Single trip travel insurance

We have an annual policy which covers us and our two teenage daughters. It costs us a little over £80 a year as we get two discounts - 20% for arranging our household insurance with the same insurer, and a 20% staff discount.

Next July we are also taking elder dd's boyfriend. The cost of single trip insurance through the same insurer is £48.99 for 14 days Anyone know where we can get it cheaper?

Deb - do a search on the travel insurance section on www.thisismoney.com.

For any type of insurance/mortgage/credit card financial product you can look up this site and they will ask a few questions (online) and then give you a list of providers based on either cost or type of product definition (ie on travel insurance, single, family, worldwide etc).

I found this site recently :

They are quoting £27.90 for a single trip individual policy to the USA for up to 17 days travel. Click the short trip link towards the top left for the basic policy prices. You'll also find a link on this price page for details of the actual cover. Aside from a lower emergncy medical cover payout than you might find elsewhere, the cover seems pretty competitive.

We are intending to use them for our family policy for our coming trip, again 17 days cover for just £55.90, at least £15-20 cheaper than I've seen elsewhere so far.

Ok, I just found an even better quote, for both family and for an individual policy - assuming the boyfriend is over 18.

They gave me a quote of £37.70 for 18 days full cover for a family of four for a trip to the USA, just £17.95 for an individual for the same period - perhaps the few days less you are going will bring that down even further !

Those are amazing quotes ! The cover also seems top rank, the usual £10 millon medical expenses, £2 million liability etc. The only proviso is that you have to agree to their medical terms - ie, that existing conditions - I am a diabetic - or problems treated in the last 12 months are not covered. However, I dont see that as a problem, I'm largely concerned about medical cover in the event of an accident or other illness, etc.

Once I get a clarification that, as should be the case, I'd be covered for any other illness unrelated to my diabetes or an accident, I think I'll be changing who I insure with !!

If something seems too good to be true, it usually is!

I don't know anything about this company but the quotes mentioned above grabbed my attention and so I decided to take a look for myself.

Firstly, when I tried to download their 'policy wording' document, I got nothing back, and secondly, there are no phone numbers on their contacts page, the only way to communicate with them is via an email address.

How would you like to be stuck in an american hospital with a huge medical bill and find that no one is returning your emails?

The only way to test if an insurance company is value for money is when you have to make a claim, and on the evidence of their website I would not have too much faith in this company being around to honour any claims, particularly large ones!

I am in the market for travel insurance but will not be risking the health and well-being of my family with this comapny just to save a few pounds. Buyer Beware !

Just had a look at travel insurance web, did anybody notice the maximum age they will insure upto is only 49yrs, bit young!!! Why not try Norwich union maybe a bit dearer but a pretty secure company if you need to claim, I use them £72 annual worldwide for a couple, and I feel secure in the knowledge they cover us.
