I'm booking a cruise for my family (husband, me, 2 teens 14 and 18) and my mother-in-law is coming along (help!) The 4 of us will be in one cabin and we would like to get her a connecting cabin next to us. The problem is the pricing for 1 person in the cabin is the same as it would be for 2 people in the cabin which freaked me out. So for planning/pricing, I put 3 of us (me, husband, 14-year-old) in one cabin (family w/verandah so it will sleep 4) and I put our 18-year-old in the cabin with grandma. It saves a TON of money so this is definitely the best option. However, my 18-year-old will not be staying in grandmas cabin. So how does that work? If I book her in with grandma to save money even though she will be in our cabin, she will get stuck with a key to grandmas cabin and won't have one to ours. Will they change that for us on the ship? Can we do this? Thanks!

Your older child (actually an adult) can get a blank key to your room. It won't have charging privileges, but will open the room door. The room host tip will be charged to the room that your daughter is registered in, not your room.

Be sure that you book a room for the 3 of you that actually sleeps 4.

And the 18 year old will have to attend the muster drill for the room she's registered in.

Note that if you book connecting cabins, she'll be able to access your room via Grandma's anyway. But yes, DCL is very used to this, just get an extra keycard to your stateroom from Guest Services. Be aware any charges she makes will go to Grandma's room unless you set-up a separate credit card (yours) for her onboard account. Tell the stateroom host she'll be sleeping in your room so the beds will be set correctly.

We did that on our last cruise: Officially had my mother in law and wife in one room and me and the 2 kids in the other; then we just got my wife a key for our room. Extra bonus was that my mother in law (first time cruiser) then got a Castaway Club gift and the ability to book activities in the same window as us.

I think this is a very common scenario. We had the same scenario on our last cruise and it was just a matter of getting an extra key.

As the others have posted, yes it is commonly done.

Have you considered letting her stay in grandma's room (if grandma is willing). That way, you don't have to pull down both beds in the room that has 3...and there may be more space to roam around the room.

How does this kind of thing work for charging drinks and stuff? We have two on-board booking discounts available and we're thinking about using them both on one cruise. My TA tells me that we'll have to put my name on one room and my wife's name on the other, then add the other two people one to each room. But... Is there a way that my wife and I can have our Key to the World cards charge my account and the other two people charge a different account? Or is it one account per room? And how does it work for unlocking doors, too?

It seems complicated.

When you do your online check in, you specify the method of payment for each person. But that only means you can put both yours and your wife's back up charge on the same credit card. Or each person can put their own credit card on each room key card.

I don't believe you can split the OBC, but you can use your KTTW card to charge things for your wife and it will come off your OBC first, before being charged to the credit card.
