reservation, we decided, to hell with it! and stumbled into Nine Dragons. Our second TS meal of the day.

We needed to sit. We needed to be served. We needed tall glasses of ice water and hot food.
We needed..... Basically we needed a table service restaurant. :teeth:

The restaurant wasn't full at all and I'm so glad we decided to go for it!
It's beautiful inside. Well lit with such friendly service! Oh, and check out the bathroom! Gorgeous!

Let's get right to it.

As you all know, a TS credit allows you one entree, one drink and one dessert. But my brain was getting foggy and our appetite returned full force (we didn't really eat that much at Biergarten, come to think of it) so we went for appetizers as well.

Shira went for the pot stickers. Except... Umm....

9 Nine Dragons (2).jpg

Pot Stickers - $6.98
"Pan-fried Chicken and Vegetable dumplings served with Soy Dipping Sauce"

Well, let's just say they were delicious! There were 4 of them. Key word being 'were'.
(We do get better with the pictures! I'm sorry!!! We were dazed! We felt drugged! Shira was on the verge of tears all evening!!! :scared: )

I went with the soup. Oh so yummy! It really hit the spot for me.

9 Nine Dragons (3).jpg

Soup - $3.98

Ok, I'm not entirely sure what type of soup I ate. On their current menu there's a hot and sour chicken soup. But I think what I had was called 'chicken dumpling consomme' or something like that. (At least that's what I wrote in my tiny pad..) I Googled it and it seems they did have something like that on their menu. Possibly with pork dumplings but I'm not sure that's what this was.
Either way it was delicious, just a little bit spicy and just what I needed. And there were two dumplings, by the way :-)

These were our drinks:

9 Nine Dragons (4).jpg

Oh how I'd love a glass of ice cold coke right now :guilty:

For our entrees, Shira took the honey chicken and I took the steak and shrimp combo:

9 Nine Dragons (5).jpg

Honey Sesame Chicken - $18.98
"Chef Wei's Specialty served with Asparagus"

Shira chose a side of steamed white rice. The chicken was a bit too sweet for her but she finished it all. She would have preferred sweet and sour chicken but that wasn't on the menu. Still, at one point I could have sworn I heard the waiter mention sweet and sour chicken to another guest! I guess we could have asked but I'm not good at things like that. Whatever's on the menu is on the menu.

This is my yummy steak!

9 Nine Dragons (6).jpg

Sirloin Steak and Shrimps - $26.98
"Grilled Sirloin and Shrimps served with Bok Choy"

My steak was medium rare and made to perfection. It was also pretty big even though it was sliced so it seemed smaller than it was.
The shrimp was great although not entirely necessary (ha ha- food is always necessary). The sauce they put all over the steak was a bit overwhelming and it seemed a shame to waste the natural flavor of the steak. But it was all good :cloud9:
I got my entree with a side of fried rice which was kind of meh to me but Shira liked it. And this was my first bok choy experience! I'm still not sure what it is exactly but I liked it! (And I don't say that about just any veggie!)
All in all, good experience. I'd probably try something else next time but I have no regrets!

For dessert we split the banana cheesecake eggrolls which serve two and are no longer on the Nine Dragons menu (gasp!)

9 Nine Dragons (1).jpg

Banana Cheesecake Eggrolls - $10.98

"Drizzled with caramel sauce and served with your choice of ice cream"

Ok. Where to start?
First of all, Shira LOVED this! It grew on me but that took time. And even then it didn't manage to grow all the way o_O
Shira loved it so much she really hoped I'd hate it so she could eat it all... I did end up leaving her most of it even though by that point I kind of wanted it myself! (Maybe it was drugged?)
The texture took me a while to get used to. It was pretty strange at first. And I really couldn't taste the cheesecake part.
But it was definitely unique and I'd probably recommend it to other people because it's different. Not just another standard dessert.
(The ice cream was just meh, BTW.)
I wonder why this is no longer on their menu :confused3

And now, the surprise of the evening- since Shira was wearing her birthday pin....

9 Nine Dragons (7).jpg

Chinese Ginger Cake - $6.68

We got another dessert! For free! On the house! :thumbsup2
This was a really interesting cake! I was hesitant at first because to me ginger does not belong in anything like cake. Nope. No way.
Stir fry- sure. Sushi- definitely. Cake?? Nope.
But.... it was surprisingly good! It was light, with a nice cream in the center (can't really see that in the picture) and there was only a slight ginger taste.
I probably wouldn't order this myself, but as a freebie it was great! And such a lovely gesture :goodvibes
Oh, I've heard of that pixie dust when people have celebration buttons on, but experiencing it first hand.. that's different.

Which is why, no matter how high prices are raised, I'll probably always go back to my happy place. (If you're reading this, Disney execs., that doesn't mean you have to keep raising prices on us!!!!)

Thanks for joining folks!
Next up- it's a rainy Friday at Animal Kingdom and Flame Tree BBQ!!!!

Ok, ok, ok- it's late and I really need to get some sleep but just one more tiny post which is only just kinda dining review material.. (Ok, maybe it's not)

These are also from our Epcot day- The Moroccan Pavilion of course:

8 Epcot (1).jpg

Turkish Delight- Made by Galil, Israel.

8 Epcot (2).jpg

Aaaaand Elite Black Coffee (also called Turkish coffee) which my ex husband used to drink and my boyfriend drinks and basically all the manly men of Israel drink :D (Or should I say 8-) )
I love the smell but I'd never drink it. (Just keep it in my freezer for my BF  )
Israel is tiny and whenever we travel the world and see stuff that's made in Israel, we can't help but get excited. I'm sure people who live in other, far away countries feel that way too :)

And one last picture, because this is my absolute favorite moment of this trip and even though it's now my profile picture, it deserves full size recognition :-)

EPCOT_CHRCON2_7584587580.jpeg

Goofy hugged me for a really long time! Like a few seconds! (Which is a really long time compared to other characters!)
I hugged him for a second and was about to pull away but he held on and hugged me really tight. This is not normal- everyone else kind of just hugged.. y'know.. cause they had to.. and then posed for the pictures...
But Goofy hung on to me and I really felt the most amazing few seconds of absolute joy, returning to a carefree childhood where everything else disappears...

Maybe he just liked my cleavage (sorry- is that allowed on the DIS? ) but I like to think it was pure pixie dust and he really felt I needed that hug.
Pure, absolute magic.

Fun Fact: I ate at Nine Dragons in 1986, a year after it opened. It was my second trip to WDW, I was 15 and traveling with my best friend and her family.

That banana cheesecake eggroll looks amazing. Hot bananas are one of my favorite things. Bananas Foster, Fried Banana - bring it to me! I would also happily take that ginger cake because I will eat ginger in everything.

Good to know that Morocco has Turkish Delight, in case I get a craving. There is a place here in Seattle that makes it fresh, but they are hardly ever open. Still, if I catch them at the right time - lime Turkish delight is my favorite, second to Rose.

I think I said this before, but I do love that picture of you and Goofy. It is joy personified.

Wow, that IS a fun fact! :D Do you remember what it was like?

Then you would have loved this! Both the eggroll and the ginger cake! And by the way, when looking up the eggroll (since it's not on the menu) I found a review comparing it to the fried wontons at Yak and Yeti. I read so much about them and thought I'd try them next time but if they're really similar to the eggrolls I might end up skipping them :)

Ok, I have a confession to make. I've never had Turkish Delight. Ever. I'm not even sure I know what it is!

I think I said this before, but I do love that picture of you and Goofy. It is joy personified.
Thank you :lovestruc I love it too!

That pic with Goofy is so sweet! I had a great interaction with goofy when I was there two years ago. I was wearing my hair in braided pigtails and Goofy grabbed me out of line for a pic with each of us holding out our "ears"!

Sounds like you and your sister had a rough evening! Maybe it was finally the jetlag catching up with you? Glad you were able to find a table and get some good food to get you back on your feet.

Turkish Delight is a gummy candy similar to a gum drop, but covered in powdered sugar instead of granulated. Sometimes there are nuts in it. Cadbury also makes a Turkish Delight-filled chocolate bar.

The bones of Nine Dragons (the walls and much of the decor) are familiar to me from that trip. The furniture is totally different. I remember it being more ornate. I also remember we were literally the only people in there.

I could do a carnivore trip too..that would be awesome..thanks so much for the great photos and reviews...

YEP.. I wonder if Disney sees this as an issue!? They've gotta be losing money on this.. I know we always get on drink and split it and get another water.

It was always my understanding that Disney does not have to pay for their soda (The advertising alone is worth it to the soda company) so I do not think it is an issue....And like having unlimited Mickey bars for that $150.00 late night "event" thing: how much soda/ice cream can people put in their pockets?
