single parent families

I thought maybe we should find out if we can get a special board for Single Parents. There is one for adults, families and solos, so why not one for the single parent families!? Then we could have a thread for single parent tips and maybe one for posting our dates and resorts for anyone who wants to meet up. I was going to start a couple of threads for the above, but thought since the OP actually got around to starting this thread that they shoudl have the option of the honour first

thanks 2 tiggies, i have sent a pm to the mods about getting our own board ;)

it feels great to know that there are alot of us here in disworld ,and now that we have found each other  , it makes great sense to have our own boards to post topics to single parent families.

thought i would post some pics from last night, the kids had candy for breakfast, i told them to enjoy it because this was the only morning i would allow it

Wow I didn't realize how many single parent WDW loving families were out there. I am the proud single mom of a dd (18) and ds (5). I am trying to plan a trip for me and ds in 2010. I have went with both kids several times and took dd when she was younger. I thought it would be nice to have a mom son trip.

What cute costumes pirate: My ds decided last year that he was done with cute costumes and went as Jason again this year  I won't see him until at least noon, I let him sleep in on weekends if we don't have to go anywhere, but I'm sure he too will want candy shortly after getting up.

Has anyone see the Michael Jackson movie yet? We're going tonight popcorn:: and I was just wondering how it was.

I haven't decided yet. We have never been before, but I drive 8-9 hours all the time to see my family. I am just not sure I want to drive for 2 days alone with three kids in places I am not familiar with. If I can get tickets for about 800 total, then we might just fly. It would cost almost that much with at least 2 hotel rooms, gas, and food for 2 days there and 2 days back. Plus if I spend 4 days driving that is 4 less days of vacation I have.
I live in SW Michigan as well and drove down the last 2 time. I drive over on the Toll road through Indiana into Ohio and take I 75 down. It is a nice trip and not bad through the mountains. We stop for one night on the way there and back. Next time I want to stop for 2 nights on the way back. It seems like a much longer ride back.

Glad I found this thread! Single mom with DS10 and DS3. We live fairly close, so we go often. And since we are DVC members we often stay for a few days at a time, (even though we could drive home in under an hour!! :)) So since we spend so much time at WDW, meeting up with other single parents is that much more desirable. Was just there for MNSSHP last weekend with my boys and we had a blast... however some adult conversation would be welcome, while waiting in lines for rides, and especially during TS meals... I am often surprised at the strange looks I get when my boys and I are seated.... just the 3 of us.
We are going back in a couple weeks (11/13 - 11/15), and again for MVMCP (on Dec 11). We are also setting sail on our first Disney Cruise in late Jan, but I am bringing my mom along on that one... not sure I am ready for a cruise alone.... at least not the first time.
Would definitely love to see this thread help us plan meets, etc...

My 10 yr old DD and I arrive on the 14th and plan on spending that night just hanging out and then going to AK on the 15th.

The way back is what I am most worried about. We will all be tired and ready to be home I am sure. Anytime we travel the way there is okay, but the way home is less than desirable! How many driving hours does it take you to get down there?

We usually leave in the morning around 7:00am and drive into Georgia. We stop near Atlanta and it is usually near 11:00pm. On the way we stop for meals and bathroom breaks. The next day we try and leave by 6:00am and I stop for breakfast and lunch and get to my resort by 3:00pm. The first trip I did all the driving and stopped when ever needed. The last trip my mom did a lot of the driving on the way there.

We usually don't leave WDW until afternoon and drive to Atlanta for the night. The next day we drive all the way back and this is a hard drive. Next time I will be stopping for a second night.

Did you get a reply, Stitchaholic? I am really looking forward to our own little spot! Thanks for that.

i emailed the mods,do you have another idea?

chat is back up and running, do we want to plan a meet in the chat room? maybe friday night at 9pm ?

I'm shooting for my first ever real vacation as a single parent a year from now. My kids will be 10, 8, 7, and 4. I'm not sure how or if I'm going to be able to handle it alone.

My sis and her family will drive down with us (or meet us there). I can handle the drive down alone with my kids, it's the time in the parks, the rides.....that's the part I worry about seeing as how my youngest is going to be too young to go on some things, and the older ones might need company on some of the rides.

My sis says if I ask my parents to come, they probably will. I just don't want to "use" them like that, as basically babysitting help. And as for my sister and her family -- different touring plan with only a day or two overlap. So, I guess we'll see as the time draws closer how comfortable I am doing this alone. It all may be moot anyway if I can't wrangle enough funds.

I'm a single mom. I was with my ex for 15 years. Divorced a little over 2 years. DD is 12. My biggest obstacle was learning to travel by myself. He always did the driving and the schlepping of the luggage. I met him when I was 26 so was very self sufficient, but the 15 years made a big difference. However I can happily say dd and I have learned to navigate Disney property well even if the GPS doesn't want to work on property:lmao:

Since my divorce I have been to NYC (dd's 11th bday at NY palace recommended by someone on this board--great board), Barbados to visit sister, Aruba, Dominican Republic, Universal twice, Disney (shhhhhh oh about 6 times), NC (driving), numerous competitions (my dd did All Star cheer, now does trampoline/tumbling) all over Florida, Vegas, Georgia, etc. And along with all those miles I racked up some self confidence that let me know I'm not as stupid as he made me believe. I CAN DO ANYTHING. Ok well almost.

So we did Universal/Disney in Sept. Off for another 2 days at Disney/2 at Universal at the end of the month to celebrate my bday. Then a week and a half after that we are going back for 3 nights Disney/1 night Universal. What a blast we have!!:cool1:

I think we will have to give them some time. I am sure they will respond, but if they decide to give us a board, it will take some time and arranging. Let's keep this thread going in the meantime.

I would love to chat but I live in Scotland. We have a time difference of 5 hours making 9 pm making it 2 am :sad1: :sad2:. I hate being left out ;)

Time differences are horrible. (And for some of us, it means looking at the World Clock every time we go to make a phone call.) :)

maybe on sat or sun we can meet up in there at 10am our time,so it would be 3 in the afternoon your time?

well this thread certainly quieted down, I know we are all busy being single parents and all ,:)
Hope everyone is having fun planning for their upcoming trips, I just started my PTR today, I am hoping that it will keep me busy and out of trouble,I have been changing up my ADR's too frequently after reading dinning reviews

I will keep looking. I am willing to fly out of South Bend, Indianapolis, or Chicago. None of them too far, South Bend is really close, and I have people I could crash with in Indianapolis or Chicago so it wouldn't be too bad.

I am also a single mom by choice. I have a DS 7. We go to WDW 2 times a year a love it! I also would go nuts on a beach vacation with my son for a week! There is so much to do at WDW we just love it!

Just a FYI there are great fares out of Chicago right now to MCO. Out of ORD airfares are about $189 to $223 from ORD(oHare) to MCO. Check out american, united and us airways. Sometimes Southwest has great fares out of Midway. If you come to Chicago and fly out of OHare let me know I woudl be happy to help in anyway I can!

I would love to do a Disney cruise the bummer is the prices are quoted based upon 2 adults. I would love to see if we had a group if they would offer us single parent rates! Meaning one adult prices!

that would definitly be something to look into, a group single parent cruise would be alot of fun!
