Single Parents?

I am a single parent with a 4 year old. This past March we stayed at SSR and had a great time. However, it would have been a lot more fun for my son if he had playmates at the pool. I noticed that many of the kids at the pool during our visit were involved with their own groups, so I felt a little bad for him. (I don't think he was any worse for wear, but it bothered ME.)

I was wondering.....are there any single parent gatherings within the DVC owner community, whether it be at a DVC resort or a Disney cruise?

Thanks!

Hey, I see that you stayed at the classic Dixie Landings! I refuse to call it that other name!

I don't subscribe to the SSR lover's thread, but on the VWL lover's thread, we keep a list of who is coming to VWL and many have planned meets because of our thread. If SSR thread doesn't do that, volunteer for the duty (keeping track of those who wish to participate) and make you wishes known on that thread. If you ever book at VWL, come on over and visit our thread. We'll hook you up :thumbsup2.

Not a single parent, but have one DS and one DD...one sociable, one not....we have found that they can sometimes find playmates at the Community Hall. Our daughter would start out by signing up for some sort of activity and branch out from there. It isn't easy because each family has their schedule but she always enjoyed the Community Hall's.

The suggestion to connect on the DIS boards before heading out is good, expecially if you are travelling on a traditional school holiday time. The DVC resorts seem to be quieter as far as kids grouping up. (I remember staying at Pop Century and hardly seeing the pool water for the amount of kids heads bobbing up and down!)

I am actually an owner at AKL and will be there in March 2010. As our vacation approaches, I am going to check the DIS boards for anyone traveling there at the same time.

We are going to have at least two days without going to the parks, so I'd like to get him involved in the resort activities at the time.

Thanks!

Yes, it definitely works to use these boards to find a friend! We travelled with a 9 year old DCuz and found a fellow Disboard, Kathleena who was travelling to the same resort, BWV, with her DGD. What a fun time the girls and we had together!

There is a AKV Groupie thread. You would be surprised how much fun these groups are. Some of my favorite people here on the DIS are those who I have met on our thread. Join in the fun!:yay:

When our kids were younger we tried to stop in at Community Hall with them at some point during the day to either spend some time or to participate in an organized activity CMs had planned. This can be a good ice-breaker for kids to spend time with other kids staying at the resort and make them more inclined to approach each other when at pool. Also, AKL has Simba's Clubhouse (iirc, think that's what it is called) for evening childcare & usually depending upon time you drop child off they serve the kids dinner too - I would recommend reserving during the dinner time & earlier in the evening usually will have more younger kids in attendance too - - this too is a nice way for kids to participate in activities with other kids too and will give you the chance for some 'me time'. It costs around $20 per hour ( will try to find you link with more details ) but could be well worth giving a try.

Best wishes :goodvibes

Thank you for all of the great information! I am definitely going to hunt down that AKV Groupie thread!

Wish it weren't 8 months until we travel....:sad2:
