Since when are Disney Princesses not appropriate for children?

I agree. AND I'm not sure I'll be visiting that blog anymore because those women are just plain... um :rolleyes1 Well, I'll keep my polite opinion to my polite self as I don't want to attack anyone else's view point like they did mine. Different Strokes for Different Folks I suppose. :littleangel:

But that is exactly what you did in the first post, calling them closed-minded, presumably because they have a different opinion than you.

Yeah, thanks for reminding me, lol. I'm trying to be a big girl now and rise above it.

Some of my more feminist-minded friends have issues with the princess movies/stories because of the whole "fall in love at first sight with the man who solves all your problems and live happily ever after" dynamic, but I've never heard any objections to them as too racy for kids to be exposed to. I know a few dads who have vetoed Jasmine Halloween costumes because of the bare midriff, but that's as far as it goes. :rotfl:

Ok, I want to say this about the Katy Perry thing.

I didn't like her outfit. I totally agree with everyone who thought it was inappropriate, and I agree with the decision to pull the skit due to the outfit. But saying she shouldn't be on Sesame Street because of her sexy image is kind of silly.

There are a lot of people who have guest starred on Sesame Street who have material out there that is risque and inappropriate for kids... some that I can think of off the top of my head are Beyonce, Jenny McCarthy who was naked in Playboy, Phoebe Cates (helllloooo Fast Times at Ridgemont High?!), Kim Cattrall who appears topless in Sex and the City, James Gandolfini and Edie Falco from the Sopranos, Ice-T who has a song called Cop Killer, and Richard Pryor-- we all know how dirty his brand of comedy was.

I think parents should just follow their own values and moral conduct codes and stop trying to "convert" others or beat them over the head with their own specific views..:sad2:

Guess she never heard of "To each their own"???

But it was her blog. She was expressing what "her own" was for her family. It just happened to be different from what the OP thinks is right.

My mistake.. I missed the part where it said "blog".. I was thinking more along the lines of a web site - set up to rope people in.. Guess I need another cup of coffee..;)

Thanks for the offer, but the only thing I have ever used in my coffee (besides sugar) is evaporated milk.. Blame my mother - she's the one that started that.. LOL..

I don't care what Katy Perry wears, but I hate her music and the message behind it.

I guess some people feel the same way about the princesses too.

No, you don't see Anakin killing all the younglings*, and DS (6) has seen (in whole or in part) all of the six Star Wars movies, plus the animated Clone Wars stuff. I won't inflict the Star Wars Holiday Special on him until he is older, but that's because I don't want to risk damaging his love of SW. :lmao:

LOL!! I found it on you tube and showed ds. He said "LAME!!"

I have kept Indy, Transformers, and the like from him. Not because of violence, but due to language. Sith might be gruesome, but I don't want to hear DS (or worse, DD, who is only 3) walking around the house, while playing Indiana Jones, and hear "You dirty rotten son of a b----". (He has time to learn those words - I can't keep him from swearing forever, but another year or two would be nice.)

It's funny how different parenting ideas can be! I have a pretty bad potty mouth, curb it 99.99% in front of my kids - but driving in the car is a whole different story :rolleyes1 so they've heard a lot, and know not to repeat it. (not proud of my language, but AM proud that my kids know it's wrong, charge me 25 cents, and don't repeat :) )

The kids have watched part of the LoTR stuff - the movies are pretty long, they haven't seen them all yet.

We've watched bits and pieces of it, but it's too long to really keep his attention. And, well to be honest, it's not a Star Wars flick (or the Mighty Ducks - his newest obsession... I guess it's better than the Whimpy Kid LOL!)

* I'm not sure why, but Anakin killing the younglings has really kept me from buying the "he repented, and turned back to good" at the end of Jedi. Blowing up Alderan? No problem. Slaughtering a bunch of 5- and 6-year olds in person? Big problem.

Agree 110%

AGREE AGREE AGREE AGREE!!!

And don't forget about Adrien Grenier :lovestruc

Jessica Alba, who was with cookie monster describing the word scrumptious. Coincidence? I think not.

Robert DeNiro :thumbsup2

And Neil Patrick Harris! Who is *GASP!!* gay!!! He cracks me up!! :rotfl:

And, the creme de la creme -- MEL GIBSON :scared1:

I don't care what Katy Perry wears, but I hate her music and the message behind it.

I wouldn't know Katy Perry if she walked up to me on the street and introduced herself. What's she all about? *must google*

For the record, I did say I didn't think Katy Perry appearing on Sesame Street was appropriate even if they wrapped her head to toe like a Mummy. Maybe I'm a hypocrite. I just don't see it as the same thing.
Honestly, I do think you are a bit of a hypocrite (and i am glad you recognize it:flower3:). If you really analyze the Disney movies the message is pretty icky (see below) but you can enjoy them on the simple and fun level that you want and know your DD will grow up unscarred. Why is the same not true for Perry's work (especially on Sesame Street where the message shown THERE should not be an issue anyway:confused3).

For what it is worth, I do not censor much and my kids did watch the Disney movies when they were little (they still do) but truly, if I stop to think about it most of the princess movies essentially celebrate TEENS (usually 16) marrying someone they hardly know because he looks good. Generally all the girl has to lure him is looking pretty and possibly being sweet/singing well (but often she never speaks before they fall in love). Frequently the girl leaves her entire past life and family behind to go off and marry this virtual stranger just because he looks good. It is really a pretty crummy way to see life if you want to analyze it like that.

I think when you went on their BLOG (not an open discussion site but a blog) and then commented that you thought their view was wrong that is exactly what you did. I think in such an instance you really shouldn't be surprised if their retaliation got pretty nasty. It does sound like a place you do not belong (nor would I) so it is probably a good decision to unsubscribe.

Katy Perry calls herself a "champion of gay rights" and a "feminist" but she cashes in on doing the exact opposite. She's not only sang "I Kissed A Girl" which perpetuates the idea of lesbians existing for a heterosexual man's pleasure. Then she wrote the fantastic experience into the possibilities and complexities of the human language, "Ur So Gay." No champion of gay rights would use "gay" as an insult. No feminist would perpetuate the hetero male standard. She isn't a feminist, she's a perpetrator of the misogynist patriarchy.

I hate Katy Perry's music and what it means.

Ok... so this is what the deal is.... And I won't say anymore... Promise:rolleyes1 I am new to blogging. Very new... I am also a practicing catholic. I found a catholic blog. I joined the blog because I figured it would be fun to "hang out" with like minded people. Just like here on the Disboards. Well... I guessed wrong. They have set bloggers on this board and everyone else responds. The post was about Katy Perry and blah blah blah. And the jist was... Is it appropriate for Katy Perry to be featured on Sesame Street whose target audience is preschoolers? What are we saying to our kids? What's your opinion? Ok...

By the time I read the blog, people had already posted their opinions. Some I thought were extreme but one started bashing.... well, look at the Disney Princess and all that cleavage, etc. So by the time I came around to give my opinion, I said I had absolutely no problem with the princesses and didn't see it as an issue. I went on to say that to me they were just portrayed as beautiful women and I saw nothing wrong with that, etc.. It had never even crossed my mind to question their modesty. I then went on to say that thing about Katy Perry and I agreed I didn't think it was appropriate if they wrapped her up like a mummy. (Because the show was for preschoolers) I also said, Sesame Street had a long history of questionable guests and I thought they did it for the parents who were watching along with the kids because the kids wouldn't know them from a hole in the head.

You would have thought I was the devil himself. I suppose I took it personally as I like the princesses and really don't see anything wrong with them, or immodest or immoral. And then one started knocking public schools, and so on and so on... As a practicing catholic I had never heard such opinions from other catholics. Ever, anywhere, lol. I guess that's another reason I was thrown for a loop. They even went so far as to say what adults would want to look at them, etc.

So, the moral of the story is, for me.... Don't ever ever, ever talk about (I can hear my Mother now) Politics or Religion with strangers. Even if you think you share the same points of view.

Oh, and I like Katy Perry by the way, and have several of her songs loaded to the ipod, lol. I like her music, the sound. I personally don't subscribe to the message, but the sound is upbeat and her lyrics aren't going to persuade me to think different and lead me to the devil either, lol.

So that's that. I came here to the Disboards to rant to other like minded individuals who I thought could sympathize with my disgust over at the other place of apparantly not like minded individuals. Did you get that?

Anyway, my rant is over and I feel better now. :hippie:

I finally got around to watching the referrenced video and reading through what was posted on the blog that I believe that the OP was referring to. Here's my thoughts:
  • Katy Perry is cute.
  • Her outfit wasn't the least bit revealing.
  • The video was amusing and completely appropriate for Sesame Street.
  • Given that hundreds of other celebs have been on SS and that many of them also star in songs/movies/TV shows that are not generally thought as appropriate for young children, I find it somewhat hypocritical to be offended by Katy Perry.
  • Disney princesses are fine and we certainly are not making any attempt to shield our children from them. That being said, some of the princesses decisions have been questionable. Come to think of it, some of my decisions have been questionable and I'm not shielding my kids from me, either.

Have any of you who are trashing the Katy Perry video actually watched it? It is adorable! I thought it was very well done and so cute the way they changed the words and how she camped it up just enough to fit into Sesame Street.

It was very well done and quite appropriate and very very cute, it is too bad that Sesame caved to the narrow minded people who unfortunately are the most vocal and scream the most. you know what the say about the squeaky wheel, well it is true.

Agreed.

If people want to argue about her being on Sesame Street to begin with, that's one thing. However, the "skit" was nothing bad. You couldn't see anything (as she was wearing a flesh cover over the top of her chest and the redone song was kinda cute.

As with most people like her....she got judged because some people don't like her just b/c of who she is / what she sings. If the skit was done by an unknown, it never would have a been an issue. Many people were ready to scream that she was "not fit for my kids" before (or without) ever seeing the video.
