I am looking in Amazon for a SIM card as I hear this is the cheapest way to get data on your phone if travelling from Canada. Is there a specific one you’d recommend? Is an actual card better or should I try an eSIM card? I welcome all info!

While I'm not from Canada, I recently visited the US from the UK and used an eSIM - I'd highly recommend. It was so easy to load and use and to me seems better than messing around with a normal SIM card. I'm certainly getting an eSIM every time I travel from now on!

I got a 15GB eSIM for just under $12 that was valid for a month. You can get ones much cheaper than that depending on how much data you need and how long you need it to be valid for. Used this site https://mobimatter.com/

However I can't comment on actual SIM cards for travelling abroad as I've never used them.

Have you checked with your current carrier in Canada to see if they offer a plan for traveling to the US? That would be my first step.

If they do not have a plan, then buying a SIM/e-SIM would be the next option. It will depend on which format your phone needs. Some phones are physical SIM only, some allow one physical and at least one e-SIM, and some are e-SIM only. E-SIM is nice because in most cases you can have both your current carrier and the e-SIM for travel active in your phone so you can switch back and forth easily. Physical SIM cards are simple to use, but unless you have dual card trays in your phone, you will have to carry one of them separately where it could get damaged or lost.

I used the Airalo app before, if you have a newer phone you can download the e-sim easily.

This trip I’m on right now in Australia I decided to go data only and we’re using What’s App to call/text. I got a great deal through GigSky through my credit card.

Call your carrier, not sure of Bell, Telus etc. You maybe able to add a plan for the month. Which will cover you for the time being down in Orlando. The $15 a day is expensive over a week, which there maybe a better plan for the month.

We have always used amazon sim cards,,usually the tmobile or sim2roam which works off tmobile....it arrives before we leave,,book it to start working day of travel,,,no issues,,unlimited data, talk, text. Used them for over 10 years now,,they have different lengths of time.

Thanks for. Being so specific. I will search those up right away!

In general you are better off buying an eSim than adding the daily fee for your carrier.

I've been using an EU sim for many years when I travel and for 20 euro I can get a month of data - I pay 5 euros every three months to keep the same number active and then when I travel I can use that built up pay as you go credit towards the data plan for a month.

One problem to be aware of is if your phone is locked to your carrier you cant just add an eSim or a sim card unless they unlock it.

This is unfortunately very common in the US - I cant say if it is in Canada - I was going to take advantage of a new phone and a new service offer - but I cant use my eSim with it for data outside the US and they want $10 a day for a very small amount of data.
Local calls and text are free when traveling - which is nice - but data is far more important and they are really taking advantage.

If I want to pay for the phone in full then they will unlock it - but otherwise no.

For those in the US who might be traveling outside the US GoogleFi is still the best option IMO - they have pay as you go for data as well as an unlimited plan that includes outside the US. They also don't lock their phones so you can always add an eSim.

One last thing to be aware of - if you don't have a local eSim\number then people have to call your full number - so country code etc... and that may not be convenient at all.

(sorry this is not Canada specific info - but maybe it helps)
