Single Mom Camping w/4yr old

Can anyone tell me if they would feel safe camping at FW alone with a child? I want to take my son tent camping, but I am not sure if it is safe for a woman and child alone. I would think that if anywhere on this earth was safe to camp, it would be DisneyWorld, but just not sure.

Any feedback on this would be great!

YES if anywhere is safe it's there.! I've never felt threatened in my solo jaunts there!!

I cannot say anything as to being their alone with a child but I do feel that you will be safe! I always felt safe at the fort when I was alone with my kids while hubby was away doing his own thing! To be honest the only thing I was scared of was the armidillos <-----(sp) rustling in the bushes at night on my way to do laundry!!

Hi Is2175, Although not alone, I never felt uncomfortable at the Fort. My DH and I have 5 young children and a few nights I ended up walking 1 or 2 to CS after 12am while DH stayed behind with the others, and we were 6-7 sites from the CS. One way to avoid this would be to bring your potty training chair with you for him to use. We had our too but the power of suggestion was enough for me too. I have been places that we have only driven around and said no way, got the heebie jeebies just looking for a site. FW would be fine IMO. Have a plan and have a great time!

I would feel safe staying there by myself, I would probably ask for loop 1500 instead of 2000 since it is a little less secluded as far as tent sites go. Mrs. Goofy

I have been to FW several times alone with my grandson. Always felt safe and met wonderful people who helped me with whatever I needed, including tent set up.

Nothing is 100%, but FW is as close as you will ever get as far as security and safety goes.

I don't want to offend, but think about it probably 95% of the people camping at FW are either adults or families and with the restricted access and high cost it is not somewhere that a individual with less than well intended intentions is likely to be trying to pray on certain people.

As an extra measure you could always introduce yourself to those on each side of you and explain your situation (single with a child) and I know if I knew that I would be extra vigilant of that site and what might be going on. If I saw something that was not right I would sure either check it out or notify Disney Security.

I understand your concerns, but don't let them influence your decision to enjoy that quality time with your son.

I tent camped alone with my 5yr old son this past may and it was a wonderful experience. My only suggestion would be to ask for help when you need it! I spent a hot and worrisome 2 hours trying to get our tent site up and running. I could have saved myself soo many blisters, sore muscles, and aggrevation had I just asked a "neighbor" for assistance. It wasn't so much the tent as it was moving the picnic table ( man, those things are heavy!) and putting up the screened - in area ( when the directions say it needs 2 people, they are not joking!)
I never once was worried about our safety- in fact I felt a greater need to be on the lookout when we stayed at the all star music in Oct.( could have been all those teenagers running about tho...)

I found most ppl going to DW are kind, generous,thoughtful travelers. I would feel just as comfortable camping as I would staying at a value, moderate , or deluxe resort. Just be aware of your surrounding as you would do at home. Being on a vacation does not mean to let your guard down. Have a wonderful time -- go to the movie, roast marshmellows, do the sing-a-long you will have a wonderful time. ( You can bring your own chocolate, graham crackers, and marshmellows or buy some at camp ground). Our daughter would rather miss the parks then miss the campfire each night. I had booked 4 nights ha ha ha --- ended up booking 4 more but 10 would have been just about right.

Fort wilderness is defentially a different kind of traveler. Most people plan on staying maybe 4 nights to 2 weeks. Every one is considerate of whats going on, and you don't really have the crazy teenagers running around loose (like the cheerleading groups they keep at All Stars). Me and my girlfriend have been tent camping for the past 4 years. Never once have I ever felt scared there. Only when it starts pouring and I'm hoping that it doesn't leak in.
You should have a great time there, and with so many kid friendly activities going on you would only have to buy a couple days at the park and spend your time there with your son. My favorite loop if 1500, it's right across from the meadows and the bus stop is right there. The 2000 loop is a little more secluded and quiet at night, but since it's on the purple route it makes it a bit harder to get to things.

I camp all the time with just my 2 kids, Dad stays home/work. Other people worry more about me than I do. I don't have a cell phone and must do like the good ol' days of relying on the generosity of others. You remember it's called "community." My daughter (5) and I pitched 2 tents together while at FW. I'll be back in Aug. with just both kids (Dad's had enough of Dumbo apparently ). Try camping a time or two around your home or even your backyard (but then you won't have the joy of a bath house) so you'll know what obstacles will be waiting for you. I've had to ask for car jumps from neighbors and had to stop a guy on a walk to help me open something (honestly, men love feeling needed and/or rescueing so don't hesitate to ask them). I've also set up camp next to other mother's with their children, you'll likely find you're not the only one in that situation.
